Chapter 9 - The Door He Was Afraid to Open

Victor opened the letter after Thomas left.

Nora remained beside him.

He read silently.

Then again.

His mother had known about Gabriel.

Not only known.

She had helped Dominic hide him.

Victor sat down.

"She lied to me."

Nora sat opposite him.

"She protected a child."

"By letting me believe I was alone?"

"Both things can be true."

Victor looked at her.

That sentence described nearly everyone in his family.

Dominic loved his sons and kept secrets.

Adrian protected Victor and betrayed his trust.

Gabriel watched Nora without permission and helped protect her.

Even Sylvia had hurt Nora while eventually telling the truth.

People were rarely one thing.

Victor had spent his life dividing everyone into loyal or disloyal.

Useful or dangerous.

Family or enemy.

Marriage had taught him something business never could.

Love lived in uncomfortable spaces.

Months passed.

Victor sold the penthouse.

Nora hadn't asked him to.

He simply realized the place represented a life neither of them wanted.

They rented a smaller house outside the city.

Not together.

Victor lived there.

Nora remained with her mother.

But she visited.

Then the twins stayed one afternoon.

Then one night.

Victor survived.

Barely.

At 2:14 A.M., Leo screamed.

At 2:19, Mia joined him.

At 2:25, Victor stood in the kitchen with formula on his shirt and one sock missing.

Nora appeared in the doorway.

She had planned to leave earlier but fallen asleep upstairs.

She watched him.

"Need help?"

Victor looked at both babies.

"Desperately."

She laughed.

Together they settled them.

At three, they sat on the kitchen floor.

Victor looked at Nora.

"I understand now."

"What?"

"Why you looked like you wanted to kill me every morning."

She laughed again.

Victor smiled.

Then became serious.

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

"I'll probably say it forever."

"You don't have to."

"I do."

Nora rested her head against the cabinet.

"You're different."

"I'm trying."

"No."

She looked at him.

"You are."

Victor didn't know what to say.

So he said nothing.

Weeks later, Gabriel came for dinner.

It was awkward.

Then less awkward.

Victor learned his brother loved terrible old movies.

Gabriel learned Victor couldn't cook.

Nora learned both men became absurdly competitive over card games.

Family began forming where secrecy had once lived.

The legal dispute concluded.

Most of Dominic's trust was restored.

Victor placed the recovered assets into an independently managed trust for Leo and Mia.

He refused personal control.

Adrian remained involved in the business but no longer kept secrets "for Victor's protection."

That became a rule.

Sylvia moved to New York after accepting another position.

Before leaving, she sent Nora a letter.

Nora never told Victor what it said.

Victor didn't ask.

That was progress too.

Then came the anniversary of the morning Nora left.

Victor woke at 4:58 A.M.

He looked at the clock.

Five minutes later, 5:03 appeared.

He sat quietly.

A year ago, he had walked into an empty penthouse.

Now he heard something upstairs.

A baby crying.

Then another.

Victor smiled.

He walked upstairs.

Nora stood in the nursery holding Mia.

Victor stopped.

Nora had been spending more nights there.

But they had never officially discussed moving back together.

She handed him Leo.

"Your son has opinions."

"So does his mother."

"Careful."

Victor smiled.

They settled the twins.

Then Nora followed him downstairs.

She held an envelope.

Victor's smile faded.

"What is that?"

"Sit."

His stomach tightened.

"Nora."

"Sit."

He did.

She placed the envelope before him.

Victor stared at it.

Legal office.

His heart sank.

"Divorce papers?"

Nora said nothing.

Victor swallowed.

If that was what she wanted, he would accept it.

That was part of loving her now.

Not possession.

Choice.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a document.

He read the first line.

Then looked up.

"Nora..."

She was crying.

But smiling.

The document wasn't a divorce filing.

It was something else.

Before Victor could read further, the nursery door upstairs suddenly opened.

Gabriel's voice called down:

"Victor, you need to come up here."

Victor stood.

Something in Gabriel's voice erased his smile.

He looked toward the staircase.

May you like

Gabriel appeared at the top holding Dominic's old blue file.

"There was another page hidden inside the cover."
