Chapter 4 - The Recording That Changed Everything

The room became silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind of silence that came before something broke.
The recording device sat in Clara’s hand.
Small.
Simple.
Almost meaningless.
But everyone inside that room knew it carried something far heavier than its size.
A secret.
A plan.
A voice from the past.
Alexander stared at it.
Then he looked at Bianca.
“Is that your voice?”
Bianca did not answer.
That was her mistake.
Because sometimes silence was the loudest confession.
Clara pressed the button again.
The recording continued.
A younger Bianca’s voice filled the room.
“Alexander is too emotional when it comes to his mother. If she stays close, she will always influence him.”
My chest tightened.
Not because I was surprised.
Deep down, I had always felt something was wrong.
But hearing those words out loud was different.
There was a difference between knowing someone disliked you…
and hearing them explain how they planned to remove you.
Alexander stood completely still.
His face had lost all color.
The woman he married.
The woman he trusted.
The woman who shared his home.
Was standing in front of him with a voice that belonged to someone he no longer recognized.
The recording continued.
“I don’t want her in our marriage.”
Another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
Ewald.
Bianca’s father.
“She’s old. She’ll eventually accept that her son has his own family.”
Bianca laughed softly.
“She won’t if Alexander keeps feeling guilty.”
I looked at Alexander.
That one sentence hurt him the most.
Because it was true.
They knew exactly what they were doing.
They were not trying to solve a problem.
They were creating one.
The recording continued.
“We just need to make him believe she is too dependent.”
Bianca’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“She always acts like a victim.”
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Not because I wanted to cry.
Because I remembered every phone call.
Every unanswered message.
Every Sunday I sat alone at my kitchen table waiting for Alexander to visit.
I remembered wondering if I had done something wrong.
If I had loved him too much.
If being his mother had become a burden.
But now I knew.
Someone had planted those thoughts.
Someone had carefully built a wall between us.
Alexander suddenly grabbed the device from Clara’s hand.
“Where did you get this?”
His voice was shaking.
Clara looked at him.
“I kept it.”
“For three years?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Clara looked at Bianca.
“Because I was afraid.”
Bianca’s expression changed.
“You’re lying.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“I was afraid of what your family would do if I spoke.”
Ewald stepped forward.
“This is absurd.”
Nobody looked at him.
Not even Lydia.
Because for the first time, they were all watching Bianca.
Alexander held the recording device tightly.
“Tell me she is lying.”
Bianca looked at him.
Her eyes softened.
A perfect expression.
The same expression she had used for years.
The one that made Alexander apologize.
The one that made him doubt himself.
“Alexander, you’re really going to believe some random woman who appears after years?”
I watched my son.
Waiting.
Because this was the moment.
Not when he heard the recording.
Not when he saw the papers.
This was the moment where he had to decide whether he wanted comfort or truth.
“I asked you a question,” he said.
Bianca looked away.
“Of course I didn’t mean it like that.”
“That’s your answer?”
“Alexander…”
“No.”
His voice became louder.
“You made me believe my mother was the problem.”
The room went quiet.
Bianca’s face hardened.
“She was always interfering.”
I looked at her.
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden anymore.
Not disguised.
“She was my mother,” Alexander said.
“And I was your wife.”
The way Bianca said it made something clear.
She did not see them as two people he loved.
She saw them as two sides fighting for control.
I stood slowly.
“Bianca.”
She turned toward me.
“I want to ask you something.”
She smiled coldly.
“What?”
“Did you ever once think about how Alexander felt?”
She frowned.
“What?”
“Not me.”
I touched my chest.
“Not your feelings.”
I looked at my son.
“His.”
She did not answer.
Because she never had.
The conversation was never about Alexander.
It was always about winning.
Clara walked toward the table and placed another envelope down.
“There’s more.”
Alexander looked at her.
“More?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Bianca immediately reacted.
“No.”
Everyone noticed.
Even Ewald.
He slowly turned toward his daughter.
“You knew about another envelope?”
Bianca froze.
A mistake.
A small one.
But enough.
Alexander saw it.
“What is inside?”
Clara looked at me.
“I think Helga should open it.”
I hesitated.
Because suddenly, I understood.
The truth was arriving faster than I was ready for.
For years, I wanted answers.
But answers had a price.
Sometimes the truth did not heal immediately.
Sometimes it hurt first.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of printed emails.
The first one had a date.
Three years ago.
Before Alexander stopped visiting me regularly.
Before he started saying he needed space.
Before Bianca convinced him that I was damaging his marriage.
I read the first line.
My hands became cold.
Because it was written by Bianca.
“Step one: make Alexander believe his mother is becoming a problem.”
Alexander read over my shoulder.
His breathing changed.
I turned the page.
“Step two: reduce contact between them.”
Another page.
“Step three: convince him that helping her financially is unhealthy.”
My eyes moved lower.
And then I saw the final message.
The one that explained everything.
The one that made my heart stop.
Because Bianca had not just wanted distance.
She had wanted something else.
Alexander read it too.
And he whispered:
“No…”
I looked at him.
“What does it say?”
He could barely speak.
“It says…”
He swallowed.
“It says Bianca wanted my mother removed from my life before…”
He stopped.
“Before what?”
He looked at his wife.
And for the first time, Bianca looked truly afraid.
Because Alexander had discovered the part she never wanted him to know.
The reason she needed me gone was not only because of their marriage.
It was because she knew I was the only person who could expose what happened before their wedding.
Alexander held the paper.
“Mom…”
His voice broke.
“She lied about the apartment.”
I frowned.
“What apartment?”
Nobody moved.
Bianca stepped backward.
“Alexander, don’t.”
But it was too late.
He looked at me.
“The apartment you sold.”
My heart stopped.
“What about it?”
He looked at Bianca.
Then back at me.
“She didn’t tell you?”
The room went cold.
I slowly shook my head.
“Tell me what?”
Alexander’s eyes filled with anger and pain.
“The apartment wasn’t just sold because you wanted to help me.”
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
He looked at the document.
Then at Bianca.
“She was involved.”
Bianca’s face turned white.
Because the next secret was no longer hidden.
Alexander opened the final page.

And on it was the name of the person who had bought my apartment...
The person who had been connected to Bianca since before I ever met her...
