Chapter 8 - The Recording They Tried to Erase

Mercer had built parts of my legal infrastructure.

He knew emergency protocols.

But systems change.

People change.

Dominic had rewritten most of them after Elena died.

Mercer expected doors to open.

Some did.

Others sealed.

That trapped him.

Security found him in the old wine corridor.

No dramatic gunfight.

No blood.

Just an aging attorney standing between two locked steel doors, holding a laptop.

He surrendered.

When they brought him upstairs, Matteo stared.

Then hid his face against Clara.

That was enough for me.

"You met my son."

Mercer smiled.

"I handled his trust."

"At the hospital."

His smile faded.

Matteo remembered.

Mercer had visited Boston under my identity.

Used authorization documents to access records.

Moved money through medical accounts.

Elena discovered it because she knew I hadn't been in Boston that week.

"Why kill her?"

"I didn't."

Again.

Everyone denied that part.

Mercer admitted fraud.

Identity theft.

Manipulating records.

Threatening Elena indirectly.

But not changing the explosive trigger.

Then who had?

We returned to Elena's damaged recording.

Mercer's laptop contained fragments.

He had been trying to destroy copies for months.

Clara noticed a synchronization folder.

One file had uploaded before his arrest.

We recovered it.

Elena appeared.

This time the missing section played.

"The real account administrator is Michael Mercer."

I looked at him.

No surprise.

Then Elena continued.

"But Mercer isn't the person who changed the car."

My blood froze.

"He doesn't know I discovered the second access log."

Second access.

"The trigger was changed from inside our estate at 8:12 that morning."

Dominic checked historical records.

8:12.

Elena entered the SUV at 8:19.

Explosion at 8:31.

Someone inside my house had activated it.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"I know who."

The video paused.

Then continued.

"If you're watching this, Vincent, protect Matteo from the truth until he's ready."

Matteo squeezed Clara's hand.

"The person who changed the trigger was trying to kill you."

Me.

Not Elena.

The room disappeared around me.

The bomb had been intended for me.

Elena wasn't the target.

She died because someone expected me inside that SUV.

"Who?" I whispered.

Elena answered.

"Samuel Keene."

I turned toward Keene.

He looked stunned.

"No."

Elena continued.

"Keene told Lawrence he was only damaging the vehicle. But the estate log shows his credentials changed the trigger."

Keene shook his head.

"My credentials were stolen."

Dominic checked.

Possible.

Then Elena said:

"I confronted him."

Video changed.

Hidden camera footage.

Elena meeting Keene.

Keene looked terrified.

He handed her something.

A security token.

"I didn't do it," recorded Keene said. "Someone cloned my access."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Elena held up a photograph.

We couldn't see it.

Keene reacted.

"Oh God."

"Who is he?"

Then he said a name.

The audio distorted.

Again.

I almost threw the computer.

Clara stopped me.

"Wait."

She replayed the sound.

Three syllables.

Not a name.

A title.

"Your driver."

I turned.

My driver at the time.

Anthony.

He died six months after Elena.

Heart attack.

Or so I'd been told.

Dominic searched.

Anthony had a son.

A son drowning in gambling debt.

Mercer had paid those debts.

The pieces aligned.

Anthony had cloned Keene's credentials.

Changed the trigger.

Expected me in the vehicle.

Elena entered instead.

Afterward, guilt consumed him.

He contacted Elena's investigator.

Before he could testify, he died.

But he'd left something.

A storage locker.

We found the key number inside Mercer's files.

The locker contained documents, backups, and a handwritten confession.

Anthony had changed the trigger under Mercer's instructions.

Mercer had lied.

He hadn't merely stolen.

He had tried to kill me to hide it.

Elena died in my place.

Mercer finally stopped smiling.

Police arrived before dawn.

Not my guards.

Police.

Because I wanted this ended properly.

Evidence.

Charges.

Courts.

Truth.

Not revenge.

Mercer was taken away.

Lawrence too.

Keene faced his own consequences for his role.

Vale agreed to cooperate with investigators regarding the facilities.

For the first time in fourteen months, the danger had a shape.

And an ending.

Or so I thought.

Then Clara found one final envelope inside Anthony's locker.

It was addressed to Matteo.

In Elena's handwriting.

Matteo stared at it.

Then at me.

"Read it."

I opened the envelope.

May you like

Inside was a letter.

And beneath it, a photograph that made Clara suddenly cover her mouth.
