Chapter 5 - The Husband Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Lena forgot how to breathe.

Ryan looked older.

Thinner.

A scar crossed his left temple.

But he was Ryan.

Same brown eyes.

Same crooked left eyebrow.

Same small notch in his chin Sophie had inherited.

"No," Lena whispered.

Ryan took one step toward her.

Dominic moved between them.

Lena shoved him aside.

"Don't."

"Lena—"

"Don't touch me."

She looked at Ryan.

"You're dead."

His face twisted.

"I know what you were told."

"I buried you."

"No."

"I had a funeral."

"The body wasn't mine."

Lena shook her head.

"I saw your wedding ring."

"They planted it."

"Who?"

Ryan looked toward Victor.

Victor smiled.

Lena's grief transformed into something else.

Six years.

Six years of raising Sophie alone.

Six years of telling a child her father loved her but couldn't come home.

Six years of birthdays with an empty chair.

Six years of medical appointments.

Six years of choosing between prescriptions and electricity bills.

"You let me think you were dead."

Ryan's eyes filled.

"I was trying to protect you."

Lena crossed the room and slapped him.

The sound echoed.

Nobody moved.

"You don't get to say that."

"I know."

"Sophie cried for you every night for a year."

"I know."

"You know?"

"I watched from a distance."

That hurt worse.

"You watched?"

"I couldn't come back."

"Why?"

Ryan looked at Dominic.

"Because of his father."

Dominic's expression changed.

Victor seemed delighted.

"Now we're finally getting somewhere."

Dominic looked at Ryan.

"You worked for my father?"

Ryan nodded.

"Vale Shipping."

"Doing what?"

"Financial systems."

Lena stared at her supposedly dead husband.

"You told me you managed freight accounts."

"I did."

"What else?"

Ryan looked ashamed.

"I found payments connected to trafficking routes."

Dominic went still.

Those same routes he'd shut down after taking control.

Ryan continued.

"I copied everything. Names. Companies. Police. Judges. Port officials."

Victor interrupted.

"And then he made the foolish mistake of believing evidence mattered."

"You tried to expose them?" Lena asked.

Ryan nodded.

"Dominic's father found out."

"And the accident?"

"Staged."

Lena's legs weakened.

Ryan stepped toward her.

She backed away.

"No."

He stopped.

"Where have you been?"

"Different countries. Safe houses."

"With Victor?"

Ryan looked at him.

"Not willingly."

Victor sighed.

"Everyone always insists on making me sound so dramatic."

Dominic's voice became low.

"You kept him alive because he had copies."

"Very good."

"The records my father couldn't find."

"Exactly."

Lena looked at Ryan.

"And Sophie?"

His face collapsed.

"I knew about her heart."

"You knew?"

"I arranged money anonymously."

Lena laughed bitterly.

"Anonymous money? I worked double shifts."

"I sent more."

"Then someone intercepted it."

Ryan looked at Victor.

"Yes."

Victor shrugged.

"Sentiment is expensive."

Lena wanted to attack him.

Dominic's hand caught her wrist.

"Not yet."

Victor looked amused.

"You two make an interesting pair."

"We aren't a pair," Lena snapped.

"Of course."

Victor gestured toward the transplant case.

"Shall we return to the reason we're here?"

Lena looked at it.

"Ryan told me not to let Dominic open it."

Ryan nodded urgently.

"Because it's not Sophie's donor heart."

Silence.

Lena's face went numb.

"What?"

"The actual heart is still at St. Catherine."

Dominic stared at Victor.

"A decoy."

Victor smiled.

"The redirect was digital theater."

Lena grabbed Ryan's arm.

"Then Sophie can have surgery?"

"If Dr. Reese regains control of the allocation."

Dominic understood first.

"You didn't steal the heart. You stole access."

Victor nodded.

"Much cleaner."

Ryan said, "The case contains a server drive. Victor used it to route forged transplant records."

Dominic looked at the medical container.

"And evidence."

"Enough to connect him to multiple hospital fraud schemes."

Victor's smile disappeared.

There it was.

The real reason.

Not a heart.

A digital ledger.

Dominic stepped toward the case.

Victor's armed men raised their weapons.

"Careful," Victor said.

"Kill me and you lose the organization."

"I've already started replacing you."

"With whom?"

Victor glanced at Ryan.

Dominic laughed once.

"Ryan?"

Lena looked at her husband.

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

Victor continued.

"Not willingly, perhaps. But a man with his access and a wife and daughter to threaten becomes surprisingly cooperative."

Lena realized the trap.

Victor had kept Ryan alive for six years because Ryan was useful.

He had dragged Sophie into this because she was useful too.

People weren't people to him.

They were pressure points.

Dominic said, "Your mistake is thinking everyone can be bought by fear."

Victor smiled.

"Your father believed that."

"My father was wrong."

"Your father ruled for thirty years."

"And died surrounded by people waiting to betray him."

That landed.

Victor's jaw tightened.

Dominic looked toward Ryan.

"Can the records be restored?"

"Yes."

"Can you reverse Sophie's hold?"

"If I get access to the original system."

Gabriel asked, "How long?"

"Ten minutes."

Lena looked at Victor.

"You brought the one person who can undo what you did."

Victor's expression didn't change.

"I brought the one person who knows exactly how painful losing family can be."

A gunshot exploded.

Lena screamed.

One of Victor's men fell.

Gabriel had fired first.

Everything erupted.

Dominic pulled Lena behind a steel cabinet.

More shots.

Ryan dove toward the transplant case.

Victor shouted something.

Alarms began blaring.

Dominic leaned out and fired twice.

Lena covered her ears.

She hated every second.

The violence.

The smell.

The terror.

This was Dominic's world.

And she wanted Sophie nowhere near it.

Then Ryan crawled behind them, dragging the case.

"I have it."

Gabriel shouted, "Police are two minutes out!"

Victor retreated toward the rear corridor with one remaining guard.

Dominic started after him.

Lena grabbed his coat.

"No."

"He'll escape."

"I don't care."

"You will."

"Why?"

"Because he'll come for Sophie again."

That stopped her.

Dominic gently removed her hand.

"Stay with Ryan."

He disappeared down the corridor.

Ryan looked at Lena.

She stared at him.

There were a thousand questions.

None could be answered while their daughter was running out of time.

"Can you fix it?"

Ryan touched the server drive inside the case.

"Yes."

"Then fix our daughter's heart first."

They connected the device to a laptop in an administrative office.

Ryan worked.

Gabriel guarded the door.

Lena called Dr. Reese.

"We have proof the hold is fraudulent."

"Send everything."

"Ryan is restoring the records."

Reese paused.

"Ryan?"

Lena closed her eyes.

"Later."

Five minutes.

Six.

Seven.

Ryan's hands flew over the keyboard.

"I need another credential."

"Whose?" Gabriel asked.

"Victor's."

Lena's stomach sank.

"Dominic went after him."

Gabriel reached for his phone.

No response.

Again.

Nothing.

Ryan said, "Without Victor's credential, I can restore Sophie's status but not remove the redirect authority."

"Meaning?"

"He can block it again."

"Then restore it now."

Ryan did.

Dr. Reese called seconds later.

"She's active."

Lena nearly collapsed.

"The heart?"

"Still allocated to Sophie."

"Then operate."

"We're preparing now."

"Do it."

"Lena, you need to get back."

"I am."

She looked at Ryan.

"We are."

Ryan froze.

The word meant more than she intended.

Not forgiveness.

Not reunion.

Simply that Sophie deserved to see her father alive.

They left the building as police arrived.

Dominic still hadn't returned.

Gabriel wanted to stay.

Lena wanted to go to Sophie.

It tore at her in a way she didn't understand.

She'd known Dominic less than five hours.

Yet leaving him behind felt like leaving someone in the alley all over again.

Gabriel saw it.

"I'll find him."

"Promise?"

"Yes."

Ryan watched her.

"You care about him."

Lena turned sharply.

"He saved Sophie's transplant."

"You saved his life."

"That's all."

Ryan didn't argue.

At St. Catherine, everything moved quickly.

Sophie was being prepared for surgery.

Lena walked into pre-op with Ryan behind her.

Sophie saw him.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

"Dad?"

Ryan broke.

Completely.

He dropped to his knees beside the bed.

"Hi, bug."

That had been his nickname for her.

Sophie touched his face.

"You're dead."

Ryan sobbed.

"I know."

"That's stupid."

Lena laughed and cried at the same time.

"Very stupid," she said.

Sophie looked at her mother.

"Did you know?"

"No."

Ryan kissed Sophie's hand.

"I'm sorry."

"Where were you?"

"I'll tell you everything when you wake up."

Sophie frowned.

"You better."

"I promise."

Then she looked around.

"Where's the blood guy?"

Lena's smile disappeared.

"He's helping."

"Tell him I said thank you."

"I will."

The surgical team arrived.

Lena kissed Sophie's forehead.

Ryan did the same.

They watched the doors close.

Then began the longest hours of Lena's life.

Ryan sat ten feet away.

They barely spoke.

At 9:17 a.m., Gabriel arrived.

Alone.

Lena stood.

"Where is he?"

Gabriel's expression told her something was wrong.

"We found Victor's car."

"And Dominic?"

"No."

"Blood?"

"Yes."

Lena's chest tightened.

"Whose?"

"We don't know."

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Lena answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then she heard Dominic breathing.

"Dominic?"

"Lena."

Relief hit so hard she had to sit.

"Where are you?"

"Listen carefully."

His voice sounded weak.

"Are you hurt?"

"Yes."

"Tell me where you are."

"Victor has me."

Lena stood again.

Ryan and Gabriel both turned.

Dominic continued.

"Do not come."

Her heart pounded.

"What does he want?"

"Ryan's evidence."

Victor's voice appeared faintly in the background.

Dominic spoke faster.

"Sophie first. Surgery first. Nothing matters before that."

Then Lena heard Victor say something.

Dominic cursed.

A sharp impact followed.

"Dominic!"

His voice returned.

Barely.

"Lena, there's something you need to know about Ryan."

She looked at her husband.

Ryan went pale.

Dominic whispered, "He didn't disappear because my father forced him to."

Lena stopped breathing.

"What are you saying?"

The line crackled.

Then Dominic said:

"Ryan chose to work for Victor."

May you like

The call ended.

And Lena slowly turned toward the husband she had mourned for six years.
