Chapter 6 - The Heir They Wanted

By morning, Elena's medical records had vanished from three databases.
Adrian moved her to a secure floor beneath one of his legitimate corporate buildings.
She objected.
He listened.
Then she moved anyway—but only after Rachel confirmed the location was safer.
That distinction mattered.
Adrian was learning.
Slowly.
He no longer issued commands as if marriage gave him authority over her.
He offered options.
Elena noticed that too.
She didn't tell him.
At noon, Mercer arrived with information.
"Vittorio needs the child alive."
Adrian's face became lethal.
Elena gripped the arms of her chair.
"Why?"
"The tracking system your father built used biometric encryption."
Rachel frowned.
"Whose biometrics?"
"His bloodline."
Elena stared.
"My blood?"
"Potentially."
Mercer continued.
"Your father designed it so only a direct descendant could unlock the master archive."
Adrian understood.
"And Elena's son qualifies."
"Yes."
Elena stood.
"Then why not me?"
"Your father added a second safeguard."
Mercer looked uncomfortable.
"The archive requires two generations."
Silence.
Elena whispered, "Me and my child."
"Yes."
Adrian swore.
Vittorio hadn't waited five years because he had lost interest.
He had waited for Elena to become pregnant.
Suddenly every unexplained security threat during the pregnancy made sense.
The strange vehicle near her doctor's office.
The nurse whose identity couldn't be verified.
The attempted data breach in the sixth month.
Adrian had treated them as attacks against himself.
They were targeting Elena.
"I should have seen it," he said.
Elena looked at him.
"You aren't responsible for knowing everything."
The sentence surprised both of them.
Adrian said nothing.
Their relationship existed in ruins, but instinct still made her defend him from impossible guilt.
That frightened Elena.
Because love remained.
She didn't know whether that was strength or weakness.
Vincent entered.
"We found Dominic."
Adrian stood.
"Where?"
"Warehouse near Cicero."
Elena immediately moved toward the door.
"No."
Adrian's response came automatically.
She looked at him.
He stopped.
Then corrected himself.
"I don't think you should go."
"Better."
Vincent almost smiled.
Elena crossed her arms.
"If Dominic knows where Vittorio is, I'm going."
Adrian looked at Rachel.
Rachel shrugged.
"She's going."
Adrian sighed.
"Fine."
The warehouse was abandoned except for Dominic.
He sat tied to a chair.
Someone had beaten him badly.
He hadn't been captured by Adrian's men.
He had been left for them.
A message was taped to his chest:
FAILURE.
Dominic laughed when Elena entered.
"Family reunion."
Adrian grabbed him by the collar.
"Where is my father?"
Dominic smiled through blood.
"If I knew, do you think I'd be tied to this chair?"
Elena stepped closer.
"Why did you contact Vanessa?"
Dominic looked at her.
"Because she was weak."
Vanessa, who had insisted on coming, flinched.
Dominic continued.
"She wanted your life. I gave her a reason to resent it."
Vanessa stared at him with disgust.
"You lied to me."
"I told you facts. You chose what to do with them."
That hurt because it was true.
Elena asked, "Why warn me?"
Dominic's expression changed.
"Because Vittorio was going to take the baby."
Adrian's grip tightened.
"How?"
"Hospital."
Elena went cold.
"What?"
"He arranged staff. Records. Transport."
Her due date.
They planned to take her child at birth.
Adrian's face became terrifying.
"Names."
Dominic laughed.
"You still think you can threaten your way through this."
Adrian pulled a knife.
Elena said his name.
He stopped.
"Don't."
Adrian stared at Dominic.
Then slowly lowered the knife.
Dominic noticed.
"She's changed you."
Adrian answered without looking away.
"Yes."
Elena felt something shift inside her.
Dominic sighed.
"There's a private medical center in Evanston. Vittorio owns it through shell companies."
Vincent immediately began searching.
"Your son was supposed to be transferred there after delivery."
Elena felt nauseated.
"And me?"
Dominic didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Adrian turned away, breathing hard.
Elena touched his sleeve.
He looked at her hand.
The first voluntary contact since she had caught him with Vanessa.
Neither moved.
Then Elena released him.
"Finish this legally."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"We have evidence."
"Not enough."
"Then get enough."
"Elena—"
"I don't want our son born into a war that never ends."
That sentence changed the plan.
Instead of executing Dominic or forcing information from him, Adrian called a federal prosecutor he had quietly cooperated with on legitimate corruption cases.
For years, Adrian had balanced between two worlds.
Now Elena asked him to choose.
He did.
Dominic entered federal custody.
Mercer provided testimony.
Rachel provided documents.
Vanessa surrendered every message.
And Adrian offered financial records proving Vittorio's hidden network still operated.
It was enough to trigger raids.
Not enough to catch Vittorio.
He disappeared.
For three weeks.
During those weeks, Elena remained near Adrian.
Not exactly with him.
Near him.
They attended counseling privately.
Not because Elena had forgiven him.
Because she needed clarity before their child arrived.
Adrian answered every question.
Even the ugly ones.
"Did you want Vanessa?"
"For one moment, yes."
The answer hurt.
But she had asked for truth.
"Did you love her?"
"No."
"Do you expect me to forgive you because it was only one kiss?"
"No."
"Do you think I will?"
"I don't know."
"What will you do if I don't?"
His answer came immediately.
"Make sure you and our son are safe. Respect whatever life you choose. Hate myself privately."
Elena almost smiled.
Almost.
One evening, she asked the hardest question.
"Why did you kiss her back?"
Adrian looked down.
"Because I was angry."
"At me?"
"At everything."
He took a breath.
"I had spent months receiving threats I didn't tell you about. Vanessa arrived with proof Dominic was alive. She told me you were going to leave when you discovered the truth about your father."
"And?"
"For one second, I believed I'd already lost you."
Elena's eyes hardened.
"So you betrayed me before I could leave?"
"Yes."
At least he understood the ugliness.
"I'm not proud of it."
"You shouldn't be."
"I know."
Silence.
Then Adrian said, "I don't want forgiveness that costs you self-respect."
Elena looked at him.
That was the first thing he had said in weeks that made her believe there might someday be something left to rebuild.
Not now.
Someday.
At thirty-six weeks, Elena's doctor ordered limited activity.
At thirty-seven, everything seemed stable.
At thirty-seven weeks and four days, the estate received a package.
No return address.
Inside was Elena's wedding ring.
The one she had left on the marble table.
Except it wasn't hers.
Adrian compared it to the ring locked in his safe.
Identical.
Inside the fake ring was a tiny tracking chip.
Vincent scanned it.
Active.
Elena stared.
"Why send this?"
Adrian's face changed.
"It's not a tracker for us."
"What is it?"
"A signal."
The chip suddenly transmitted coordinates.
A location near Lake Michigan.
An abandoned private hospital.
The same medical center Dominic had described.
Adrian grabbed his coat.
Elena stood.
"No."
He looked at her.
"This time I'm saying it."
She took his hand.
"You aren't walking into a trap alone."
"Elena, you're almost thirty-eight weeks pregnant."
"And Vittorio wants me alive."
"That does not make this safer."
"We call federal agents."
"They'll take time."
"Then we wait."
Adrian stared.
This was the old argument between them.
Control versus trust.
He finally nodded.
"Okay."
They contacted the authorities.
The hospital was surrounded.
Adrian remained with Elena in an armored vehicle.
For once, he did not enter first.
Agents breached the building.
No Vittorio.
Only computers.
Medical records.
Plans.
Photographs of Elena taken throughout her pregnancy.
Then an agent found something else.
A live video feed.
Elena appeared on the screen.
Not the Elena sitting beside Adrian.
A prerecorded image of her doctor's examination room.
Vittorio's voice played over the speakers.
"Congratulations, Adrian."
Adrian looked up.
"You finally learned patience."
The monitor changed.
A second camera feed appeared.
This one was live.
It showed Elena's obstetrician entering her home.
Tied to a chair.
Behind her stood Vittorio.
May you like
He smiled into the camera.
"Now bring me my grandson."
