Chapter 13 - Twenty Men Came Home

Dominic stepped in front of Toby.

Rebecca's hand shook.

“Move.”

“No.”

“I'll shoot.”

“No, you won't.”

“You don't know me.”

“I know exactly what you wanted.”

Dominic moved closer.

“You wanted someone to believe you mattered.”

Rebecca's face twisted.

“Shut up.”

“You built all this because your father chose power over you.”

August appeared behind her.

Federal agents followed.

Rebecca turned.

That was enough.

Mateo disarmed her.

Kaye grabbed Toby.

The nightmare ended without a shot.

Firefighters saved most of the diner.

The kitchen was destroyed.

The roof suffered damage.

The pie case somehow survived.

Kaye considered that a miracle.

Rebecca was arrested.

August entered federal custody.

Carlo cooperated.

Evidence from the ledger reopened Michael's attempted murder case and dozens of others.

Dominic surrendered financial records from his own organization.

Kaye stared at him when he told her.

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“I don't know.”

Toby overheard.

“You're going away?”

Dominic crouched.

“Maybe.”

“But you helped us.”

“That doesn't erase things I did before I knew you.”

Toby frowned.

“Adults make everything complicated.”

“They do.”

Kaye watched Dominic.

For weeks she had struggled to understand what he was to her.

Danger?

Friend?

Debt?

Something else?

She knew only this:

When her son disappeared, Dominic had come.

Not because she demanded it.

Because forty-three days earlier, she'd opened a door.

The investigation lasted months.

Dominic cooperated fully.

His information dismantled violent parts of the organization and helped prosecutors recover assets.

His attorneys negotiated.

Kaye reopened the diner.

Twenty men appeared on opening morning.

No guns.

No black coats.

Work clothes.

Mateo carried lumber.

Two men brought roofing materials.

Another brought a new stove.

Kaye stood outside.

“What is this?”

Mateo shrugged.

“Debt.”

“I didn't ask.”

“Boss did.”

“Dominic isn't your boss anymore.”

Mateo smiled.

“Old habits.”

They repaired Mercer’s Kettle.

Toby supervised.

Badly.

Michael, recovering steadily, became a regular.

Evan stayed nearby.

He did not ask Kaye to forgive him.

That helped.

He simply showed up for Toby.

School pickup.

Baseball.

Homework.

Small things.

Real things.

One afternoon, Kaye received a letter.

Dominic's handwriting.

Court tomorrow.

She read it twice.

The next morning, she sat behind him in the courtroom.

The judge spoke for nearly an hour.

Dominic had committed crimes.

He had also provided extraordinary cooperation.

There would be consequences.

But not the ones Kaye feared.

When court ended, Dominic turned.

Their eyes met.

He smiled.

Then an officer approached Kaye.

“Ms. Mercer?”

“Yes?”

“We found something among Rebecca Sloan's evidence.”

He handed her an envelope.

It contained a photograph of Toby.

On the back was a date from before Toby had been born.

Kaye stared.

“That isn't possible.”

The officer pointed toward the child in the photograph.

“That's not Toby.”

Kaye looked again.

He was right.

It was a different boy.

May you like

A boy who looked almost exactly like her son.

And beneath the photograph was one handwritten name...
