Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside His Own House

At 1:14 a.m., Lorenzo Moretti entered his office carrying no visible weapon.
Penelope noticed because she had begun noticing the same things everyone else did.
Where his hands were.
Who stood behind him.
Which doors Marco checked twice.
Which men stopped talking when Lorenzo entered a room.
The Moretti Holdings headquarters looked different at night.
Empty.
Sharper.
More dangerous.
Penelope had insisted on coming.
Lorenzo had refused.
She came anyway.
“If Cross used my computer to get Halcyon,” she had told him, “I may know what else he accessed.”
That ended the argument.
Now they stood inside the executive floor.
The lights were dim.
Cross’s office door was open.
His chair was pushed back.
A glass of bourbon sat half-finished on the desk.
No Cross.
No companion.
Marco entered from the corridor.
“Security searched the floor.”
“Nothing?”
“No.”
“How did he leave?”
“He didn’t.”
Penelope looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“The cameras show him arriving with another man. Neither appears on any exit feed.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
“There are service stairs.”
“Covered.”
“Garage?”
“Covered.”
Penelope walked to Cross’s desk.
“He wanted you to know he was here.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“What?”
“He left the drink.”
“So?”
“Daniel doesn’t drink bourbon.”
Marco frowned.
Penelope pointed.
“He drinks gin. Always. Office parties, dinners, flights. I booked his travel for six months when his assistant was on maternity leave.”
Lorenzo approached the glass.
“So someone placed this deliberately.”
“Yes.”
Marco lifted it carefully.
Underneath was a small white card.
One word had been printed on it.
BASEMENT.
Lorenzo’s eyes darkened.
“This building doesn’t have a basement,” Penelope said.
“It does.”
She looked at him.
“Of course it does.”
He walked toward the private elevator.
“The original building had two underground levels before the tower renovation. Most of the space was sealed.”
“Most?”
“One corridor connects to utility access.”
Penelope folded her arms.
“And you never thought that might be relevant information for your executive coordinator?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because normal employees don’t need to know about hidden underground corridors.”
“Today has established I’m apparently not normal.”
He looked at her.
“No. You’re not.”
They descended.
The elevator stopped below parking level three.
The doors opened onto concrete.
No marble.
No glass.
No corporate logos.
Just old pipes, exposed wiring, and a long corridor disappearing into shadow.
Penelope whispered, “This looks like where sensible people turn around.”
Lorenzo almost smiled.
Marco and two security men moved ahead.
They reached a locked metal door.
It stood open.
Inside was an abandoned records room.
Shelves.
Boxes.
Old office furniture.
And Daniel Cross.
He sat in a chair.
Hands tied.
Mouth bleeding.
Penelope gasped.
“Daniel.”
He raised his head.
“Lorenzo.”
Marco rushed forward.
“Clear.”
They untied him.
Lorenzo crouched.
“Who did this?”
Cross coughed.
“Rusk.”
“You met him at the hospital.”
Cross looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He contacted me months ago.”
Lorenzo’s voice became dangerous.
“Why?”
“My daughter.”
Penelope stopped.
Cross looked at her.
“She was arrested in Miami last year. Drugs. Vale had connections. He made it disappear.”
“And in return?” Lorenzo asked.
“Information.”
“What information?”
“At first, harmless things. Meeting schedules. Contract bids.”
Lorenzo stood.
“You gave him access to my company.”
“I thought I could control it.”
“You thought wrong.”
“I know.”
“Halcyon?”
Cross shook his head.
“I didn’t know Owen had copied it until Rusk told me.”
Penelope stepped closer.
“Then why were you at the hospital?”
“To warn him.”
“Warn Owen?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Cross looked at Lorenzo.
“Because Vale planned to use him again.”
Penelope’s stomach turned.
“For what?”
“To get to her.”
Cross nodded toward Penelope.
Lorenzo went still.
“Explain.”
“Vale knew she worked for you. He knew you trusted her. Once Owen had debt, they realized Penelope was leverage.”
Penelope felt sick.
“They didn’t find my brother because of Lorenzo.”
Cross shook his head.
“No.”
“They found Lorenzo because of my brother.”
“Yes.”
The truth hit differently.
For weeks she had resented Lorenzo’s intervention.
His power.
His surveillance.
His dangerous world.
But Owen had already been inside another dangerous world long before Lorenzo followed her.
“Why the threats now?” she asked.
Cross looked exhausted.
“Because Vale believes Lorenzo will destroy him if Halcyon becomes public.”
“He’s right,” Lorenzo said.
Cross looked at him.
“He also thinks Penelope is your weakness.”
No one spoke.
Penelope slowly looked at Lorenzo.
He gave nothing away.
Cross continued.
“The restaurant wasn’t an accident.”
Penelope’s throat tightened.
“What?”
“The woman who humiliated you.”
“Caroline?”
“She was encouraged.”
“By whom?”
“Vale.”
Penelope stared.
“He wanted Lorenzo angry. Public. Emotional.”
“Why?”
“To confirm whether he cared about you.”
The memory came back.
Caroline mocking her.
Lorenzo entering.
The ring.
Future wife.
Penelope closed her eyes.
“He confirmed it.”
Cross nodded.
“Yes.”
Lorenzo’s face became unreadable.
Marco cursed quietly.
“What does Vale want?” Penelope asked.
“Halcyon erased.”
“Does he think Lorenzo would erase it for me?”
Cross looked at her.
“He thinks Lorenzo would burn Chicago for you.”
Penelope’s heart beat hard.
She did not look at Lorenzo.
“Would he?”
Cross said nothing.
Neither did Marco.
Penelope finally turned.
Lorenzo met her eyes.
“I would not burn Chicago.”
A strange relief passed through her.
Then he added, “Only the parts of it that deserved burning.”
She stared.
“That was almost reassuring.”
Cross groaned.
They helped him to his feet.
Lorenzo looked at Marco.
“Hospital?”
Marco nodded.
Cross grabbed Lorenzo’s sleeve.
“There’s more.”
Everyone stopped.
“Vale contacted me tonight.”
“What did he say?”
“He has another copy of Halcyon.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“And?”
“He plans to release selected pages.”
“To whom?”
“Federal investigators.”
Penelope was confused.
“Why would that hurt Lorenzo if the records expose Vale?”
Cross looked at her.
“Because the file doesn’t only show Vale’s payments.”
He turned to Lorenzo.
“It shows yours.”
Silence.
Penelope’s face changed.
“What payments?”
Lorenzo did not answer.
“Lorenzo.”
Cross looked away.
Penelope stepped toward him.
“What payments?”
Lorenzo’s voice was quiet.
“Money I paid to officials.”
Her stomach dropped.
“Bribes?”
“No.”
“What else do you call money paid to officials?”
“Protection.”
“For what?”
“For witnesses.”
She stopped.
Lorenzo continued.
“When Vale’s accountant came to me, he gave me names of others willing to testify. Some had families. Some needed relocation. Some needed police details changed. People inside the system helped me.”
“You paid them.”
“Yes.”
“Illegally.”
“Yes.”
Penelope stared.
“If those records become public?”
“I could be charged.”
“With what?”
“Bribery. Obstruction. Conspiracy.”
“How long?”
“Potentially years.”
Her chest tightened.
“So Vale can destroy you.”
“He can try.”
Cross shook his head.
“That’s not his plan.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“What is?”
“He doesn’t want you in prison.”
“Why not?”
“He wants something worse.”
A phone rang.
Not Lorenzo’s.
Not Marco’s.
Penelope looked down.
Her phone.
Unknown number.
The screen displayed a video call.
Everyone froze.
Lorenzo said, “Don’t answer.”
The call stopped.
Then a text appeared.
ANSWER THE NEXT ONE OR OWEN LOSES HIS PLACE IN THE TRIAL.
Penelope went cold.
“How would he control that?”
Cross whispered, “Vale has people everywhere.”
The phone rang again.
Lorenzo reached for it.
Penelope pulled away.
“No.”
“Penelope.”
“It’s my brother.”
She answered.
The screen remained black.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Ms. Gallagher.”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You’ve become very important very quickly.”
Lorenzo motioned for Marco to trace the call.
The voice continued.
“Tell Lorenzo I want Halcyon.”
Penelope looked at him.
“He can hear you.”
A pause.
Then a laugh.
“Of course he can.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Vale.”
The voice became clearer.
Adrian Vale himself.
“Moretti.”
“What do you want?”
“I just told your girlfriend.”
“She’s not part of this.”
“You made her part of it when you proposed in front of half of Chicago.”
Penelope closed her eyes.
“That was not—”
Vale laughed.
“Oh, this is better than I expected.”
Lorenzo’s voice dropped.
“Touch Owen and I will end you.”
“Still dramatic.”
“What do you want?”
“Midnight tomorrow.”
“Where?”
“I’ll tell you.”
“And if I refuse?”
Vale was silent for a moment.
Then he said, “Ask Penelope to check her email.”
The call ended.
Penelope immediately opened her inbox.
A new message waited.
No subject.
One attachment.
She opened it.
A hospital enrollment form.
Owen’s trial.
Across the top was a red stamp.
CANCELLED.
Penelope stopped breathing.
Then another email appeared.
This one came from Dr. Shah.
She opened it.
Her hand began to shake.
Lorenzo moved beside her.
“What?”
May you like
Penelope looked up.
“The trial coordinator just withdrew Owen’s approval.”
