Chapter 6 - The Black Ledger

Sebastian stood outside Crown Meridian and made a choice nobody expected.

He let Adrian walk away.

Not because he trusted the threat.

Because he trusted Evelyn.

At least enough to believe she had a reason.

“Mateo stays with Adrian,” Sebastian said.

Adrian shook his head.

“She needs me.”

“She specifically says she doesn’t.”

“She may not have sent that message.”

Sebastian looked toward the tower.

“Exactly.”

I understood.

If Evelyn was being watched, the instruction might belong to Conrad.

Or someone else.

Sebastian turned to me.

“You stay outside.”

“No.”

“Lena.”

“This is not negotiable.”

His eyes flashed.

“It absolutely is.”

“The ledger involves my investigation.”

“That does not make you bulletproof.”

“I’m aware.”

“Then act like it.”

I stepped closer.

“You need someone who understands what is in that ledger.”

He hated that I was right.

Finally, he nodded.

“Stay behind me.”

We entered through a service route.

Most of the building had been evacuated under the excuse of an electrical problem.

The elevator stopped at forty.

We took the stairs.

At the forty-first floor, Sebastian used a mechanical key.

No electronics.

The door opened.

The penthouse was dark.

“Evelyn?” Sebastian called.

No answer.

We moved toward the library.

The door stood open.

Evelyn sat exactly where the photograph had shown.

The ledger was in front of her.

She looked older in person than on camera.

Tired.

Haunted.

But unmistakably Sebastian’s sister.

He stopped.

Neither moved.

Twelve years stood between them.

Evelyn rose.

“Seb.”

His face broke.

Only for a second.

She crossed the room.

He met her halfway.

No dramatic speech.

No accusation.

He simply pulled her into his arms.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

I turned away.

When they separated, Sebastian held her shoulders.

“Where have you been?”

“Surviving.”

“Why didn’t you come home?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

His eyes narrowed.

“The year Dad died.”

“He found me first.”

Sebastian stared.

“So he staged his death.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To disappear legally. Financially. Politically.”

“And the body?”

“One of his men.”

Sebastian’s expression hardened.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn looked toward me.

“Watching.”

My skin prickled.

“Here?”

“Maybe.”

Sebastian scanned the room.

“We checked surveillance.”

“He owns systems you don’t know exist.”

“You took the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it proves everything.”

I stepped closer.

“Can I see?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then opened it.

Pages of handwritten transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Payoffs.

Officials.

Companies.

Some entries went back fifteen years.

Others were recent.

Very recent.

I recognized several transfers from my investigation.

“This is the source ledger.”

“Yes,” Evelyn said.

“Project Meridian wasn’t just money laundering.”

“No.”

“What was it?”

“A control network.”

Sebastian stared.

Evelyn explained.

Conrad had spent decades building leverage.

Loans to politicians.

Payments to executives.

Hidden ownership in construction firms.

Private information collected through security contracts.

Project Meridian turned secrets into power.

Crown Meridian Tower was the center.

Not because it housed money.

Because it housed data.

“Where?” Sebastian asked.

Evelyn looked toward the floor.

“Under us.”

Sebastian frowned.

“There is no floor under the penthouse except mechanical.”

“There is another room.”

He stared.

“Dad built it during construction.”

“How do you access it?”

Evelyn opened the ledger.

Inside the back cover was a brass key.

“C-17.”

Sebastian took it.

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

I heard Sebastian move.

“Down.”

I crouched.

A crash came from the hallway.

Evelyn gasped.

Emergency lights flickered on.

The ledger was gone.

So was Evelyn.

“Evelyn!”

Sebastian ran into the corridor.

A service door swung slowly.

He reached it.

Empty stairwell.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown.

He answered.

Conrad Ward’s voice came through.

Older.

Cold.

Familiar enough that Sebastian’s face went blank.

“Hello, son.”

Sebastian gripped the phone.

“Where is she?”

“You never learned patience.”

“If you hurt her—”

“I already hurt her. Years ago. You simply chose not to notice.”

Sebastian’s eyes filled with fury.

“What do you want?”

“Bring Lena to the mechanical level.”

I froze.

Sebastian looked at me.

“No.”

Conrad laughed.

“You see? Love does make men careless.”

Sebastian’s voice turned lethal.

“You don’t get her.”

“I don’t need her. I need what she knows.”

“Then talk to me.”

“You were never good with numbers.”

The line disconnected.

Sebastian turned to me.

“You are leaving.”

“I’m not.”

“He wants you.”

“Exactly.”

“No.”

“We know where he wants us.”

“That is a trap.”

“Obviously.”

“And your argument is?”

“We use it.”

Sebastian stared.

“You’re insane.”

“Maybe spending the night with you was contagious.”

That almost earned a smile.

Almost.

Mateo called.

His voice came quickly.

“We lost Adrian.”

Sebastian’s expression hardened.

“How?”

“He hit one of my men and took a car.”

“Where is he going?”

“Tower.”

Sebastian looked toward the service stairs.

Everything was converging beneath us.

Conrad.

Evelyn.

Adrian.

The ledger.

And whatever waited below Crown Meridian.

We reached the mechanical floor.

Sebastian found the hidden lock behind an electrical panel.

The brass key fit.

A wall section opened.

Behind it was a staircase descending into darkness.

We went down.

The underground room was enormous.

Servers lined the walls.

File cabinets.

Screens.

Years of secrets.

At the center sat Evelyn.

Alive.

Her hands were free.

That confused me.

Then a man stepped from behind the servers.

Gray hair.

Tall.

Elegant suit.

Sebastian stopped.

“Dad.”

Conrad Ward smiled.

“Hello, Sebastian.”

Sebastian moved toward Evelyn.

Conrad raised one hand.

“Not yet.”

“Let her go.”

“She came willingly.”

Sebastian looked at Evelyn.

She didn’t deny it.

My stomach turned.

“Evelyn?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Sebastian’s face changed.

Conrad smiled.

“My daughter finally remembered where loyalty belongs.”

I stared at Evelyn.

She looked terrified.

Not loyal.

Terrified.

Something else was happening.

Conrad placed the black ledger on the table.

“Lena.”

He looked at me.

“You traced eighty-seven million dollars.”

“Yes.”

“I need to know who else has your findings.”

“My firm.”

He smiled.

“No.”

My heart sank.

“You checked.”

“Of course.”

Sebastian shifted subtly toward him.

Conrad noticed.

“You always did think violence solved complex problems.”

“You taught me.”

“And yet you became sentimental.”

Conrad looked at me.

“That was unexpected.”

Sebastian stepped in front of me.

“Do not look at her.”

Conrad laughed.

“There. Exactly that.”

Then another voice came from behind us.

“He’s stalling.”

Adrian.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Conrad’s smile vanished.

Evelyn stood suddenly.

“Now!”

Everything happened at once.

Mateo’s security team entered from a second access corridor.

Conrad reached beneath the table.

Sebastian lunged.

The servers went dark.

A deafening alarm sounded.

Red emergency lights flashed.

I saw Evelyn grab the ledger.

Adrian pulled her toward the stairs.

Sebastian wrestled Conrad away from the control panel.

Then Conrad hit one final switch.

A computerized voice announced:

DATA PURGE INITIATED.

I ran toward the terminal.

“How long?”

A countdown appeared.

00:59.

Sebastian pinned Conrad against the wall.

“Stop it!”

Conrad smiled.

“Too late.”

00:48.

I opened the terminal.

Encrypted drives began wiping.

Thirty years of evidence disappearing.

00:37.

“Lena!” Sebastian shouted.

“I’m trying!”

00:29.

I found an external transfer process.

A destination flashed.

Unknown remote server.

Someone had already been copying the files.

00:21.

I followed the route.

Then froze.

The destination name appeared.

ELLISON & PARK.

My company.

Someone at my office had been receiving Conrad’s files for years.

00:14.

A second name appeared under authorized recipient.

I recognized it immediately.

My boss.

Daniel Ellison.

00:09.

Sebastian shouted my name.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel had assigned me the C17 case.

Daniel had sent me toward Sebastian.

Daniel had known everything.

The countdown hit five.

Four.

Three.

Then a message appeared across the screen.

PURGE CANCELLED REMOTELY.

Everyone stopped.

Conrad’s smile disappeared.

Another message appeared.

REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR CONNECTED.

Then the speakers crackled.

May you like

Daniel Ellison’s voice filled the room.

“Hello, Lena.”
