Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind The Door

The folder fell from the woman's hand before she even reached the kitchen.
Papers scattered across the floor.
My name was printed on every page.
Emily Parker.
I stared at the documents.
Then I looked at the woman standing in the doorway.
She was younger than I expected.
Maybe in her late twenties.
Dark hair.
Pale face.
A long gray coat covering her clothes.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had been running from something for a very long time.
Daniel stepped forward.
"What are you doing here?"
The woman didn't look at him.
She looked at me.
And that terrified me.
Because her eyes weren't angry.
They weren't threatening.
They were filled with guilt.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
My fingers tightened around my phone.
"Who are you?"
The woman swallowed.
"My name is Rachel."
Daniel's expression changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Rachel, leave."
She ignored him.
"Emily, you need to listen to me."
Victoria stepped forward.
"You have no right to come into this house."
Rachel looked at her.
"You said the same thing three years ago."
The kitchen went silent.
Three years.
Those words felt heavy.
Like a door opening somewhere in my memory.
I looked at Daniel.
"What happened three years ago?"
He didn't answer.
That was my answer.
I slowly bent down and picked up one of the papers from the floor.
My hands were shaking.
The first page was a report.
My name was at the top.
But underneath it was something I never expected to see.
A date.
A date from before I even knew Daniel.
I looked at Rachel.
"Why do you have files about me?"
She took a deep breath.
"Because someone has been watching you for a long time."
My stomach tightened.
The baby moved.
I placed my hand over my belly.
Daniel noticed.
His face changed.
"Don't listen to her."
Rachel laughed quietly.
A sad, broken sound.
"Of course you would say that."
Daniel moved toward her.
"Get out."
But Rachel didn't move.
Instead, she reached into her bag.
I immediately stepped back.
Daniel noticed.
"Emily, don't."
But Rachel only pulled out a small envelope.
She placed it on the kitchen island.
"This is why I came."
I stared at it.
"What is that?"
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"Ask him."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Stop."
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"She deserves to know."
Victoria stepped between them.
"Daniel, we need to handle this."
I looked at her.
"We?"
That one word made her freeze.
Because she had revealed something.
She wasn't just defending her son.
She was part of whatever this was.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
My breath stopped.
It was me.
Standing outside my hospital.
I was holding a coffee cup.
Smiling.
Completely unaware.
The picture was taken from far away.
Someone had been watching.
I flipped it over.
There was writing on the back.
Three words.
"She is next."
I felt the room disappear.
"What does this mean?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
"Tell me."
He remained silent.
"Daniel."
Still nothing.
My voice became louder.
"Tell me who has been following me."
Rachel looked at him.
"You never told her."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Don't."
Rachel ignored him.
"You told her you met her by chance."
I looked between them.
"What are you talking about?"
Rachel looked at me.
"Daniel didn't find you by accident."
The words hit harder than I expected.
I felt my chest tighten.
"No."
Rachel nodded slowly.
"He knew exactly who you were."
I looked at Daniel.
The man I had shared my life with.
The man who knew my favorite food.
The man who knew how I took my coffee.
The man who held my hand when we found out we were having a baby.
And suddenly, every memory felt different.
Every moment felt like it had another meaning.
"Is that true?"
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
"How long?"
He didn't respond.
"How long did you know me before you approached me?"
Victoria stepped in.
"Emily, you're emotional."
I turned toward her.
"Stop saying that."
My voice surprised even me.
"I am not emotional. I am asking questions."
Nobody spoke.
And for the first time, nobody could make me feel guilty for asking.
Rachel walked closer.
"Daniel was not looking for a wife."
She paused.
"He was looking for someone."
I stared at her.
"Someone?"
She looked down.
"Someone connected to your father."
My entire body froze.
"My father?"
I hadn't heard that name connected to Daniel before.
My father had died when I was nineteen.
He had been a quiet man.
Private.
A person who kept notebooks everywhere.
After his death, most of his belongings disappeared.
My mother always told me not to worry about it.
But now...
Now I wondered why.
"What does my father have to do with this?"
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"He found something before he died."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Enough."
Rachel turned toward him.
"No."
For the first time, she looked angry.
"You ruined my life too."
I stared at her.
"Who are you?"
Rachel took a breath.
"I used to work with Daniel."
The room became colder.
"Where?"
She hesitated.
"At a company your father investigated."
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
"My father investigated something?"
Rachel nodded.
"He was trying to expose a group of people who were hiding money, evidence, and information."
I shook my head.
"No."
I wanted to believe this was impossible.
Because believing it meant my entire marriage was built on a lie.
Rachel opened another document.
She pushed it toward me.
"This is your father's handwriting."
I looked down.
The handwriting was familiar.
The same handwriting from birthday cards.
The same handwriting from old notes he left around the house.
My hands trembled.
At the bottom of the page was one sentence.
"Protect Emily. They will use anyone close to her."
I couldn't breathe.
Daniel suddenly moved.
Not toward me.
Toward the paper.
Rachel noticed.
"Don't."
He stopped.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly what he was about to do.
And that scared me.
"You were never supposed to find this," Rachel said.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why?"
He didn't answer.
"Why did you marry me?"
His face changed.
For a moment, I saw something almost like regret.
Then it disappeared.
"Because I needed access."
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed everything.
I stepped backward.
"No."
Daniel looked at me.
"Emily, listen."
"No."
My voice broke.
"You used me."
"I didn't plan for this."
"You planned everything."
The truth was finally standing in front of me.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
Daniel had entered my life with a purpose.
And I had given him everything.
My trust.
My home.
My child.
Rachel looked toward the window.
Her expression suddenly changed.
"What time is it?"
I frowned.
"What?"
She checked her phone.
Then her face went pale.
"We have to leave."
Daniel looked confused.
"Why?"
Rachel stared at him.
"Because they know I'm here."
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire house went dark.
My phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"Emily, don't trust the woman holding the folder."
I looked up.
Rachel was standing beside me.
Daniel was behind her.
And then another sound came from upstairs.
A slow creak.
Like someone had just opened a bedroom door.
Rachel whispered one word.
May you like
"They're already inside."
And before anyone could move, the sound of footsteps began coming down the stairs.
