Chapter 5 - The Plan to Make Me Incapable

Lorraine walked into my hallway as though she still owned the right to enter.

Daniel moved in front of me.

"Stop."

She closed the door behind her.

"Don't be ridiculous."

Melissa stood.

"Mom, how did you get in?"

Lorraine looked at her daughter.

"You should come home."

"No."

"Melissa."

"No."

Lorraine's face hardened.

I pointed to the key in her hand.

"Where did you get that?"

She glanced at it.

"This?"

"Yes."

"Evan gave it to me."

"He doesn't have a current key."

"It's not a normal key."

I looked toward the security panel.

Master override.

Of course.

Evan hadn't merely kept access.

He had arranged administrative access.

I felt stupid for believing a changed code was enough.

Daniel held out his hand.

"Give me the key."

Lorraine laughed.

"You have no authority over me."

"No. But Caroline does over who enters her property."

I stepped around him.

"Leave."

Lorraine looked at me.

"You still don't understand what's happening."

"I understand enough."

"No, you understand fragments."

"Then enlighten me."

"Caroline," Daniel warned.

I raised a hand.

I wanted her talking.

The hidden camera was still recording.

So was Melissa's phone now.

Lorraine didn't know about the backup cameras in the hall.

"Why was my grandmother in your family ledger?"

That question worked.

Her expression changed.

Just a fraction.

"You saw the ledger."

"Yes."

"Rachel."

Not a question.

I said nothing.

Lorraine removed her coat.

"May I sit?"

"No."

She smiled.

Then she sat anyway.

"You always were stubborn."

"You barely knew me before I married Evan."

"I knew your family."

I felt cold.

"How?"

"Your grandmother and my husband did business together."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Charles never mentioned Eleanor Vale."

Lorraine smiled at him.

"Charles didn't mention many things to you."

"Meaning?"

"He didn't trust you."

"That didn't answer me."

Lorraine looked at me.

"Your grandmother loaned Charles money."

I blinked.

"Why?"

"Because they were friends."

"My grandmother hated debt."

"She didn't call it debt. She called it an investment."

"How much?"

"Six hundred thousand."

The ledger amount.

I stared at her.

"Did he repay her?"

Lorraine's smile faded.

"No."

My grandmother had sold her lake property twenty-four years ago.

My mother always said she wanted something smaller after my grandfather died.

What if that wasn't true?

"What happened?"

"Charles's business collapsed."

"What business?"

"Property development."

"And Grandma lost the money?"

"Most of it."

My anger shifted.

"Then why did she still have enough to leave me an inheritance?"

Lorraine looked at Daniel.

He looked equally confused.

"Because she recovered some of it later."

"How?"

"She threatened to expose Charles."

"For what?"

Lorraine stayed silent.

"Fraud?"

Still nothing.

I stepped closer.

"Did Charles forge documents too?"

Lorraine laughed softly.

"Oh, Caroline. Charles taught Evan everything."

Melissa made a broken sound.

"Mom."

Lorraine looked at her.

"Your father built this family."

"By stealing houses?"

"By surviving."

"Those aren't the same."

Lorraine ignored her.

I said, "And you helped."

Her gaze returned to me.

"Families help each other."

I almost admired the ease with which she rationalized it.

"Why target my house?"

"Because Charles believed your grandmother still owed him."

I stared.

"After he failed to repay her?"

"You don't know the full history."

"Then tell me."

"Your grandmother threatened him. She took records. She took clients."

"She took what belonged to her."

"That's one interpretation."

I wanted to throw Lorraine out.

Instead, I needed her to keep talking.

"What does 'execute after Caroline is declared incapacitated' mean?"

For the first time, true alarm crossed her face.

She hadn't expected me to see that page.

"Nothing."

"Wrong answer."

"It's an old contingency."

"To do what?"

"Protect Lily."

"By replacing me as trustee?"

"Yes."

"Against my wishes?"

"If necessary."

"Necessary how?"

Lorraine stood.

"This conversation is over."

"No."

"You wanted answers. You got them."

"I haven't."

She picked up her coat.

Daniel blocked her path again.

"Let her leave," I said.

He turned.

I shook my head slightly.

Lorraine walked toward the door.

Then Melissa said:

"Mom, did you tell Evan to have Caroline evaluated?"

Lorraine froze.

My pulse jumped.

I looked at Melissa.

"What?"

She seemed terrified of her own memory.

"Last Christmas."

"Tell me."

"I heard them arguing in Mom's kitchen."

Lorraine turned.

"Melissa, don't."

"You said if Caroline wouldn't cooperate, there were other ways."

"That could mean anything."

"You mentioned a doctor."

I looked at Lorraine.

"What doctor?"

She put her coat down again.

"Caroline had been under stress."

I almost laughed.

"So you planned to have me declared mentally incompetent?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"We were concerned."

"We?"

"Evan and I."

"You tried to humiliate me tonight while Melissa filmed because you were concerned?"

Lorraine's eyes flicked toward the camera over the dining doorway.

Too late.

She knew.

"Turn that off."

"No."

"You're recording me without consent."

"This is my home."

She looked toward Daniel.

He said, "State law permits Caroline to record under these circumstances."

Lorraine's composure cracked.

"You're making a mistake."

I took one step closer.

"No. My mistake was trusting your son."

Her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Evan.

She declined it.

That surprised me.

A second call.

She declined again.

"Why aren't you answering him?"

"Not your concern."

Then my phone rang.

Evan.

I answered.

"Where is my mother?"

I looked at Lorraine.

"Standing in my hallway."

"Do not let her leave."

Everyone stared at me.

I put the phone on speaker.

Lorraine's face changed.

"Evan."

His voice shook.

"Mom, what did you do?"

She stepped forward.

"What are you talking about?"

"The account."

"What account?"

"The Zurich account."

Daniel straightened.

Priya started typing.

Lorraine said, "Stop talking."

"No."

"Evan."

"You told me the money was gone."

She looked toward the door.

Daniel quietly moved closer.

Evan continued.

"You lied to me."

Lorraine said, "We can discuss this privately."

"You took it."

"What money?" I demanded.

Evan ignored me.

"All of it?"

Lorraine said nothing.

"Mom!"

She snapped, "Lower your voice."

"You stole from me."

I almost laughed at the irony.

Lorraine looked furious.

"It was never yours."

"I borrowed against Caroline's house for that money!"

My chest tightened.

Daniel whispered, "Keep him talking."

I said, "Evan, what account?"

He breathed hard.

"The investment account."

"The gambling money?"

"It wasn't all gambling."

Lorraine closed her eyes.

I knew he had just contradicted himself again.

"Explain."

He did.

The private loan proceeds hadn't all been lost.

About five hundred thousand dollars went into high-risk betting and market schemes.

But three hundred thousand went to Lorraine.

She told Evan she had access to an offshore fund that could hide money from creditors until he recovered.

Instead, she moved it somewhere he couldn't reach.

"Zurich?" Daniel asked.

"Yes."

Lorraine snapped, "You idiot."

Evan laughed bitterly.

"No, Mom. I'm done protecting you."

She looked as if she'd been struck.

"After everything I've done?"

"You took my money."

"You mean Caroline's money."

Silence.

Even Lorraine realized what she had said.

I let the words hang.

Then I asked:

"What exactly were you planning to do with my house once I was declared incapacitated?"

Nobody spoke.

"Evan?"

His breathing changed.

"Caroline..."

"Answer."

"I didn't want that part."

"What part?"

"Mom did."

Lorraine shouted, "Stop!"

Evan kept going.

"She wanted you evaluated."

"By whom?"

"A doctor she knows."

"What would happen after that?"

"You'd be declared unable to manage complex finances."

I felt my skin go cold.

"And then?"

"I would petition to manage marital assets."

"My house isn't a marital asset."

"I know."

"Then why?"

He said nothing.

Daniel's face went pale.

He understood first.

"Because Lily," he said.

I turned.

"What?"

"If Caroline were declared incapacitated, they could argue she was also unfit to serve as trustee for Lily."

Priya nodded.

"And with Lily's replacement-trustee document already signed..."

"Robert takes control," I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"And the trust assets could be pledged."

Four hundred thousand dollars.

My daughter's money.

Then, perhaps later, my home through another forged transfer.

They weren't stealing one asset.

They were building a sequence.

"Who is the doctor?" I asked.

Evan hesitated.

Lorraine stared at the floor.

"Evan."

"Dr. Grant Holloway."

Melissa gasped.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"That's Mom's doctor."

Lorraine said, "He is a respected psychiatrist."

"Did he evaluate me?"

"No."

"Did he write something about me?"

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel said, "Evan, was there already a report?"

"Draft report."

I gripped the table.

"Based on what?"

"Videos."

I stared at Melissa.

Her face collapsed.

"No."

Lorraine said nothing.

I understood.

Tonight wasn't the first recording.

Melissa whispered, "Mom, you told me those were for Evan's therapist."

Lorraine didn't answer.

"What videos?" I asked.

Melissa started crying.

"Arguments. Family dinners. Times you got upset."

I felt violated in a way I had no words for.

Every disagreement.

Every exhausted moment.

Every private reaction.

Collected.

Edited.

Reframed.

Evidence.

They weren't merely waiting for me to become unstable.

They were constructing instability around me.

Daniel asked Evan, "Where is the draft report?"

"Mom has it."

Lorraine moved toward the door.

This time Daniel didn't block her.

Police lights suddenly flashed through the front windows.

Blue.

Red.

Across the walls.

Lorraine stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you call them?"

"No."

Someone knocked hard.

"Police!"

Lorraine went pale.

I opened the door.

Two officers stood outside.

Behind them was a plainclothes detective.

He showed his badge.

"Caroline Mercer?"

"Yes."

"I'm Detective Aaron Bell. We need to speak with you about a report involving your daughter."

My stomach dropped.

"Lily is safe."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Then what happened?"

He glanced past me at Lorraine.

Then back at me.

"Someone attempted to access her investment account forty minutes ago."

Daniel stepped forward.

"From where?"

The detective lifted a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

Evan's phone.

"We recovered this from a vehicle two blocks away."

I stared at it.

"Where is Evan?"

The detective's expression changed.

"We don't know."

Then another officer approached from the driveway.

"Detective."

He handed Bell a second evidence bag.

Inside was a torn envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Bell opened it carefully.

A photograph slid into view.

It showed me sleeping in my own bedroom.

Taken from inside the room.

On the back were three handwritten words:

PHASE III TONIGHT.
