Chapter 2 - The Name Written on the Card

The black card slipped from my fingers.

"Emily Carter knows the truth."

I read the words again.

Then again.

But they did not change.

The security officer standing in front of me looked just as confused as I felt.

Maybe more.

Because he knew Adrian Blackwood.

He knew the man being carried away by paramedics.

He knew the power behind that name.

And yet somehow, a mysterious message connected that powerful man to me.

A woman who cleaned empty offices after midnight.

A woman who had never spoken a single word to Adrian Blackwood before that night.

"Why does it say my name?" I asked.

The officer did not answer.

He stared at the card in his hand like it was something dangerous.

"Where did you get that?" I asked again.

His fingers tightened around it.

"It fell from his jacket."

"Then why are you looking at me like I put it there?"

The question made him look away.

That scared me more than anything.

Because people usually look away when they are hiding something.

The paramedics rolled Adrian toward the exit.

The elevator doors remained open behind us.

The same elevator where, minutes earlier, I had been fighting to keep a stranger alive.

Now it felt different.

Like something had happened inside those walls that I did not understand.

The security officer finally spoke.

"My name is Daniel Reeves."

I looked at him.

"Okay."

"I've worked security for Blackwood Tower for fourteen years."

"Congratulations?"

He ignored my sarcasm.

"I have never seen that card before."

I crossed my arms.

"Then maybe you should ask your boss why his jacket had my name written on it."

Daniel looked toward the ambulance doors.

His expression became serious.

"Mr. Blackwood doesn't make mistakes."

I almost laughed.

"He collapsed in an elevator."

"That is not what I mean."

The way he said it made my stomach tighten.

Before I could ask another question, one of the paramedics returned.

"Are you Emily Carter?"

I froze.

"Yes."

"The hospital needs your contact information."

"Why?"

The paramedic glanced at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"Because you were the person who performed CPR."

I nodded slowly.

I gave him my phone number.

But I noticed something.

The paramedic never mentioned the card.

Daniel never mentioned the card.

And somehow, within less than ten minutes, everyone had decided the most important thing was pretending it did not exist.

I watched the ambulance disappear into the city night.

Then I looked down at my hands.

The same hands that had been cleaning floors earlier.

The same hands that had saved a billionaire.

The same hands that had touched the one clue everyone seemed afraid of.

I went home at 2:30 in the morning.

I barely remembered the drive.

My apartment was small.

One bedroom.

One old couch.

A kitchen where the refrigerator made a strange clicking sound every few minutes.

Normally, it felt safe.

That night, it felt like someone else was there.

I locked the door.

Then checked it again.

I placed my purse on the table.

And immediately saw my reflection in the dark window.

I looked exhausted.

Scared.

Confused.

I reached for my phone.

There were three missed calls.

All from an unknown number.

My heart stopped.

I stared at the screen.

I did not know why.

But something inside me already knew I should not call back.

Then my phone rang again.

Same number.

I answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

I waited.

"Hello?"

A man's voice finally spoke.

Low.

Calm.

"Where did you get the card?"

I stood completely still.

"Who is this?"

"You need to listen carefully."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"How do you know about the card?"

The man ignored my question.

"Do not give it to anyone."

I looked around my apartment.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"You have no idea what you found."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

The screen went dark.

I should have been afraid.

I was afraid.

But beneath the fear was something stronger.

Anger.

Because everyone knew something except me.

The security officer.

The mysterious caller.

Maybe even Adrian Blackwood.

And somehow, my name had been written on a card hidden inside his jacket.

I barely slept.

At 6:00 AM, I was sitting on my couch when someone knocked on my door.

Three slow knocks.

Not rushed.

Not friendly.

I looked through the peephole.

Nobody.

I waited.

Then the knocking came again.

Three more times.

My hand moved toward the lock.

Then stopped.

Because something was lying on the floor outside.

An envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened the door carefully.

The hallway was empty.

I picked up the envelope.

No address.

No return name.

Only:

Emily Carter.

Inside was a single photograph.

I turned it over.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of me.

Standing inside Blackwood Tower.

The night before.

Before Adrian collapsed.

Before I found him.

Someone had taken the photo while I was cleaning.

Someone had been watching me.

I flipped the picture around.

There was writing on the back.

One sentence.

"Ask Adrian why he remembers your name."

I dropped the photo.

Because there was one thing I knew.

Adrian Blackwood had never met me.

At least...

That was what I thought.

I spent the entire morning trying to convince myself there was an explanation.

Maybe he had seen my employee records.

Maybe someone was playing a cruel joke.

Maybe the card was planted.

Maybe the photograph meant nothing.

But every explanation fell apart when I opened my work email.

There was a message waiting.

From Blackwood International.

Subject:

"Mandatory Meeting."

I clicked it.

My hands were shaking.

The message contained only one line.

"Emily Carter, report to the executive floor at 9:00 AM. Mr. Blackwood would like to speak with you personally."

I read it five times.

Personally.

That word stayed in my head.

Because powerful people like Adrian Blackwood did not personally speak with people like me.

Unless there was a reason.

I arrived at Blackwood Tower thirty minutes early.

The same lobby looked completely different in daylight.

Employees walked quickly.

Phones rang.

People in expensive suits moved through the building like they owned the world.

Nobody knew that twelve hours earlier, I had been kneeling on this floor trying to save their boss.

I stepped into the elevator.

Forty-five floors.

The number appeared on the screen.

Each second felt slower.

When the doors opened, two security guards were waiting.

Not one.

Two.

Daniel Reeves stood between them.

He looked tired.

Like he had not slept either.

"Emily."

I looked at him.

"Why are there guards?"

He did not answer.

Instead, he turned toward a large glass office at the end of the hallway.

"He wants to see you."

I walked forward.

Every step felt heavier.

The office door was closed.

Daniel reached for the handle.

Then stopped.

He looked at me.

"Before you go inside..."

"What?"

His face changed.

Like he wanted to warn me.

But he was afraid to say the words.

"Whatever he tells you..."

He paused.

"Do not assume he is telling you everything."

Then he opened the door.

I stepped inside.

Adrian Blackwood was sitting behind his desk.

Alive.

Awake.

Looking nothing like the man I had fought to save hours earlier.

His eyes met mine.

And the first words he said made my blood run cold.

"Emily Carter."

He stood slowly.

"I was wondering when you would finally come back to me."

I stopped breathing.

Because Adrian Blackwood did not look confused.

May you like

He looked like he had been waiting for me.

And then he said a name I had not heard in ten years...
