Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Wouldn't Be Owned

The man outside wasn't Michael.
He was older.
Thinner.
But the coat had belonged to Chloe's father.
She knew the repaired seam on the shoulder.
Dominic opened the door only after Paulie checked the hallway.
The stranger raised both hands.
"My name is Henry Vale."
Chloe stared at the coat.
"Where did you get that?"
"Michael gave it to me."
"My father is dead."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
Henry looked at Dominic.
"Because Varga knows the boy has the box."
Sam moved behind Chloe.
Dominic's voice dropped.
"Come inside."
Henry had worked with Michael twenty years earlier.
Not gambling.
Accounting.
Michael had been a bookkeeper for several businesses, including companies connected to Dante Rossi and Varga.
"He discovered money disappearing," Henry said.
"How much?" Dominic asked.
"Millions."
"From my father?"
"From everyone."
Henry looked at Chloe.
"Your father kept records."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
Chloe laughed bitterly.
"My father couldn't insure a toaster without missing a payment."
"He wasn't always the man you remember."
That hurt more than she expected.
Henry explained that Michael had tried to disappear from that world after Chloe's mother died.
He drank.
Then gambled.
Then lost control of everything.
But he'd kept one thing.
Proof.
"What's in the box?" Chloe asked.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
Henry smiled sadly.
"You really are Michael's daughter."
Dominic took the wooden box.
The lock was old.
Paulie opened it with a small tool.
Inside was a key.
A photograph.
And a folded restaurant napkin.
Dominic unfolded it.
The napkin carried the old Laura logo.
Before Dominic owned the restaurant.
Before he had renovated it.
On the back, Michael had written:
THE TRUTH IS WHERE DANTE FED EVERYONE.
Dominic stared.
"My father owned Laura."
Chloe looked around.
"Then whatever Dad hid—"
"Could still be there."
They went after closing.
Elena stayed.
So did Paulie.
Henry led them into the basement.
The old wine cellar had been rebuilt twice, but one brick wall was original.
Dominic found scratches near the floor.
They moved a cabinet.
Behind it was a small steel door.
The key fit.
Inside were ledgers.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Names.
Decades of secrets.
Chloe's hands trembled.
"This is what they wanted."
Dominic opened the first ledger.
Varga's name appeared repeatedly.
So did Dante Rossi's.
Chloe watched Dominic.
"Your father was involved."
"Maybe."
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Protect him because he's dead."
Dominic looked at her.
"I'm not."
And she believed him.
That frightened her in a different way.
For three months, she had tried to decide what Dominic Rossi was.
Dangerous?
Yes.
Controlling?
Sometimes.
Cold?
Often.
But he'd never lied to Sam.
Never touched Chloe without permission.
Never demanded gratitude.
Never used the debt against her.
And now he was staring at evidence that could destroy his father's reputation without trying to hide it.
They worked until dawn.
The truth emerged slowly.
Dante and Michael had discovered that Varga was laundering money through businesses belonging to other people.
Dante intended to expose him.
Then Dante died in what everyone believed was a heart attack.
Michael panicked.
He hid the evidence.
Years later, Varga discovered Michael still possessed something.
So he used Michael's gambling problem.
He buried him in manipulated debts.
After Michael died, Varga targeted Chloe.
The forty thousand dollars wasn't about repayment.
It was bait.
He wanted access to Michael's belongings.
Chloe sat on the basement floor.
"My father knew."
Dominic crouched across from her.
"He tried to protect you."
"He also destroyed our childhood."
"Both can be true."
She looked at him.
"You always have an answer?"
"No."
"What don't you have an answer for?"
His eyes remained on hers.
"You."
The air changed.
Chloe looked away first.
"That's a terrible line."
"It wasn't a line."
"That makes it worse."
Dominic stood.
For the first time in years, he looked almost uncomfortable.
Chloe smiled despite herself.
Then Paulie came downstairs.
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"Someone accessed the restaurant's security system."
Dominic immediately reached for the ledgers.
"From where?"
"Inside."
Everyone froze.
Elena appeared at the stairs.
"Dominic?"
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the basement.
Sam was upstairs.
Chloe stood so fast she knocked over a chair.
"Sam!"
Dominic caught her arm.
"Wait."
"My brother is upstairs!"
"I'm going."
"I'm coming."
"No."
"Dominic—"
A crash sounded above them.
Chloe tore free.
They ran upstairs.
The dining room was empty.
One chair had fallen.
The front door stood open.
Rain blew inside.
"Sam!"
No answer.
Chloe's panic exploded.
Then a small voice came from beneath the hostess station.
"I'm here."
She dropped to her knees.
Sam crawled out.
Chloe pulled him against her.
"What happened?"
"A man came in."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"What did he want?"
Sam held out his hand.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
"He told me to give this to Dominic."
Dominic opened it.
There were only seven words.
BRING THE LEDGER OR HENRY DIES TONIGHT.
Everyone turned.
Henry was no longer in the basement.
May you like
The rear service door was open.
And on the wet floor beyond it lay his broken glasses...
