Chapter 4 - The First Commander

Adrian Cross had aged exactly the way Nathan imagined a ghost might age.

Slowly.

Unfairly.

Gray hair.

Deep lines.

A cane in one hand.

But the same sharp blue eyes Nathan remembered from training rooms, safe houses, and briefing tables.

Nathan stopped ten feet away.

Cross smiled.

"Hello, Nate."

Mercer raised his pistol.

Cross looked at it.

"David. Still dramatic."

"Still dead," Mercer replied.

Cross nodded.

"That makes two of us."

Nathan's voice remained flat.

"Caroline."

"Alive."

"Where?"

"Upstairs."

"Who has her?"

Cross's smile disappeared.

"Not me."

Nathan stepped closer.

"Then why are you here?"

"To stop you from walking into the trap."

"You called me."

"No."

Nathan studied him.

Cross continued.

"Someone is using old Atlas voice architecture."

Grant frowned.

"Voice cloning?"

"More sophisticated."

Nathan glanced at him.

"You expect me to believe you've been alive for twenty-five years and happened to appear tonight?"

"No."

"Good."

"I expect you to believe me after I show you what I brought."

Cross reached slowly into his coat.

Mercer tightened his grip.

Cross removed a paper envelope.

Actual paper.

No electronics.

He handed it to Nathan.

Inside was a photograph.

Samantha.

Taken three days earlier.

She stood outside a train station in Boston.

Alive.

Nathan's composure finally broke.

He stared at his sister.

Older.

Gray beginning at her temples.

But unmistakably Samantha.

On the back, two words had been written.

TRUST NO ONE.

Nathan looked up.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Who took this?"

"She did."

"How did you get it?"

"Courier."

"When?"

"This afternoon."

Nathan folded the photograph carefully.

Cross said, "She knew tonight was coming."

"How?"

"Because Emily's audit triggered Raven Vault's emergency protocol."

Grant asked, "What's the protocol?"

Cross looked at Nathan.

"Erase every surviving connection."

Nathan thought of the three rich boys.

"They were going to kill Emily."

"No."

Cross shook his head.

"They were supposed to frighten her."

Nathan's face changed.

"The beating wasn't ordered?"

"Not like that."

"So Ryan and his friends went too far."

"Young men who believe consequences are for other people."

Nathan stared at the elevators.

"And now their fathers are covering it up."

"Yes."

"Because the investigation could uncover Raven Vault."

"Exactly."

Nathan turned to Grant.

"Can we get Caroline?"

Grant opened his laptop.

"Building system is offline."

Cross said, "Service stairwell."

Nathan looked at him.

"You've been inside?"

"I designed half the emergency systems your company still uses."

Nathan almost laughed.

"Of course you did."

They moved.

On the twentieth floor, Marcus Kane and Rachel Cole joined them through a maintenance entrance.

Nathan saw his old team assembled for the first time in nineteen years.

Marcus.

Rachel.

Mercer.

Grant.

Cross.

Five people who had once known how Nathan breathed under fire.

He felt no nostalgia.

Only suspicion.

One of them might have betrayed Samantha.

Possibly more.

Rachel hugged Nathan once.

Briefly.

"I'm sorry about Emily."

"Help me make it matter."

She nodded.

Marcus looked at Cross.

"You."

Cross replied, "Me."

"You died."

"You people need new greetings."

They reached the executive floor.

The hallway was dark.

Grant whispered, "Two heat signatures in Nathan's office."

"Caroline plus one," Mercer said.

"Maybe."

Nathan signaled.

The team separated.

Old muscle memory.

Cross remained behind.

Nathan noticed.

"You're not coming?"

"I'm seventy."

"You were sixty when you taught me never to use age as an excuse."

Cross sighed.

"Fair."

They reached Nathan's office.

The door stood open.

Caroline sat in a chair.

Alone.

Tape covered her mouth.

Her hands were bound.

Nathan entered first.

Mercer swept left.

Marcus right.

Clear.

Nathan removed the tape.

"Caroline."

She gasped.

"He left."

"Who?"

"I couldn't see his face."

"What did he want?"

"He opened your safe."

Nathan turned.

The wall safe stood open.

Nothing inside should have mattered.

Old documents.

Retirement papers.

Photographs.

Then Nathan remembered.

A sealed mission log.

His handwritten Atlas notebook.

Gone.

Caroline said, "He told me to give you something."

She pointed toward the desk.

A cassette tape sat there.

Rachel stared.

"That's old-school."

Cross said, "Harder to intercept."

Grant produced a portable player from his bag.

Mercer looked at him.

"You carry that?"

"I carry everything."

They played the tape.

A man's voice.

Distorted naturally by age, not software.

"Nathan."

Everyone froze.

Nathan recognized it now.

General Warren Hale.

Former deputy director of military intelligence.

Atlas's political sponsor.

The man who had signed Nathan's retirement papers.

Hale had died twelve years earlier.

Or so Nathan had been told.

The recording continued.

"If you're hearing this, Emily found what Samantha couldn't finish."

Nathan looked at Cross.

Cross appeared equally surprised.

Hale's voice continued.

"Raven Vault was never a foreign network. It was created inside our own defense establishment after the Cold War."

Rachel whispered, "My God."

"The purpose was simple. Money that could move without congressional oversight. Operations that could be funded without records. Politicians benefited. Contractors benefited. Intelligence officers benefited."

Nathan stared at the tape player.

"Then it changed."

Hale coughed.

"The fund became a weapon. People used it to buy judges, bury investigations, influence elections, protect families."

Nathan thought of Vale.

Whitmore.

Caldwell.

"The Atlas unit discovered parts of the network by accident."

Marcus looked at Cross.

Cross's jaw tightened.

Hale continued.

"Samantha Sterling discovered more."

Nathan closed his eyes briefly.

"She identified the controlling committee."

The tape hissed.

Then Hale said:

"One member was inside Atlas."

Everyone in the office stopped moving.

Nathan looked from face to face.

Marcus.

Rachel.

Mercer.

Grant.

Cross.

Hale continued.

"I made the mistake of trying to protect the unit rather than exposing the traitor. People died because of that decision."

Nathan said quietly, "Name them."

The tape played on.

"The traitor's name is—"

Static.

The recording cut.

Grant swore.

"Damaged tape?"

"No," Rachel said.

"Someone erased it."

Nathan looked at the cassette.

Only that portion had been destroyed.

Intentional.

Cross walked toward the window.

Nathan watched him.

"Adrian."

Cross didn't turn.

"What?"

"You knew Hale."

"So did you."

"Better than I did."

"Yes."

"Did you know Raven Vault was domestic?"

Cross slowly turned.

"I suspected."

"When?"

"Before Atlas dissolved."

Marcus stepped forward.

"You said nothing?"

Cross looked at them.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Nathan's voice became icy.

"Everyone who lies says that eventually."

Cross accepted the accusation.

Caroline interrupted.

"The man who held me said something else."

Nathan looked at her.

"What?"

"He said the commander's daughter wasn't the target."

Nathan's stomach tightened.

"Then who was?"

Caroline stared at him.

"You."

Silence.

Rachel asked, "Why beat Emily if Nathan was the target?"

Cross answered.

"To wake him up."

Nathan looked toward the photograph of Samantha.

"The cuff link."

Cross nodded.

"To bring Atlas together."

Mercer swore.

"We walked straight into it."

Grant's laptop chimed.

Everyone looked.

He frowned.

"What?"

"Emily's hospital security feed."

Nathan crossed the room instantly.

Grant opened the stream.

Ortiz stood beside Emily's bed.

Two uniformed officers at the door.

Everything looked normal.

Then Rachel pointed.

"Back it up."

Grant rewound three seconds.

A nurse entered carrying medication.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Zoom."

Grant enlarged the image.

The nurse's badge.

Wrong font.

Nathan grabbed his phone.

Ortiz answered.

"What's wrong?"

"Get Emily out."

Ortiz immediately moved.

"Why?"

"The nurse isn't hospital staff."

On the screen, the fake nurse turned.

She realized Ortiz was watching her.

The woman dropped the medication tray and ran.

Ortiz chased her into the hallway.

Nathan shouted, "Stay with Emily!"

Too late.

The camera feed switched automatically.

Emily was alone.

Then the door to her room opened.

A second figure entered.

Nathan couldn't see the face.

The person walked toward the bed.

Nathan's blood turned cold.

"Emily!"

He could do nothing but watch.

The figure leaned down.

Emily woke.

And instead of screaming, she stared at the person in shock.

Then she whispered one word.

"Aunt Sam?"

Nathan stopped breathing.

The figure removed her hood.

May you like

Samantha Sterling looked directly into the security camera.

Then the feed went black.
