Chapter 5 - The Secret Buried Under My Name

A wounded man collapsed beside the hidden garage door, whispering:

"They never wanted Audrey... they wanted you."

When Elias searched the underground archive beneath the Thorne mansion, he found a sealed envelope marked with his old military code.

Two words were written across the front:

"Final Target."

Elias finally understood.

The hunt had started nineteen years ago.

I stood in the hidden room holding the old military file in my hands.

For years, I had buried that part of my life.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I knew exactly what happened when people discovered the truth.

They didn't see Elias Vale.

They saw the Monster.

The man who walked into impossible situations and came back alive.

The man whose enemies disappeared.

The man whose name became a warning.

But Audrey had never known that man.

To her, I was just Dad.

The person who taught her how to ride a bicycle.

The person who waited outside her school when she was sick.

The person who stayed awake all night when she had nightmares.

I wanted to keep those two lives separate.

I failed.

Because someone from my past had found the only way to hurt me.

They didn't come after me.

They came after her.

"Dad."

Audrey's voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

She stood in the doorway holding herself together, but I could see the exhaustion behind her eyes.

She had survived eight months in that house.

Eight months surrounded by people who convinced her nobody would believe her.

And somehow...

She was still standing.

I walked toward her.

"I'm sorry."

The words came out before I could stop them.

Her expression changed.

"For what?"

"For not knowing."

She looked away.

"You couldn't have known."

"I should have."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"You came."

A pause.

"That's what matters."

Those four words hurt more than anything else.

Because they reminded me of the one thing I couldn't forgive myself for.

She had needed me.

And I arrived eight months late.

Mason stepped into the room.

"Colonel."

I turned.

His expression had changed.

That meant something.

"What did you find?"

He looked toward Arthur.

"Security footage."

Arthur's face remained calm.

Too calm.

"From when?"

Mason looked at him.

"From before Audrey disappeared."

Julian immediately reacted.

"What?"

Everyone looked at him.

For the first time, Julian seemed genuinely surprised.

Mason continued.

"The footage shows someone entering this mansion three days before Audrey was locked away."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Mason handed me a tablet.

The image was blurry.

A man entering through a side entrance.

But even through the poor quality...

I recognized the posture.

The confidence.

The way he moved.

I had seen that before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

My hand tightened around the tablet.

"No."

Audrey looked at me.

"Dad?"

I stared at the screen.

Because the person in the footage was impossible.

He was supposed to be dead.

Mason lowered his voice.

"Colonel."

I nodded.

"I know."

Julian looked between us.

"Who is it?"

I didn't answer.

Because saying his name made it real.

Arthur looked at me.

"You remember him."

I turned.

"How do you know?"

A small smile appeared on Arthur's face.

"Because he was the reason Operation Vale existed."

The room went silent.

I stepped toward him.

"You knew he survived."

Arthur said nothing.

That was enough.

"You knew."

Arthur finally looked at me.

"Some secrets are expensive."

"And you sold my daughter for one?"

His expression hardened.

"Your daughter was never the deal."

Audrey moved closer to me.

I felt her hand grab my arm.

The words made my entire body go cold.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur looked at her.

For a moment, something almost like guilt appeared.

Almost.

Then it disappeared.

"Your father spent his life creating enemies."

I stepped between them.

"Don't talk to her."

Arthur ignored me.

"The world thinks soldiers like Elias protect people."

He looked at Audrey.

"But they never tell you what happens afterward."

I stared at him.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

"Don't I?"

His voice became quieter.

"How many families lost someone because of your missions?"

I didn't answer.

Because I knew the number.

Every soldier did.

The enemy was never just one person.

Every action had consequences.

Every victory created someone who wanted revenge.

But there was a difference.

A line.

And Arthur had crossed it.

"You wanted revenge."

Arthur nodded.

"At first."

The answer surprised me.

"At first?"

He looked toward the window.

"Then I realized something."

A pause.

"Revenge was too simple."

I watched him carefully.

"So what was this?"

His eyes returned to mine.

"Punishment."

The word echoed.

Julian looked uncomfortable.

"Father..."

Arthur turned sharply.

"Enough."

And Julian became silent.

That moment confirmed everything.

Julian wasn't the mastermind.

Arthur wasn't even the final piece.

There was someone above him.

Someone who controlled everyone.

I looked at the folder again.

Operation Vale.

Final Target.

The pieces connected.

The hidden room.

The surveillance.

Audrey's imprisonment.

My arrival.

Everything.

Someone wanted me to come here.

Someone wanted me to discover the truth.

But why?

Mason suddenly looked at the security feed.

"Colonel."

His voice changed.

I turned.

"What?"

"Movement outside."

Everyone froze.

Mason zoomed in.

Several vehicles were approaching the mansion.

Not police.

Not civilians.

Professional.

Organized.

Julian looked confused.

"I didn't call anyone."

Arthur's face finally changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"You did."

Julian looked at him.

"What?"

Arthur stared at the approaching vehicles.

"No."

A pause.

"You made the call."

Julian's expression collapsed.

"I didn't."

"You called him when Elias arrived."

Silence.

I looked at Julian.

"You were trying to bring someone here."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

For the first time, he looked terrified.

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

I stepped closer.

"Who is coming?"

Julian looked at me.

And whispered:

"The man who owns this family."

The headlights stopped outside.

Doors opened.

People stepped out.

Mason's hand moved toward his weapon.

My team positioned themselves.

Audrey moved behind me.

Then I saw him.

Walking through the gates.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

The man from my past.

The man I thought I buried nineteen years ago.

He stopped beneath the mansion lights.

And smiled.

"Elias Vale."

My entire body went still.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew that face.

I knew the name.

"Victor Kane."

The man who had started Operation Vale.

The man responsible for the bloodiest mission of my career.

The man who should have died.

He looked at Audrey.

Then back at me.

"You finally came."

I said nothing.

Victor smiled.

"Good."

He looked around the mansion.

"Now everyone can see the truth."

The wind moved through the open gates.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor said the words that changed everything.

"Elias Vale was never the hero of Operation Vale."

A pause.

"He was the reason it happened."

And for the first time in nineteen years...

May you like

I wasn't the man hunting the enemy.

I was the target.
