Chapter 5 - The Secret Inside the Crate

Adrian was gone.
His phone went directly to voicemail.
Luca remembered how quickly Adrian had appeared at the wedding.
How conveniently he had possessed answers.
How easily everyone had accepted his confession.
By morning, they returned to the country club.
Security footage showed Adrian entering the service hallway at 12:06 a.m.
At 12:19, the crate was wheeled outside.
But Luca noticed something else.
Adrian wasn't stealing the crate.
He appeared to be chasing whoever was moving it.
A second figure remained mostly hidden behind the cart.
Then the camera caught a hand.
A distinctive ring.
Margaret gasped.
“That belonged to my husband.”
Chloe stared at the screen.
“No.”
Luca looked at her.
“Who has it?”
Chloe sat down.
“My brother.”
Luca hadn't heard Richard Hale's name in years.
Richard was Chloe's older brother.
He had moved overseas shortly before Chloe left Luca.
Or so everyone believed.
Margaret explained the truth.
Richard had managed portions of his father's estate.
He was supposed to establish the granddaughters' trust.
Instead, he had hidden assets.
When Chloe discovered what he had done, Richard offered her money to stay silent.
Luca stared at Chloe.
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“The education money wasn't all I took.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Margaret looked devastated.
“You protected him.”
“He protected me.”
“No,” Margaret said. “He used you.”
Chloe lowered her eyes.
Jessi looked toward the screen.
“So Uncle Richard took the crate?”
“Probably because of the notebook,” Chloe said.
“The notebook?”
“It was his.”
Everyone turned.
Chloe explained that the red notebook contained Richard's handwritten records.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Dates.
Names.
Adrian had helped with one transaction before realizing Richard was behind the larger scheme.
That was why Adrian returned.
He hadn't come to expose Chloe alone.
He had come to expose Richard.
Luca's phone rang.
Adrian.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“I'm fine.”
“Did Richard take the crate?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because something was hidden underneath the lining.”
Luca looked at Jessi.
“What?”
Adrian hesitated.
“A flash drive.”
Chloe closed her eyes.
“What is on it?”
“Your father's financial records.”
Margaret gripped the table.
Adrian continued.
“Richard has spent fifteen years trying to find the original evidence.”
“Where are you?”
“At his office.”
“Why?”
“Because he asked me to come.”
Luca stood.
“No.”
“I owe your family this.”
“You owe my family honesty, not stupidity.”
Adrian laughed weakly.
“Fair.”
“Leave.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because Richard isn't alone.”
Luca heard another voice in the background.
Then the call disconnected.
Jessi grabbed her phone.
“We should call the police.”
“Yes,” Luca said immediately.
Chloe stared at him.
“You'd involve police?”
“If someone is being held against his will? Absolutely.”
That ended the debate.
Authorities handled what happened next.
Luca did not storm into Richard's office.
He did not become an action hero.
He waited with his daughters.
Two hours later, Adrian called.
Richard had been questioned.
The crate had been recovered.
Nobody was injured.
The financial evidence was secured for review.
But the emotional damage couldn't be placed inside an evidence bag.
That evening, the family gathered at Luca's house.
Jessi and Ethan postponed their honeymoon by one day.
Luca objected.
Jessi ignored him.
Again.
The six sisters sat around the kitchen table.
The same table where Luca had once helped with multiplication homework.
Chloe stood awkwardly near the doorway.
Nobody had invited her inside.
Nobody had told her to leave.
Finally Lily spoke.
“Do you know my birthday?”
Chloe froze.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“April nineteenth.”
Correct.
Lily asked another question.
“What's my middle name?”
“Rose.”
Correct again.
“What do I want to study?”
Chloe couldn't answer.
Lily nodded.
“That’s the difference.”
Chloe's eyes filled.
“I kept track.”
“From far away.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Chloe looked at Luca.
Then back at Lily.
“Because I was ashamed.”
Mia shook her head.
“You weren't ashamed at the wedding.”
“I was pretending.”
“For who?”
“Myself.”
That answer landed differently.
Chloe sat.
“I built my entire life around the idea that leaving had been necessary. Every year I stayed away, coming back became harder.”
Sophie asked, “Did you ever love us?”
Chloe covered her mouth.
“Yes.”
“Then why wasn't that enough?”
Chloe cried.
“I don't have an answer that will make sense.”
Luca watched his daughters.
He wanted to protect them.
But they weren't little girls anymore.
They deserved their own questions.
Grace said, “I don't forgive you.”
Chloe nodded.
“I understand.”
Emma said, “Neither do I.”
Another nod.
Mia folded her arms.
“I don't even know if I want a relationship.”
“I understand.”
Lily whispered, “I might someday.”
Everyone looked at her.
She shrugged.
“I said might.”
Chloe almost smiled through her tears.
Jessi remained silent.
Finally Chloe looked at her.
“What about you?”
Jessi stood.
“I spent fifteen years imagining what I'd say if you came back.”
“And?”
“I thought embarrassing you would make me feel better.”
Chloe looked down.
“Did it?”
“For about thirty seconds.”
Luca smiled sadly.
Jessi continued.
“Then I realized I don't want revenge.”
Chloe looked hopeful.
But Jessi wasn't finished.
“I want boundaries.”
Hope became uncertainty.
“You don't get to walk back into our lives because you're lonely now.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to call yourself Mom and expect that word to mean what it means when we say Dad.”
Chloe winced.
“You don't get money from Grandpa's trust.”
“I know.”
“And if you want any relationship with us, you start with the truth.”
Chloe nodded.
“All of it.”
Another nod.
Jessi reached into the recovered crate.
She removed the six boxes.
Then she found something strange underneath them.
A white envelope.
“This wasn't here yesterday.”
Luca frowned.
“Who put it there?”
Jessi opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Six little girls stood beside Luca in their old apartment.
But someone else was visible through the window behind them.
A man.
Richard.
On the back was a handwritten message.
Luca read it twice.
Then looked at Margaret.
Her face collapsed.
Because the message said:
ASK GRANDMA WHY RICHARD WAS THERE THE NIGHT CHLOE LEFT.
Everyone turned toward Margaret.
She sat perfectly still.
May you like
Then Luca asked the question nobody expected to ask.
“What did you do?”
