Chapter 8 - The Truth Hidden Inside My Home

The drive back to the mansion felt longer than it should have.

Every red light.

Every slow-moving car.

Every second that passed.

It all felt like someone was pulling time apart just to torture me.

Because somewhere inside that house were my daughters.

And somewhere inside that house was my brother.

Richard.

The man I trusted.

The man who held my shoulder at my wife's funeral and told me he would never let my family face pain alone.

The same man who had just entered the nursery without permission.

Without explanation.

Without me knowing.

I tightened my grip around the steering wheel.

A part of me wanted to believe there was a reasonable explanation.

Maybe he went there because he was worried.

Maybe he wanted to check on the girls.

Maybe there was something I didn't understand.

But another part of me—the part that had built an empire by recognizing danger before it arrived—knew better.

People didn't hide harmless things.

They didn't keep secrets unless those secrets mattered.

And Richard had been hiding something for months.

When I finally reached the mansion, security was already waiting outside.

I barely stopped the car before stepping out.

"What happened?"

My head of security, Marcus, approached immediately.

"Mr. Caruso."

His expression was serious.

"Richard arrived twenty minutes ago."

"Where is he now?"

"In the nursery."

My heart dropped.

"Are the girls safe?"

Marcus nodded quickly.

"Yes. Elise is with them."

I froze.

"Elise?"

"She was already there when we arrived."

That made no sense.

"Why didn't she leave?"

Marcus looked at me.

"Because your brother told her not to."

The anger inside me rose instantly.

I walked toward the entrance.

Nobody stopped me.

Nobody needed to.

Everyone in that house knew something had changed.

This wasn't the same night I walked toward the nursery ready to fire Elise.

That man was gone.

The man who thought he understood everything.

The man who believed control meant safety.

Now I knew the truth.

Control was an illusion.

The only thing that mattered was who stood beside you when everything collapsed.

I reached the nursery door.

Before opening it, I heard voices.

Richard.

And Elise.

"You don't understand what Sofia wanted."

Richard's voice was tense.

Elise answered calmly.

"No. I understand exactly what she wanted."

I opened the door.

Both of them turned.

Richard looked surprised.

Elise looked relieved.

The twins were sitting in the crib between them.

Safe.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Always the first thing.

Their safety.

Everything else came second.

"What are you doing here?"

My voice was directed at Richard.

He looked at me.

"Victor."

"Answer the question."

A long silence.

Then:

"I came to talk."

I laughed quietly.

"At three in the morning?"

His face tightened.

"I needed to make sure something was still here."

My eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Richard looked at the envelope sitting on the table.

The one Sofia wrote.

The one she left behind.

"The letter."

My entire body became still.

"You came here for Sofia's letter."

Richard didn't deny it.

And that was enough.

I stepped closer.

"Why?"

He looked away.

"Because that letter was never meant to reach you."

The room went silent.

Elise looked at him with disbelief.

"What did you say?"

Richard sighed.

"I knew Sofia wrote it."

My anger returned.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"And you still let me believe she died without leaving anything?"

"I was trying to protect you."

I shook my head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

My voice became colder.

"But nobody explains why protecting me always requires lying to me."

Richard looked hurt.

"Because you don't understand what Sofia was dealing with."

"Then explain."

He was quiet.

"Explain."

This time, he did.

"Sofia discovered something bigger than Daniel's theft."

I stared at him.

"How much bigger?"

Richard looked at the twins.

Then back at me.

"Someone inside the company wasn't just stealing money."

A pause.

"They were building a case against you."

My expression changed.

"Against me?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

Richard hesitated.

"Fraud."

The word felt impossible.

"What?"

"Sofia found documents."

"What documents?"

"Documents designed to make it look like you were involved in financial crimes."

I stared at him.

The accusation wasn't just about money.

It was about destroying my entire life.

My company.

My reputation.

My freedom.

"Who created them?"

Richard didn't answer.

I already knew.

"Daniel?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

The answer surprised me.

"Then who?"

He looked at me.

And said the one name I wasn't prepared to hear.

"Me."

The room stopped.

I couldn't process it.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

"What?"

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

"I created some of the documents."

Elise stepped back.

"You..."

Richard looked at her.

"I was trying to uncover who was behind it."

I stared.

"You're telling me you forged evidence against me to find someone?"

"Yes."

"Do you understand how insane that sounds?"

"I know."

My hands curled into fists.

"You let Sofia think you were involved."

"I needed her to believe it."

"Why?"

Richard looked at the floor.

"Because the person behind it was watching everyone."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Someone was watching Sofia."

He nodded.

"Someone was watching all of us."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"I don't know."

That was the first time I believed he was telling the truth.

Because Richard looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

"What happened the night of the accident?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"She was supposed to meet me."

My heart tightened.

"What?"

"Sofia called me."

"When?"

"Two hours before the accident."

The words hit hard.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she asked me not to."

I looked at Elise.

Then back at him.

"Everyone has a promise from my wife."

Richard nodded.

"Because Sofia knew she might not make it."

Silence.

No one moved.

"She knew?"

Richard looked broken.

"She suspected."

"Suspected what?"

"That someone close to her was trying to silence her."

My eyes moved toward the nursery.

Toward my daughters.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Richard's voice became quiet.

"Because she knew you would destroy anyone responsible."

I said nothing.

Because I couldn't deny it.

Sofia knew me.

She knew exactly what I would become.

A man chasing revenge.

A man who would forget everything except punishment.

Richard stepped closer.

"But she also knew something else."

"What?"

"That Elise would remind you who you were before the anger."

I looked at Elise.

She lowered her eyes.

"I didn't know she thought that."

"She did."

Richard smiled sadly.

"She told me you would hate needing help."

That sounded like Sofia.

"She said you would think accepting love made you weak."

I looked away.

Because it was true.

Richard continued.

"But she believed one day you would understand."

The room became quiet.

Then one of the twins made a small sound.

Rosie reached toward me.

A tiny hand.

A tiny request.

I walked over and picked her up.

She rested against my chest.

And for the first time in days, I felt something other than anger.

Peace.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

I looked at Richard.

"If you were trying to protect Sofia, why come for the letter now?"

His expression changed.

Because that was the question that mattered.

Finally, he answered.

"Because I received a message."

My eyes narrowed.

"From who?"

Richard reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

A single message appeared on the screen.

No name.

No number.

Just words.

I read them.

And my blood ran cold.

You failed to stop her. Now finish what she started.

I looked up.

"Who sent this?"

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know."

But then Elise spoke.

Quietly.

Almost afraid.

"I do."

Everyone turned toward her.

My heart started beating faster.

"Who?"

Elise looked at the message.

Then at me.

And the fear in her eyes told me the answer was worse than anything I imagined.

"Someone Sofia trusted."

A pause.

"Someone she never thought would betray her."

I held Rosie closer.

Because suddenly, the enemy wasn't outside.

It wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't someone hiding in the dark.

It was someone who had been invited into our lives.

Someone who knew our family.

May you like

Someone who knew our weaknesses.

And someone who had been waiting for the right moment to destroy everything Sofia fought to protect.
