Chapter 5 - The Girl Leonard Took

Nora zoomed in on the photograph.
"Who is that?"
Vale looked.
A figure appeared behind Leonard.
Male.
Tall.
Face obscured.
Elias stared.
"I know that coat."
Claire looked at him.
"Who?"
"My brother."
Vale turned.
"You said Leonard had no brother."
"Leonard doesn't."
"Then whose brother?"
"Mine."
Vale went still.
Elias whispered, "Samuel."
Mrs. Hale sat down hard.
"Samuel died at Saint Vincent's."
Elias looked at her.
"No body was ever found."
Nora had reached the point where dead people returning barely surprised her.
"What does Samuel have to do with Lily?"
Claire shook her head.
"I don't know."
Nora rounded on her.
"No more of that."
"Nora—"
"No more half-truths. No more protecting me with lies."
Claire flinched.
Nora continued.
"You disappeared for seventeen years. You had another daughter. You kept her secret. Now she's tied to a chair because every adult in this room decided secrecy was safer than truth."
Claire lowered her eyes.
Nora's voice softened.
"Tell me everything."
So Claire did.
Lily wasn't Claire's biological daughter.
She was Leonard's.
Nora stared.
"Leonard has a daughter?"
"Her mother died when Lily was two."
"And you took her?"
"Leonard wanted to use her inheritance rights."
Nora understood.
"Victor's trust."
Claire nodded.
"Victor's will included descendants of both branches."
"So Lily and I are both heirs."
"Yes."
Vale said, "Leonard needs both signatures."
Claire nodded.
"Or one heir declared legally incapable."
Nora felt cold.
"He wants to control Lily through guardianship."
"And you?"
Claire whispered, "He wants you to sign voluntarily."
Nora looked at the image.
"He won't get either."
Vale said, "Then we make him believe he will."
Nora turned.
"We?"
Vale met her gaze.
"I brought this to your door."
"Without knowing."
"Still brought it."
Nora studied him.
Adrian Vale was dangerous.
He had admitted as much without saying it.
But he had also torn up the diner contract the moment he realized something larger was happening.
And when bullets came through the windows, he had protected Nora before himself.
She didn't trust him.
But she was beginning to believe him.
"What's your plan?"
Vale looked at Elias.
"We give Leonard what he wants."
Elias understood.
"A signature."
"A fake one."
Claire shook her head.
"He'll verify."
"Then we don't fake Nora's signature."
Vale looked toward Marco.
"We use his."
Marco laughed.
"You think I'll help?"
Vale crouched beside him.
"I think you've spent sixteen years pretending to be loyal to me."
Marco's smile faded.
Vale continued.
"That means you know what I do to traitors."
Nora stepped between them.
"No."
Vale looked up.
"No torture."
"He tried to kill you."
"And I'm not becoming him."
Something changed in Vale's eyes.
Respect.
Nora crouched beside Marco.
"Leonard will kill you."
Marco said nothing.
"You know that."
Still nothing.
"You failed tonight. He doesn't forgive failure."
Marco looked at her.
"You don't know Leonard."
"I know men like Leonard."
"No, you don't."
"I've waited tables for fourteen years."
Vale almost smiled.
Nora continued.
"Men tell waitresses things they won't tell wives, lawyers, or priests. I've watched cowards act powerful because they had someone weaker to push around. Leonard is just richer."
Marco stared.
Nora leaned closer.
"He'll kill you because you know too much."
Marco's confidence weakened.
"Help us get Lily out."
"Why?"
"Because maybe sixteen years of loyalty to the wrong man doesn't have to decide what you do next."
Vale looked at Nora.
Marco eventually whispered, "There's a service entrance beneath the kitchen."
Walter said, "The old coal chute."
Marco nodded.
"Leonard doesn't know it's still open."
Nora did.
She had used it to sneak out at sixteen.
Walter stared.
"You knew?"
"Different conversation."
For the first time that night, Claire laughed.
It was small.
Broken.
But real.
They planned quickly.
Elias would enter through the tunnel.
Vale and two men would approach openly.
Nora would carry the ledger.
Claire would remain outside with Mrs. Hale and Walter.
Nora refused.
"Lily sees you, she'll know she's safe."
Claire nodded.
Midnight approached.
They moved through the tunnel.
Nora's heart pounded.
Vale walked beside her.
"You can still stay back."
"No."
"He may kill you."
"He may kill Lily if I don't go."
Vale looked at her.
"You're like Claire."
Nora shook her head.
"I'm like me."
Vale nodded.
"Fair."
They reached the coal chute.
Marco had told the truth.
Unlocked.
Vale went first.
Then Nora.
They entered the kitchen.
Smoke lingered from the damaged front windows.
Voices came from the dining room.
Nora looked through the service opening.
Lily sat tied to a chair.
Leonard stood beside her.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Calm.
Samuel Varen stood nearby.
Elias saw his brother.
His face broke.
"Sam."
Samuel looked toward the kitchen.
He had heard.
Leonard smiled.
"Come out."
Nora stepped into the dining room.
Leonard applauded.
"There she is."
Nora held the ledger.
"Let Lily go."
"After you sign."
"Show me the document."
Leonard placed papers on the counter.
Nora approached.
Vale emerged behind her.
Leonard sighed.
"I specifically didn't invite you."
Vale said, "I'm bad with boundaries."
Nora nearly smiled.
Lily stared at Claire when she entered.
"Mom."
Claire rushed toward her.
Samuel blocked her.
Elias stepped out.
"Move."
Samuel froze.
The brothers stared at each other.
Samuel whispered, "Elias."
Leonard's smile faded.
For the first time, his control slipped.
Nora saw it.
Too many ghosts had arrived.
She placed the ledger on the counter.
"Untie Lily."
Leonard nodded.
Samuel did.
Lily ran to Claire.
Nora breathed.
"Now the papers."
Leonard handed her a pen.
Nora read.
Vale watched.
Then she saw it.
A clause.
Transfer of controlling interest.
Exactly as predicted.
Nora signed.
Leonard smiled.
Then Vale said, "You should read signatures more carefully."
Leonard looked down.
Nora had written:
NORA BENNETT — UNDER DURESS.
Leonard's smile vanished.
"You stupid girl."
Nora calmly capped the pen.
"No. I'm a waitress. We read the fine print because people are always trying to short us."
Leonard grabbed her wrist.
Vale moved instantly.
Samuel drew a gun.
Elias shouted.
Lily screamed.
Then police sirens erupted outside.
Leonard stared.
Nora smiled.
"The diner has cameras."
Walter appeared behind the officers.
"I installed new ones after the fire."
Leonard released Nora.
But he didn't look afraid.
He looked amused.
"Very clever."
Vale frowned.
Leonard stepped backward.
"You think this ends with me?"
Nora said, "It's a start."
Leonard laughed.
Then he looked at Vale.
"Ask your father who actually ordered your mother's death."
Vale froze.
Elias went pale.
Leonard pointed at Samuel.
Samuel lowered his gun.
Vale turned toward Elias.
"My mother?"
Elias whispered, "Adrian..."
Leonard smiled.
"Your father knows."
Police entered.
Leonard raised his hands.
But Vale kept staring at Elias.
"Who killed my mother?"
Elias didn't answer.
Samuel did.
"Claire Bennett."
Nora turned toward her mother.
May you like
Claire's face went white.
And Lily whispered, "Mom... tell them what you did."
