Chapter 5 - The Name on the Security List

My father stepped out of the darkness.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray threaded through his hair.
But alive.
For fourteen years, I'd imagined meeting him again.
Sometimes I screamed.
Sometimes I slapped him.
Sometimes I walked past without acknowledging him.
In none of those fantasies did I simply stand there unable to breathe.
"Elena."
His voice was older too.
I hated that I remembered it.
My mother stumbled backward.
"No."
Nathaniel looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
She slapped him.
Hard.
Nobody stopped her.
I almost admired Damian for looking away.
My father accepted it.
"I deserved that."
"You deserved fourteen years of that."
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Her voice broke.
"You don't know what she went through."
She pointed at me.
"She thought you abandoned her."
Nathaniel looked at me.
"I know."
"No."
My voice finally worked.
"You don't get to say that."
His eyes closed briefly.
"You're right."
"Why are you alive?"
The question sounded absurd.
But it was the only one that mattered.
"Because disappearing was the only way I could keep you hidden."
"From whom?"
"Vale."
Damian spoke.
"Full name."
"Sebastian Vale."
Cole swore quietly.
Damian looked at him.
"You know it?"
"Vale Consulting handled security audits for three Vescari companies."
Nathaniel nodded.
"That's how he stayed close."
My father explained.
Twenty-eight years earlier, he'd uncovered financial records connecting Vale to a network exploiting legitimate shipping systems for illegal operations.
Nathaniel had tried to expose him.
Vale retaliated.
Damian's father helped Nathaniel hide Rebecca and infant Elena.
Years later, Nathaniel returned secretly, believing the danger had passed.
He was wrong.
When I was fourteen, Vale found him.
Nathaniel staged his disappearance and spent years collecting evidence.
"You could have called."
"Every person I contacted became a target."
"You contacted Mom."
"Once."
My mother stared.
"When?"
"Seven years ago."
Her expression changed.
She knew.
Another secret.
I almost laughed.
"Of course."
"Elena—"
"Later."
I turned to Nathaniel.
"Why tonight?"
"Because Vale learned about the archive."
"What archive?"
He pointed toward the passage.
"Everything."
Damian stepped forward.
"If you've had evidence for years, why not give it to authorities?"
"I did."
"What happened?"
"Someone warned Vale."
That silenced the room.
Corruption.
Not a single villain.
A network.
Nathaniel looked at me.
"I needed one person outside all of it."
"Me?"
"No."
He looked at Damian.
"His father."
Damian's face hardened.
"He's dead."
"I know."
"Then your plan failed."
"Not completely."
Nathaniel handed him the key from the metal box.
"Your father built a private archive."
"Where?"
"He never told me."
"Then how does this help?"
Nathaniel looked at the key.
"Because it isn't a door key."
Damian examined it.
I saw recognition.
"What?"
He turned it over.
A tiny V had been engraved into the metal.
"My father's desk."
We moved to the far side of the library.
Damian found an antique writing desk blackened by smoke.
The key fit a narrow slot beneath the center drawer.
Click.
A false bottom released.
Inside was a ledger.
Damian opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Companies.
Then one page stopped him.
"What?"
He turned the book toward us.
A list of Blackwood security personnel.
Marco's name.
Cole's name.
Others.
Beside each was a status.
CLEARED.
CLEARED.
COMPROMISED.
Then Damian reached the final line.
He stopped.
I saw the name.
COLE MERCER.
COMPROMISED.
Nobody spoke.
Slowly, we looked up.
Cole wasn't beside us anymore.

The library door was open.
And my mother was gone.
