Chapter 2 - The Photograph Hidden Behind the Lie

The woman outside my office door whispered: "Emma, don't let him know you saw anything."

When Dominic entered the room, I noticed the torn envelope he carried in his hand.

Inside it was a hospital record with one name circled in red: "Emma Carter."

Dominic suddenly realized someone had been searching for the truth.

I stood there completely still.

Dominic was standing at the entrance of his office.

The same office where he had spent countless nights working late.

The same office where I had brought him coffee when he forgot to eat.

The same office where he had locked away a secret that apparently mattered more than our marriage.

But that night, he wasn't alone.

Behind him stood Victoria.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes moved from me to the photograph in my hand.

And that reaction told me everything.

She knew exactly what I had found.

"Emma."

Dominic's voice was quieter now.

Almost gentle.

But I had learned something that night.

A gentle voice could still hide a cruel truth.

I held up the photograph.

"Who is she?"

Neither of them answered.

I looked down at the picture again.

Dominic looked younger.

Different.

The man in the photograph wasn't the confident businessman everyone admired.

He looked nervous.

Victoria stood beside him with her hand resting on his shoulder.

They weren't strangers.

They weren't people who had met recently.

They had history.

Eight years of history.

"How long have you known her?"

Dominic walked toward me slowly.

"Emma, listen to me."

"No."

The word came out calmer than I expected.

And that seemed to surprise him.

"No more explanations that start with me misunderstanding something."

Victoria stepped forward.

"Emma, it's not what you think."

I almost laughed.

That sentence.

The sentence every person says when the truth is exactly what you think.

I looked at her.

"Then tell me what it is."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she couldn't.

Because she knew.

Dominic immediately noticed.

"Victoria, leave."

She looked at him.

A strange sadness crossed her face.

"You still want to protect her?"

Dominic's expression changed.

Not because of the question.

Because of what it meant.

I watched them carefully.

There was a connection between them.

Not just attraction.

Not just a secret affair.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Something dangerous.

"Protect me from what?" I asked.

Silence.

The silence was louder than any confession.

Dominic reached for the photograph.

I moved it away.

"No."

His eyes narrowed.

"Emma."

"Why is this hidden?"

He didn't answer.

"Why was your picture with another woman locked inside your office?"

Still nothing.

"Why did she say I wasn't supposed to find out?"

That was when Dominic froze.

For the first time since the ballroom, he looked genuinely afraid.

"You heard that?"

I stared at him.

So that was the truth.

Not whether I heard.

But whether I knew.

"You weren't worried about what happened tonight."

My voice became quieter.

"You were worried about what I discovered."

Dominic looked away.

That small movement hurt more than the slap.

Because it confirmed everything.

My husband had secrets.

And those secrets had names.

I placed the photograph on his desk.

"Tell me about Victoria."

He sat down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he finally spoke.

"Before I met you, my life was different."

I crossed my arms.

"How different?"

He looked at Victoria.

She looked down.

"Eight years ago, Victoria and I were involved in a business partnership."

I waited.

But he stopped there.

A business partnership.

That was the story.

The safe version.

The version that explained nothing.

"And?"

Dominic sighed.

"And something happened."

"What happened?"

His fingers tightened.

"I made mistakes."

I looked at him.

"Mistakes?"

The word felt insulting.

"Is that what you call hiding another woman from your wife?"

Victoria suddenly spoke.

"Dominic didn't want you involved."

I turned toward her.

"Why?"

She looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something I didn't expect.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

"Because the people who know about that time are not safe."

The room became colder.

I almost ignored the sentence.

Almost.

But something about the way she said it made me believe her.

Not because I trusted her.

Because she sounded afraid.

"Who are these people?"

Neither answered.

That was becoming their favorite response.

Silence.

Secrets.

Half-truths.

I picked up the photograph again.

"Who wrote this?"

I turned it over.

The sentence was still there.

She was never supposed to survive.

Dominic looked at it.

And his face changed.

"You need to give that to me."

"No."

"Emma."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Not until you tell me why someone wrote this."

Dominic stood.

"Because you don't understand what you're holding."

"Then explain it."

He looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to hold my hand when I was nervous.

The man who promised he would never lie to me.

Then that image disappeared.

Because the man in front of me had spent years choosing silence.

"Emma, eight years ago, Victoria was supposed to testify against someone."

"Against who?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation was the answer.

Someone powerful.

Someone dangerous.

Someone Dominic didn't want to name.

Before I could ask again, my phone rang.

The same unknown number.

Dominic looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

"Don't answer."

That was the first time he had ever told me not to do something.

So I answered.

"Hello?"

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice came through.

"Emma Carter."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who is this?"

The voice ignored my question.

"You found the photograph."

I looked at Dominic.

He was staring at the phone.

Like he knew exactly who was calling.

"You should ask your husband why he erased one name from the original records."

My heart started beating faster.

"What records?"

The man continued.

"The records from the night Victoria disappeared."

Victoria stepped backward.

Her face changed.

"Who is this?"

The caller ignored her.

"Emma, your husband didn't save Victoria eight years ago."

A pause.

"He saved himself."

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Dominic looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked at Dominic.

And suddenly, the two people who had been hiding secrets from me looked terrified of each other.

I turned toward my husband.

"What does he mean?"

Dominic didn't answer.

Instead, he walked quickly toward his desk.

He opened the bottom drawer.

The drawer I had never seen him touch.

Inside was a folder.

Old.

Worn.

Hidden beneath years of paperwork.

He pulled it out.

Then he stopped.

Because something was missing.

The folder was empty.

Dominic looked at me.

Then at Victoria.

"Where is it?"

Victoria's face went completely white.

"I thought you had it."

Dominic grabbed the folder tighter.

"No."

His voice shook.

"I gave it to you."

Victoria stepped back.

"I never had it."

Then Dominic's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

He read it.

And all color disappeared from his face.

I watched him slowly turn the screen toward me.

There was only one sentence.

"Your wife already knows what happened the night she died."

I looked at Dominic.

Confused.

Because I had never died.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A photograph taken inside my house.

Inside my bedroom.

May you like

And in the picture...

Someone was standing beside my bed.
