Chapter 7 - The Night They Came for His Fiancée

Dante ran.
Elena had never seen a human being move that fast.
Richard and Matteo followed.
Margaret grabbed Elena's arm.
"Stay here."
Elena pulled free.
"No."
"Elena—"
"He'll kill Sofia."
"And he'll kill you too."
"He's been trying to control me for seventeen years without me even knowing it. I'm done hiding."
Margaret stared at her daughter.
Then nodded once.
"That stubbornness came from your father."
"I know. I'm currently furious about that too."
They ran upstairs.
The master-bedroom corridor was dark.
Dante reached the door.
Locked.
"Marco!"
Silence.
Dante kicked it.
Once.
Twice.
Wood cracked.
Inside, Sofia screamed.
Dante hit the door again.
It burst open.
The room was empty.
Except for the ivory robe placed neatly on the bed.
Dante froze.
Elena entered behind him.
"Sofia?"
No answer.
A phone lay on the pillow.
Video playing.
Marco smiled from the screen.
"Still too slow."
Dante picked it up.
"Where is she?"
"Pier 19."
Elena whispered:
"He used the camera footage to delay us."
Marco heard.
"Smart girl."
Dante's fist tightened.
"I swear—"
"Midnight."
The screen went black.
11:27.
They had thirty-three minutes.
The drive took twenty.
Dante's men regrouped.
Police couldn't be trusted yet because Marco's files implicated officers and officials.
Federal authorities couldn't arrive quickly enough.
So they went alone.
Not completely alone.
Dante had twenty loyal security men.
Richard had contacts Elena hadn't known existed.
Isabella insisted on coming because Matteo refused to let another family suffer alone.
At 11:56 p.m., they reached Pier 19.
Rain began falling.
Elena looked at Dante.
"Whatever happens—"
"No."
She frowned.
"I wasn't even finished."
"I know what people say when they start sentences like that."
"Maybe I was going to discuss catering."
"At midnight on a pier?"
"Occupational habit."
He looked at her.
Then his expression softened.
"You're not going inside."
"Dante."
"You're my wife."
Her heart stumbled.
The words were legally true.
Emotionally complicated.
"Because Marco forced us."
"Yes."
A beat.
"But if we survive tonight, I'm not pretending that means nothing."
Elena stared.
This man had terrible timing.
"Dante—"
Gunfire erupted nearby.
Security moved.
Dante pushed Elena behind an SUV.
"Stay down."
Men emerged from warehouses.
Marco's men.
Shots echoed across shipping containers.
Dante's security returned fire.
Elena crawled behind cover.
Richard appeared beside her.
"You okay?"
"Fantastic."
"You're definitely my daughter."
"Can we discuss genetics after nobody's shooting?"
Richard smiled.
Then pointed.
Warehouse 19.
Red door.
Of course.
Elena almost laughed.
"Apparently my life is just red doors now."
They reached it.
Dante joined them.
Isabella behind him.
Inside, Sofia sat tied to a chair.
Marco stood behind her.
Gun in hand.
Several armed men surrounded him.
"Enough," Marco said.
Everyone stopped.
Dante aimed.
Marco pressed his gun to Sofia's temple.
"Drop it."
Dante did.
Richard did.
Everyone did.
Marco smiled.
"There. Family unity."
Elena stepped forward.
"You wanted the ledger."
"Yes."
She held it up.
"Release Sofia."
Marco laughed.
"You really do negotiate like an event planner."
"People underestimate event planners."
"Frequently."
She tossed the ledger onto the floor halfway between them.
Marco motioned to a guard.
The man retrieved it.
Marco opened the book.
He smiled.
"Seventeen years."
Dante said:
"It's worthless."
Marco's smile faded.
"What?"
"The real records were hidden elsewhere."
Elena watched his face.
Fear.
First crack.
Marco looked at her.
"Where?"
She smiled.
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
He raised his gun toward her.
Dante moved instinctively.
Marco shouted:
"Don't."
Everyone froze.
"You think you're clever."
Elena's hand rested inside her coat pocket.
Her phone.
She had scheduled the federal email.
12:05 a.m.
Nine minutes.
If she didn't cancel it, everything would send.
Marco needed to keep talking.
"You planned my engagement."
"Yes."
"Why me?"
"Because your father made you necessary."
"What did he do?"
Marco laughed.
"He rewrote the trust."
Richard's face changed.
"What?"
Marco looked at him.
"You never knew?"
Richard shook his head.
"Samuel Brooks inserted a descendant clause. Richard modified it before his disappearance."
Dante frowned.
"What modification?"
"Control could never pass to one family alone. Moretti and Brooks heirs had to join voluntarily."
Elena's blood chilled.
"Voluntarily."
Marco smiled.
"That's where things became difficult."
Dante understood.
"You couldn't force the marriage."
"No."
"Then tonight's ceremony didn't activate anything."
Marco's smile disappeared.
Elena looked at Dante.
The priest had performed vows under threat.
Coercion.
Legally questionable.
Trust conditions likely unmet.
Marco had misunderstood.
Sofia started laughing despite the gun against her head.
"You lost."
Marco struck her.
Dante surged forward.
The gun pressed harder.
"Stay!"
Elena looked at the clock.
12:01.
Four minutes.
Marco grabbed her.
"You."
Dante's face became lethal.
"Don't touch her."
Marco pulled Elena against him and pressed the gun beneath her jaw.
"You and Dante will reaffirm the marriage willingly."
Elena's heart hammered.
"That seems unlikely."
"You'll do it or Sofia dies."
He looked toward Richard.
"Then your father."
Toward Margaret.
"Then your mother."
Elena stared at Dante.
His face told her one thing.
Don't.
But she understood another.
They needed time.
"Fine."
Marco blinked.
Dante said:
"Elena."
She looked at him.
"I'll do it."
Marco smiled.
He ordered the priest brought forward again.
The terrified man appeared.
Elena almost felt sorry for him.
"Ask us."
The priest swallowed.
Dante stared at Elena.
She gave him the smallest nod.
Trust me.
The priest began.
"Do you, Elena Brooks, freely—"
"Yes."
Dante's eyes widened slightly.
Marco smiled.
"And do you, Dante Moretti—"
Dante looked at Elena.
Then at Marco's gun.
Then back at her.
His voice became quiet.
"Yes."
Something unexpected happened inside Elena.
Even in this terrible place, even knowing strategy drove the moment, hearing him say it felt real.
Marco relaxed.
Too soon.
12:04.
One minute.
The priest completed the declaration.
Marco laughed.
"At last."
Elena looked at Dante.
"Do you trust me?"
He didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
She smiled.
"Good."
12:05.
Her phone vibrated.
EMAIL SENT.
Marco heard it.
His eyes dropped toward her pocket.
"What was that?"
Elena pulled out the phone.
"Your ending."
Marco grabbed it.
He saw the confirmation.
FEDERAL EVIDENCE PACKAGE DELIVERED.
His face went white.
"You stupid—"
Sofia slammed her chair backward into his knees.
Marco stumbled.
Elena dropped.
Dante moved.
Gunfire exploded.
Richard tackled one guard.
Isabella dragged Sofia behind crates.
Dante hit Marco with enough force to send him across the floor.
Marco fired wildly.
The bullet struck a metal beam.
Dante reached him.
They fought.
Hard.
Violent.
Years of betrayal behind every blow.
Marco reached for the fallen gun.
Elena saw it.
"Dante!"
Dante turned.
Marco aimed.
A shot cracked.
Marco froze.
Then collapsed.
Richard stood behind him holding the weapon.
Silence.
Dante stared at Marco.
It was over.
Or nearly.
Sirens approached.
Federal vehicles.
Police units cleared by prosecutors who had received the files.
Sofia clung to Dante.
For the first time, Elena saw him become a son.
Not a boss.
Not a billionaire.
Not the wolf everyone feared.
Just a man holding his mother.
Richard walked toward Elena.
She stared at him.
Then stepped into his arms.
She hated him.
She loved him.
She didn't know how both could exist.
But they did.
"You don't get forgiveness tonight," she whispered.
"I know."
"But you get a chance."
His arms tightened.
"That's more than I deserve."
Hours later, dawn approached.
Marco's surviving men were arrested.
Evidence recovered.
Matteo was taken safely to a hospital.
Sofia refused medical treatment until everyone else received it.
Isabella sat beside her father.
Margaret and Richard stayed several feet from Elena, understanding she needed space.
Dante found Elena at the edge of the pier.
The horizon was turning gold.
He stood beside her.
"We're married."
Elena laughed weakly.
"Apparently twice."
"The second one was voluntary."
"Under unusual circumstances."
"Still voluntary."
She looked at him.
"Are you trying to tell me something?"
"Possibly."
His voice became softer.
"When this is over legally, you can annul it."
Elena's chest tightened unexpectedly.
"You want that?"
"No."
The answer was immediate.
She stared.
Dante continued.
"I don't know how to do this correctly."
"Most people start with dinner."
"I can arrange dinner."
"I assumed."
He looked almost nervous.
Dante Moretti.
Nervous.
Elena smiled.
"So ask."
"Elena Brooks."
"Yes?"
"Would you have dinner with your husband?"
She laughed.
"That's a deeply strange sentence."
"Is that a yes?"
"Maybe."
He moved closer.
"Maybe?"
"You're accustomed to people immediately agreeing with you."
"Unfortunately."
"Then maybe is good for you."
His gaze dropped briefly toward her lips.
Then returned to her eyes.
Elena's heartbeat changed.
He leaned closer.
Stopped.
Giving her the choice.
She closed the distance.
Their first kiss was soft.
Nothing like the chaos around them.
When they separated, Dante rested his forehead against hers.
Then his phone rang.
He sighed.
Elena smiled.
"Real life."
He answered.
"Yes?"
His expression changed.
Elena's smile disappeared.
"What?"
Dante listened.
Then looked toward the federal vehicles.
"Are you certain?"
A pause.
"Send it."
He ended the call.
"What happened?"
Dante's phone received a photograph.
He showed her.
Marco Bellini's financial records.
One account continued moving money after Marco's arrest.
Someone else had access.
Someone higher.
Elena read the transfer destination.
MORETTI FOUNDATION.
Her stomach dropped.
A new name appeared beneath it.
AUTHORIZED SIGNATORY: SOFIA MORETTI.
Elena stared toward Dante's mother.
Sofia was standing beside an ambulance.
Her phone suddenly rang.
She answered.
Then slowly turned toward Dante.
Her expression went pale.
And from the phone in her hand came a man's voice everyone on that pier believed had died fifteen years ago.
May you like
Carlo Moretti said:
"Sofia, don't tell Dante I'm alive."
