Chapter 5 - Noon at the Baldi Grand

At eleven fifty-eight the next morning, Claire Bennett walked into the Baldi Grand carrying a black leather bag.

Alone.

At least that was what Vanessa was supposed to believe.

Claire wore no housekeeping uniform.

For the first time in eleven years, she entered the hotel as a guest.

Black slacks.

Navy blouse.

Hair loose.

No name tag.

No cart.

No apologizing for taking up space.

The front-desk employees stared.

Maria almost cried when she saw her.

Claire gave the smallest shake of her head.

Do not react.

Maria understood.

Claire crossed the lobby.

The same marble.

The same chandelier.

Twenty-four hours earlier, security had been dragging her toward the door.

Now two guards stepped aside.

The elevator doors opened.

Claire entered.

A tiny microphone was hidden beneath her collar.

Dante’s voice came through the earpiece.

“You can still stop.”

“No.”

“You do not owe Marco this.”

“I owe Lily.”

“Claire.”

She pressed the penthouse button.

“What?”

A pause.

“If anything feels wrong, leave.”

“You’re downstairs.”

“Yes.”

“So why do you sound nervous?”

“I’m not.”

“You’re terrible at lying.”

Dante said nothing.

Claire almost smiled.

Then the elevator stopped.

Penthouse.

The doors opened.

Vanessa was waiting.

White dress.

Perfect hair.

No security.

“Claire.”

“Vanessa.”

“Give me your phone.”

Claire handed over a decoy.

Vanessa placed it inside a metal box.

“You came.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“I warned you.”

“You fired me because of a necklace.”

“I fired you because you should have disappeared seven years ago.”

Claire’s pulse hammered.

Dante heard every word.

“Did your father tell you that?”

Vanessa led her toward the sitting room.

“Sit.”

Claire remained standing.

“No.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You became brave overnight.”

“No. I got tired.”

“Of what?”

“People thinking being cruel makes them powerful.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“Where are the files?”

Claire lifted the bag.

“Here.”

Vanessa reached.

Claire pulled it back.

“First you tell me what happened to Marco.”

“You already know.”

“I heard a recording.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.

Claire saw it.

“You were there.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“My father made mistakes.”

“You watched him kill Marco.”

“I watched Marco destroy himself.”

Claire’s hands shook.

“He was trying to expose murder.”

“He was trying to expose everyone.”

“Including your father.”

“And Salvatore Moretti.”

Claire studied her.

“You think that excuses it.”

“I think you have no idea how the world works.”

Claire almost laughed.

“I cleaned your toilets for eleven years. I know exactly how the world works.”

Vanessa’s expression twisted.

“You should have stayed invisible.”

“That was the plan, wasn’t it?”

Vanessa stared.

Claire continued.

“Keep me working. Keep someone watching. As long as I never found what Marco left me, I wasn’t a problem.”

Vanessa slowly smiled.

“You’re smarter than you look.”

Claire’s eyes went cold.

“And you’re exactly as shallow as you look.”

Dante’s voice came quietly through the earpiece.

“That was unnecessary.”

Claire almost smiled.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“My father knew Marco had given you something.”

“The necklace.”

“He thought so.”

“But you never searched it.”

“Marco hid things.”

“You were afraid Dante would see it.”

“Yes.”

“Which is why you fired me the moment Lily wore it in the hotel.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You should be grateful.”

“For what?”

“I could have handled it differently.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Is that how you justify threatening a child?”

“I didn’t threaten Lily.”

“You sent the message.”

“No.”

Claire froze.

Dante’s voice whispered.

“Claire.”

Vanessa looked genuinely confused.

“What message?”

“The photograph at her school.”

“I sent you nothing.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Dante said, “Get out.”

Claire moved toward the door.

Vanessa blocked her.

“The files.”

Claire stared.

“Move.”

Vanessa grabbed the bag.

Claire pulled back.

The zipper tore.

Paper scattered across the floor.

Blank paper.

Vanessa stared.

“You brought nothing.”

“No.”

Vanessa slapped Claire.

The sound cracked through the room.

Dante’s voice became ice.

“I’m coming up.”

Claire whispered, “No.”

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

“You think he can protect you?”

Claire pulled free.

“I think you’re terrified of him.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You should be more afraid of the person who killed Marco.”

Claire froze.

“Your father?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“My father ordered it.”

Claire’s heartbeat pounded.

“But he didn’t pull the trigger.”

“Evan.”

Vanessa looked almost amused.

“Evan fired one shot.”

Claire stared.

“One?”

The recording had contained two sounds she had assumed were part of the struggle.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“There were two shooters.”

Dante’s voice went silent.

Claire whispered, “Who was the other?”

Vanessa looked toward the elevator.

The doors opened.

Salvatore Moretti walked out.

Claire’s blood froze.

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask him.”

Salvatore entered slowly.

Dante’s voice exploded through Claire’s earpiece.

“GET OUT.”

Claire backed away.

Salvatore looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa laughed.

“I finally got tired of old men controlling the story.”

Claire stared at Salvatore.

“Were you there?”

“No.”

Vanessa clapped slowly.

“Technically true.”

Salvatore’s face hardened.

“Be careful.”

“You don’t scare me anymore.”

“What does she mean?” Claire demanded.

Salvatore looked at her.

“Marco called me that night.”

Claire stopped.

“Before he died?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He wanted me to come.”

“And?”

“I refused.”

Claire stared.

Salvatore’s eyes lowered.

“He told me Victor was going to kill him.”

Claire felt sick.

“And you did nothing.”

“I believed Victor would frighten him.”

“You knew.”

“I did not know they would murder him.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

The admission was worse.

Salvatore had not pulled a trigger.

He had simply decided his son’s fear was inconvenient.

Claire understood why Marco had tried to escape.

Vanessa’s phone buzzed.

She checked it.

Her face changed.

Then she smiled.

“Finally.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

Vanessa turned the screen.

A live video.

Rosa’s house.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table.

Claire’s heart stopped.

A man stood behind her.

Evan Mercer.

Alive.

He held Lily’s necklace.

Claire screamed her daughter’s name.

Dante’s voice came through the earpiece.

“Claire, listen to me.”

Evan spoke through Vanessa’s phone.

“Bring the chip.”

Claire looked at Vanessa.

She seemed equally surprised.

“You’re working with him.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Evan smiled through the screen.

“Vanessa never understood the arrangement.”

Her face went pale.

“What arrangement?”

Evan continued.

“Victor didn’t own me.”

Salvatore stared.

“Who did?”

Evan looked directly into the camera.

“You did.”

Salvatore’s face drained.

Dante said, “What?”

Evan laughed.

“Not knowingly.”

He lifted another document.

A signed authorization.

Dante recognized it.

His own signature.

Claire looked toward the elevator.

Dante was coming.

Evan spoke again.

“Seven years ago, Dante Moretti approved the security operation that put me beside Marco.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Vanessa smiled.

Salvatore stared.

And then the penthouse elevator doors opened.

May you like

Dante stepped out.

He had heard everything.
