Chapter 3 - What Was Hidden in the Wedding Dress

Rebecca opened the door only halfway.

A woman stood in the corridor wearing a dark housekeeping coat over street clothes.

Rebecca recognized her immediately.

The hotel employee from the wedding ceremony.

Her name tag read MARIA SANTOS.

Maria’s face was pale.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

Rebecca glanced down the corridor.

“Come in.”

Maria entered quickly.

Rebecca locked the door.

Claire woke at the sound.

Her eyes widened.

“I know you.”

Maria nodded.

“I work at the Whitmore Grand.”

Claire pushed herself upright.

“You were upstairs.”

Maria looked toward Rebecca.

“I saw what happened.”

The words changed everything.

Rebecca called Detective Reyes immediately.

He returned within ten minutes.

Maria refused to speak until the door was locked again.

She kept looking toward the hallway.

Reyes sat opposite her.

“Start with the memory card.”

Maria clasped her hands tightly.

“The hotel has cameras everywhere.”

Nathan had told police the service stairwell cameras were not functioning.

According to Maria, that was a lie.

The cameras had been working.

At least until shortly after Claire was injured.

Maria had been supervising the evening housekeeping crew.

Around 9:00 p.m., she received a call from hotel security ordering her staff away from the eighth-floor service corridor.

Unusual.

Then she heard shouting.

She walked toward the stairwell.

Through a partially open door, she saw Claire backing away from Nathan and Julian.

Eleanor stood behind them.

Maria could not hear every word.

But she heard Claire say:

“I am not signing anything.”

She saw Nathan grab Claire’s wrist.

She saw Claire pull away.

She saw Julian block the exit.

She saw Eleanor say something and point toward Claire’s phone.

Then Maria heard a crash.

Claire fell against the stair rail.

Maria ran.

By the time she reached them, Claire was on the landing.

Conscious.

Terrified.

Nathan shouted for Maria to leave.

She refused.

Then Julian approached her.

Maria stepped backward.

Eleanor changed tone instantly.

“Maria, this is a family matter.”

Maria knew exactly what that meant.

Not because this was the first time she had seen the Whitmores make a problem disappear.

But because she had seen it before.

Rebecca looked at her.

“What happened before?”

Maria hesitated.

Reyes said, “You’re not in trouble.”

Maria almost laughed.

“You don’t understand.”

Three years earlier, a hotel accountant named Daniel Pierce discovered irregular transfers from several Whitmore development accounts.

He reported them internally.

Two weeks later, he was accused of theft.

He lost his job.

His reputation.

His professional license.

No charges were ever filed.

But the accusation was enough.

Daniel left the state.

Maria had been working the executive floors at the time.

She remembered Eleanor telling a manager, “Some people only understand consequences.”

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that have to do with Claire?”

“I don’t know.”

Maria reached into her purse.

She removed a folded envelope.

“I copied the security footage before they erased it.”

Reyes sat straighter.

“How?”

Maria explained that a supervisor’s terminal in housekeeping had temporary camera access for guest-safety coordination.

She downloaded the hallway footage to a memory card.

But she knew hotel security would search her.

She needed somewhere to hide it.

Then she saw Claire’s wedding dress on a gurney as paramedics were preparing to leave.

The lining was torn.

Maria slipped the card inside.

Rebecca looked toward the evidence bag.

“You risked your job.”

Maria shook her head.

“My job was already gone.”

She had received a termination email less than an hour after leaving the hotel.

Cause:

Unauthorized access to restricted security systems.

Rebecca absorbed that.

“They knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then why come here?”

Maria’s eyes moved to Claire.

“Because I have a daughter too.”

Claire began to cry quietly.

Maria looked at Reyes.

“The card has only the camera footage I copied.”

“Only?”

Maria nodded.

“The other evidence is somewhere else.”

Reyes leaned forward.

“What other evidence?”

“The microphone recording.”

Everyone went still.

Maria explained that the Whitmore Grand had recently installed a conference security system in private executive rooms.

The office where Claire had been pressured to sign the agreement was equipped for remote business meetings.

Audio logs were automatically retained for twenty-four hours unless manually deleted.

Maria had not accessed them.

But someone else had.

“Who?”

“The hotel’s night IT manager.”

“Name?”

Maria hesitated.

“Evan Brooks.”

Reyes wrote it down.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

Maria had called him after copying the hallway video.

Evan said he had heard enough of the audio recording to know the Whitmores were in serious trouble.

Then the call disconnected.

He never answered again.

Reyes stood.

“I need his address.”

Maria gave it to him.

Claire suddenly said, “Wait.”

Everyone turned.

“The numbers.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“What numbers?”

“The wristband.”

Rebecca remembered.

Claire pointed to the black folder Rebecca had carried from Fort Liberty.

“How did that get there?”

Rebecca froze.

She had discovered Claire’s hospital wristband beneath Claire’s emergency-contact card before leaving.

At the time, she assumed it was an old medical band Claire had somehow left behind during a previous visit.

But Claire had never been admitted to St. Matthew’s before.

Rebecca opened the folder.

The wristband was still there.

CLAIRE WHITMORE.

ST. MATTHEW’S.

ROOM 814.

Today’s date.

Reyes stared.

“That’s impossible.”

Rebecca felt cold.

“I found this in my office before I left Fort Liberty.”

Maria whispered, “Someone knew where she’d be.”

Claire’s face went white.

The room number had been assigned only after admission.

Which meant someone had printed or obtained the wristband at the hospital.

Then somehow gotten it to Rebecca’s office nearly two hours away before Rebecca left.

Unless—

Rebecca turned the band over.

Three handwritten numbers.

But the printed patient information looked wrong.

Reyes examined it.

“The barcode.”

He scanned it using his phone camera.

Nothing.

He turned it under the light.

“This is fake.”

Rebecca stared.

Not a hospital band.

A message.

Someone had wanted Rebecca to notice room 814.

Before Claire even called.

Maria stepped backward.

“No.”

“What?” Rebecca asked.

Maria looked terrified.

“I know that handwriting.”

Rebecca held up the wristband.

“You do?”

Maria nodded.

“Evan Brooks.”

Silence.

Reyes looked toward the door.

“Then Evan knew something was going to happen before it happened.”

That possibility was worse.

It meant Claire’s attack might not have been an argument that escalated.

It might have been anticipated.

Planned.

Reyes called another officer and requested an immediate welfare check at Evan’s address.

While he spoke, Claire stared at Nathan’s sealed phone.

“Mom.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“What if they wanted me in that room?”

Rebecca did not answer.

Claire continued.

“What if the argument was supposed to happen?”

Rebecca’s mind moved quickly.

Postnuptial agreement.

Financial guarantees.

Private arbitration.

Pressure.

A witness.

Security cameras suddenly disabled.

A false narrative ready to sign at the hospital.

It did not feel spontaneous.

Eleanor had arrived with paperwork before Claire had even fully recovered.

Rebecca looked at Maria.

“Did Nathan hit Claire?”

Maria lowered her eyes.

“I saw him grab her.”

“And Julian?”

“He blocked her.”

“What about Eleanor?”

Maria hesitated.

“She never touched Claire.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“But she told them not to let me leave.”

Maria nodded.

Rebecca felt something inside her settle.

Not rage.

Purpose.

The same feeling she had experienced during difficult operations when confusion finally gave way to a clear objective.

Protect Claire.

Preserve evidence.

Find Evan.

Expose whatever had been built around them.

Reyes ended his call.

“Officers are going to Brooks’s apartment now.”

Maria looked relieved.

For approximately thirty seconds.

Then Reyes’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Rebecca stood.

Reyes listened.

Then asked, “Are you sure?”

A pause.

“I’m on my way.”

He ended the call.

Claire whispered, “What happened?”

Reyes looked at Maria.

“Evan Brooks isn’t at his apartment.”

Maria’s face fell.

“They found the door open.”

Rebecca waited.

Reyes continued.

“His computer is gone.”

Maria covered her mouth.

“And there’s something written on the kitchen wall.”

Rebecca asked, “What?”

Reyes looked directly at her.

“Room 814.”

Before anyone could speak, Maria’s phone vibrated.

She looked down.

A message.

Her hands began shaking.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Who is it?”

Maria turned the screen toward them.

Unknown sender.

One sentence.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED QUIET.

Then another message appeared.

THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING.

Maria dropped the phone onto the bed.

Claire gasped.

May you like

Reyes reached for it.

And then the lights in room 814 went out.
