Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Second Gate

Nobody believed it.
Isabella least of all.
“Mrs. Bell saved Luca.”
Enzo laughed.
“Did she?”
Dante ignored him.
“Marco, chapel.”
Marco moved.
Dante turned toward Cecilia.
“Get Sophie and Luca to the vault.”
Enzo lifted the remote.
“You leave this room, the east wing comes down.”
Dante looked at him.
“Then press it.”
Even Enzo seemed surprised.
Dante continued.
“You haven’t spent twenty years hiding so you could die tonight.”
Silence.
“You need the ledger more than I need this house.”
Enzo’s hand tightened.
Dante smiled without warmth.
“So stop pretending.”
Enzo lowered the remote.
Dante walked out.
Isabella followed.
“You stay with Luca.”
“No.”
“Isabella.”
“My father built this trail.”
“And my job is keeping you alive long enough to finish it.”
“Then keep up.”
They ran toward the chapel.
The doors were open.
Inside, candles burned.
The glass case where Luca’s baptism blanket had been stored was empty.
Mrs. Bell stood near the altar.
She held the folded cream blanket.
Marco aimed his gun.
“Put it down.”
Mrs. Bell looked exhausted.
“I was trying to save it.”
“From who?”
“Father Sebastian.”
Everyone turned.
The priest stood near the side door.
His face fell.
“No.”
Mrs. Bell pointed.
“He took it from the case.”
Father Sebastian shook his head.
“I moved it because Enzo knew.”
“Then why didn’t you tell Dante?”
“Because Enzo has my brother.”
Dante lowered Marco’s weapon slightly.
“How many people does he own?”
Father Sebastian looked ashamed.
“Too many.”
Mrs. Bell handed the blanket to Isabella.
“Find it.”
Isabella spread the cloth across the altar.
Cream silk.
Fine embroidery.
Luca Moretti.
A date.
A tiny crest.
Nothing else.
Dante ran his fingers beneath the border.
“Here.”
A section felt thicker.
Marco produced a small knife.
Isabella stopped him.
“I’ll do it.”
She opened one seam carefully.
Inside was not paper.
It was a microSD card.
Dante stared.
“That’s the ledger?”
“Maybe.”
Marco took out an encrypted tablet.
He inserted the card.
Password required.
Isabella closed her eyes.
Her father loved simple passwords disguised as memories.
“What was the lullaby code?”
“352.”
“No.”
She remembered childhood.
Three taps.
Five taps.
Two taps.
Whenever her father came home.
Their private knock.
She typed 352BELLA.
Denied.
She tried THOMAS352.
Denied.
One attempt remaining.
“Stop,” Dante said.
“If it wipes—”
“It won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“My father hated complicated technology.”
“That is not reassuring.”
Isabella looked at Luca’s stitched birth date.
Then the three letters she had seen on the hospital bracelet.
D.M.
Dante Moretti.
But perhaps not.
She looked at Dante.
“What was your father’s full name?”
“Domenico Vittorio Moretti.”
“D.M.”
Dante frowned.
“The initials.”
Isabella typed DOMENICO352.
The screen unlocked.
Marco exhaled.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Payments.
Video recordings.
Signed agreements.
Names.
Enzo.
Alessandro.
Judges.
Politicians.
Executives.
Police commanders.
Enough to destroy an empire.
Dante stared.
“So this is what they killed for.”
Isabella looked at him.
“What do we do?”
He did not hesitate.
“Copy it.”
“To where?”
“Everywhere.”
Marco began uploading encrypted copies.
Father Sebastian looked toward the chapel door.
“You don’t understand.”
Dante glanced at him.
“What?”
“If those files leave the estate, Enzo won’t negotiate.”
“He never was.”
“He’ll kill Alessandro.”
Dante looked unmoved.
“Alessandro chose his side.”
“And Cecilia.”
Dante stopped.
“What?”
Father Sebastian swallowed.
“Cecilia knew where the ledger was.”
“No, she didn’t.”
“She knew Elena had hidden it with the christening things.”
Dante stared.
“Why wouldn’t she take it?”
“Because she made a deal.”
“With Enzo?”
The priest nodded.
Dante’s face went cold.
Isabella stepped closer.
“She was protecting you.”
“Everybody keeps saying that.”
A shout came from outside.
Then another.
Dante turned.
Marco’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“The vault is empty.”
Isabella’s stomach dropped.
“Luca?”
“Gone.”
She was already running.
Dante caught up.
“Isabella!”
“My baby!”
The words came out before she realized them.
My baby.
Not the baby.
Not Luca.
Dante heard it too.
There was no time to process it.
They reached the service elevator.
The vault doors were open.
Sophie sat on the floor.
“Bella!”
Isabella dropped beside her.
“Where’s Luca?”
“Cecilia took him.”
“Why?”
“She said someone opened the second gate.”
Dante froze.
“What second gate?”
Gabriel appeared from the corridor.
“The tunnel.”
Dante looked at him.
“What tunnel?”
“Your father built an evacuation route beneath the east grounds.”
“Where does it end?”
Gabriel’s face went pale.
“Outside the estate wall.”
They ran.
The tunnel entrance was behind the lowest wine rack.
Stone stairs led down.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
The passage stretched nearly two hundred yards.
At the end was an iron gate.
Open.
Rain beyond.
Dante emerged first.
A vehicle idled on the service road.
Cecilia stood beside it.
Luca was in her arms.
Across from her stood Enzo.
Dante raised his gun.
“Mother.”
Cecilia looked at him.
Her face was wet with rain and tears.
“I’m sorry.”
Isabella’s heart broke.
“You brought him here?”
Cecilia looked at Luca.
“I brought Enzo what he thinks he wants.”
Enzo extended his arms.
“The child.”
Cecilia stepped closer.
Dante shouted.
“NO.”
Cecilia stopped.
Then smiled strangely.
“No, Enzo.”
She opened Luca’s blanket.
The baby was not there.
A doll lay inside.
Enzo’s face changed.
Isabella gasped.
Cecilia dropped the bundle.
Marco stepped from the darkness behind the vehicle.
He was holding Luca.
Safe.
Enzo reached for his gun.
Dante moved.
A shot cracked through the rain.
Cecilia fell.
“Mother!”
Dante caught her before she hit the road.
Marco tackled Enzo.
The gun skidded away.
Isabella ran to Luca.
She took him.
Held him.
Cried into his blanket.
Dante knelt over Cecilia.
Blood darkened the side of her coat, but she was conscious.
“Don’t you dare,” Dante whispered.
Cecilia smiled weakly.
“You finally sound like your father.”
“Stay with me.”
“They needed to believe I betrayed you.”
“You could have told me.”
“You’re terrible at pretending.”
Despite everything, Dante laughed through tears.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Marco had sent the ledger.
Not to one authority.
To dozens.
Federal investigators.
Reporters.
Attorneys.
Independent prosecutors.
Enzo heard the sirens.
For the first time, fear entered his face.
“You idiot,” he spat at Dante.
“You destroyed your own family.”
Dante looked at Isabella holding Luca.
Then at Cecilia.
Then at the estate.
“No.”
He stood.
“I ended what was destroying it.”
Enzo was taken back through the tunnel.
Cecilia was placed in a vehicle for the hospital.
Sophie stayed close to Isabella.
It should have been over.
Then Dante’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke.
A video arrived.
Dante opened it.
A man sat inside an airport terminal.
He held a passport.
Beside him was an old photograph of Elena.
Dante stared.
Isabella looked over his shoulder.
The man raised his eyes toward the camera.
He resembled Luca.
Not slightly.
Unmistakably.
A message appeared beneath the video.
ENZO WAS NEVER THE FATHER OF THE MERCY LEDGER.
Dante’s expression hardened.
Another line appeared.
ASK CECILIA WHO LUCA’S GRANDFATHER REALLY IS.
Isabella looked toward the vehicle carrying Cecilia away.
Its doors were closing.
May you like
Then the final message arrived.
BEFORE SHE DIES, ASK HER WHY DANTE MORETTI IS NOT A MORETTI.
