Chapter 4 - Unit 306

I moved between Claire and the door.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Emergency lights flickered along the hallway.

A figure stepped inside.

I grabbed the metal water pitcher from the bedside table.

“Mr. Carter?”

Officer Morgan raised both hands.

I exhaled so hard my knees weakened.

“Jesus.”

“Power failure on this wing.”

“What happened?”

“We’re checking.”

Officer Ruiz appeared behind him.

“Backup systems are functioning. The babies are secure.”

Claire struggled upright.

“My babies.”

“They’re safe,” Ruiz assured her. “Nursery is on emergency power.”

Dr. Hayes entered seconds later.

“Claire, lie back.”

The lights returned.

Nobody relaxed.

“Was that normal?” I asked.

“No,” Morgan said.

“What caused it?”

“Maintenance says a breaker was manually shut down.”

Ruiz looked at Claire.

“Someone accessed a restricted electrical room.”

Claire’s face went pale.

“Vanessa?”

“She’s being interviewed downstairs.”

“So someone else is involved.”

Ruiz didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I turned back to Claire.

“Tell me about the box.”

Her eyes moved toward the officers.

“Not here.”

Officer Ruiz closed the door.

“It’s secure.”

Claire shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

“Help us understand.”

For a moment, my wife looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

“I started suspecting Vanessa about six weeks ago.”

“Why?”

“She knew things.”

“What things?”

“Things I hadn’t told her.”

Claire looked at me.

“You remember when the nursery window latch broke?”

“Yes.”

“You thought the contractor damaged it.”

“Right.”

“Vanessa knew before I told anyone.”

I frowned.

“She was helping with the nursery.”

“I hadn’t told her the latch existed.”

My skin prickled.

“Maybe she saw it.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Claire swallowed.

“Then she mentioned the blue blanket.”

“What blue blanket?”

“The one I bought for our first baby.”

I went silent.

We had packed it away after the miscarriage.

Neither of us could bear to look at it.

“Vanessa had never seen it,” Claire said. “I bought it alone. I never posted a picture. I never showed her.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked why I still kept ‘that little blue blanket in the cedar box.’”

Margaret sat down hard in a chair.

“How would she know?”

Claire looked toward me.

“I started checking the house.”

My chest tightened.

“What did you find?”

“A camera.”

Margaret gasped.

“Where?”

“In the nursery.”

I felt sick.

“Where?”

“Inside the smoke detector.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know who put it there.”

“You thought it could be me?”

“No.”

The immediate answer helped.

But not enough.

“I didn’t tell you because whoever installed it might realize we found it.”

Officer Ruiz leaned forward.

“Do you still have the device?”

Claire nodded.

“Safe-deposit box.”

“Which bank?”

“I’ll give you everything.”

“Continue.”

“I didn’t destroy the camera. I replaced it with another detector and started watching Vanessa.”

“How?”

“She gave me her tablet one afternoon to choose photographs for the baby shower.”

Claire paused.

“I saw a notification from a storage company.”

“Unit 306.”

“Yes.”

“You went there.”

“I followed her.”

“Did she see you?”

“I didn’t think so.”

“What did you find?”

“The unit wasn’t locked.”

Ruiz frowned.

“You entered?”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

Claire looked at me.

“Your life.”

I stared.

“Pictures of you from college. Your first apartment. Your father’s funeral. Your old office.”

My mother covered her mouth.

“Before Claire knew Vanessa?” Ruiz asked.

“Yes.”

“How far back?”

“Almost twelve years.”

I felt as though the floor had shifted.

“I met Vanessa eight years ago.”

Claire nodded.

“She knew you before you knew her.”

No one spoke.

The implications were too large.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“The box with my name?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“There were letters.”

“From who?”

“Vanessa.”

“To me?”

“Yes.”

“I never received letters from her.”

“I know.”

“What did they say?”

Claire hesitated.

“Ethan…”

“Tell me.”

“She wrote them as if you were together.”

My stomach dropped.

“She described dates that never happened. Trips. Arguments. A proposal.”

Margaret whispered, “Oh my God.”

“She created an entire relationship?”

Claire nodded.

“There were photographs too. Some real. Some altered.”

“Chicago.”

“Yes.”

“Did you find that photo?”

“A different version.”

“What do you mean?”

“You were alone in the original.”

That confirmed Ruiz’s suspicion.

“What else?”

Claire began crying.

I moved toward her.

She reached for my hand.

This time she held it.

“There was a hospital bracelet.”

I frowned.

“Whose?”

“Mine.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It was from our miscarriage.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“How did she get it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Claire.”

“She had the pathology summary too.”

Dr. Hayes looked sharply at her.

“Your medical records?”

“Yes.”

“Those are protected records.”

“I know.”

Ruiz asked, “Who had access?”

“Hospital staff. My obstetrician’s practice. Insurance.”

Vanessa worked in none of those places.

Unless she had help.

The power failure.

The strange nurse Vanessa claimed to have seen.

The missing medication.

Someone wearing a hospital badge.

There was another person.

Maybe more than one.

“What was inside the box that scared you most?” I asked.

Claire looked at me.

“How do you know there was more?”

“Because you would have called the police if it were only photographs.”

She gave a tiny bitter smile.

“You know me.”

“Yes.”

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“There was a file labeled FUTURE.”

I felt cold.

“What was in it?”

“Plans.”

“What kind?”

“House plans.”

“For our house?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Rooms marked in different colors.”

Claire looked toward the empty spaces where the bassinets had been.

“The nursery was marked red.”

Nobody breathed.

“What else?”

“Our bedroom.”

“Red?”

“No.”

“What color?”

“Black.”

Margaret started crying quietly.

Officer Ruiz stood.

“We need that unit secured immediately.”

Claire shook her head.

“It’s empty.”

Ruiz stopped.

“What?”

“I went back two days later with my phone to photograph everything.”

“And?”

“Gone.”

“All of it?”

“The unit had been cleaned.”

“You were seen.”

Claire nodded.

“I realized that later.”

“Did Vanessa confront you?”

“No.”

“Any threats?”

“No.”

“Messages?”

“One.”

Claire reached toward the drawer.

“My phone.”

I handed it to her.

She opened a screenshot.

Unknown sender.

THREE CHILDREN CHANGE EVERYTHING.

I stared at it.

“Three weeks ago?”

“Yes.”

“You never told me.”

“I thought it was spam at first.”

“Then why screenshot it?”

“Because the next message came one minute later.”

She swiped.

YOU WON’T GET TO KEEP EVERYTHING.

A cold rage settled inside me.

Not panic.

Not confusion.

Rage.

Someone had threatened my wife while she carried my children.

Someone had watched us.

Someone had entered our home.

Someone might have manipulated my past for years.

And tonight they had nearly killed Claire.

Officer Ruiz took photographs of the messages.

“We need detectives here now.”

“Already called,” Morgan said.

Dr. Hayes’s pager sounded.

He checked it.

His face changed.

“What?” I asked.

“The lab.”

“Results?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

He looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“The substance in the recovered bottle is a concentrated sedative.”

My mother gasped.

“Could it cause what happened?”

“Yes.”

“Could it kill her?”

“At that concentration?”

He paused.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

I squeezed her hand.

Officer Ruiz’s radio crackled.

“Ruiz, we have another issue.”

She lifted it.

“Go.”

“Vanessa Hale is requesting an attorney.”

“That’s her right.”

“She also gave us a name.”

Ruiz looked at me.

“What name?”

The radio hissed.

“A hospital employee.”

Dr. Hayes went still.

“Who?”

The answer came through clearly.

“Dr. Stephen Mercer.”

Dr. Hayes’s face lost all color.

I noticed immediately.

“You know him.”

Hayes didn’t answer.

“You know him.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Claire opened her eyes.

Dr. Hayes looked at both of us.

“He was the physician on duty the night you lost your first pregnancy.”

The room went silent.

My mother whispered, “No.”

Then Morgan’s radio crackled again.

“Ruiz.”

“What?”

“We checked Mercer’s schedule.”

“And?”

“He’s in the building.”

“Where?”

A pause.

May you like

Then the dispatcher answered.

“Newborn nursery.”
