Chapter 9 - The Archive Of Lies

I sat inside my car for almost ten minutes after Daniel ended the call.
Your father didn't just steal the money.
He created the entire fraud plan.
The words repeated in my head.
Since the day my grandfather died.
That was the part I couldn't escape.
Because I had spent years believing my family's problems were caused by personality.
My father's coldness.
My mother's need for control.
Chloe's selfishness.
I thought they were flaws.
I never imagined they were choices.
Planned choices.
Calculated choices.
I looked at the Carter house through the windshield.
The same house where I had celebrated birthdays.
The same house where Grandpa used to sit in the backyard with Leo.
The same house where my father had looked me in the eyes and told me he couldn't spare five thousand dollars.
But he could move millions.
I started the engine.
I didn't drive away.
Not yet.
Because for the first time in my life, I wasn't running from my family.
I was going back to face them.
Daniel met me outside his office an hour later.
He had a hard drive in his hand.
"This is everything we recovered from your father's archive."
I looked at it.
"Everything?"
"Everything we could access."
"Could?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your father protected his files."
"How?"
"Multiple passwords. Encrypted folders. Hidden backups."
I almost smiled.
Of course.
Richard Carter didn't trust anyone.
Not even the people who helped him.
"Did you find the original transfer?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Yes."
My heart tightened.
"And?"
He handed me a printed document.
The first thing I saw was my name.
The second thing I saw was the signature.
Mine.
But it wasn't mine.
I had spent years signing military documents.
Medical forms.
Official reports.
I knew my own handwriting.
This was close.
Very close.
But wrong.
"The person who created this knew your signature."
Daniel pointed at the bottom.
"Look."
I studied it.
Then I saw something.
A small detail.
Something only I would notice.
My real signature always ended with a sharp upward movement.
This one ended flat.
A tiny difference.
A tiny mistake.
But enough.
"They copied me."
Daniel nodded.
"And whoever did this had access to your old documents."
I looked at him.
"My father."
"Most likely."
I turned the page.
The transfer amount was there.
Five million dollars.
But something else caught my attention.
A second signature.
The approval.
The manager.
My mother's name.
I closed my eyes.
Both of them.
Not one.
Both.
When I returned home, Leo was sitting at the table.
He looked up.
"You found something."
I placed the documents down.
"Yes."
He read them silently.
Then his hands tightened.
"They did this?"
I nodded.
"Both of them."
He looked away.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then:
"I used to wonder why Grandpa always warned us about money."
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Leo smiled sadly.
"He used to tell me, 'A person who needs money can be dangerous. But a person who thinks money makes them untouchable is worse.'"
I felt a chill.
Because Grandpa had known people like my parents.
Maybe he had always known.
"What else did he say?"
Leo looked at the old photograph beside him.
"He said family isn't proven by blood."
A pause.
"It's proven by what someone is willing to lose for you."
My eyes moved to him.
The brother who sold his inheritance.
The brother who never asked for anything.
The brother my parents tried to frame.
Suddenly, I understood why Grandpa trusted him.
That night, Daniel discovered something hidden in the archive.
Something that changed everything.
He called me at midnight.
"Vivienne."
I answered immediately.
"What happened?"
"I found a video."
"A video?"
"From your father's private office."
My stomach tightened.
"Of what?"
"Watch it."
A few seconds later, Daniel sent me a file.
I opened it.
The screen showed my father's office.
The camera angle was hidden.
Someone had secretly recorded him.
My father sat behind his desk.
My mother was across from him.
Chloe was standing beside them.
I watched silently.
Then my father's voice came through.
"We need to move faster."
My entire body went cold.
Chloe looked nervous.
"Dad, are you sure?"
He looked at her.
"We have no choice."
My mother crossed her arms.
"Vivienne is becoming suspicious."
My fingers tightened around the phone.
My father leaned back.
"She always was."
The words hurt.
Even though I expected them.
"Then why didn't you stop her?"
My mother's voice.
"Because I thought her injury would distract her."
I stopped breathing.
Her injury.
My injury.
They knew.
They knew exactly how vulnerable I was.
My father continued.
"The trust transfer must be completed before she gets legal help."
Chloe looked worried.
"What if she finds out?"
My father smiled.
Not kindly.
Coldly.
"She won't."
A pause.
"Vivienne has spent her whole life believing we loved her."
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Something deeper.
Because he wasn't just stealing money.
He was counting on my love to protect him.
The video continued.
My mother placed a folder on the desk.
"Leo?"
My father shook his head.
"He's easier."
I froze.
"He trusts us."
Chloe looked uncomfortable.
"But he's innocent."
My father looked at her.
"Nobody is innocent when paperwork says otherwise."
The video ended.
I sat there in silence.
Daniel's voice came through the phone.
"Vivienne."
I couldn't answer.
Because I finally had proof.
Not suspicion.
Not questions.
Proof.
The next morning, I made a decision.
I was going to confront my father.
Not emotionally.
Not as his daughter.
As someone who knew the truth.
Daniel warned me.
"You need to be careful."
"I will."
"He may try to manipulate you."
I looked at the evidence.
"He already has."
Richard Carter was in his office when I arrived.
He looked surprised.
But not shocked.
Almost like he knew this day would come.
"Vivienne."
I placed the folder on his desk.
"What is this?"
"You tell me."
He opened it.
The moment he saw the first page, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"You went too far."
I stared at him.
"No."
My voice was calm.
"You did."
He stood.
"You have no idea what you're accusing me of."
"I have everything."
I placed the video evidence on the desk.
His face changed.
Real fear.
For the first time in my life, I saw my father afraid.
"You recorded me?"
"No."
I looked at him.
"You did that yourself."
He stared at the screen.
Then slowly sat down.
"Vivienne."
His voice softened.
The old technique.
The father voice.
The voice he used whenever he wanted control.
"You don't understand the situation."
I almost laughed.
"That's what you always say."
He looked at me.
"You think this is about money?"
"Isn't it?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"It's about protecting this family."
I stared at him.
"You destroyed it."
His eyes hardened.
"Everything I did was necessary."
"Necessary?"
I stepped closer.
"You stole from your own daughter."
"I protected assets."
"You forged my signature."
"I made decisions."
"You tried to frame Leo."
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"You don't understand what Leo is capable of."
I froze.
"What does that mean?"
Silence.
A mistake.
A real one.
My father realized he had said too much.
"What are you hiding?"
He looked away.
"Nothing."
I walked toward the door.
But before I left, I stopped.
"One thing."
He looked at me.
"You were right about one thing."
A pause.
"Money does reveal people."
His face became unreadable.
"And it revealed you."
I left.
But I didn't feel victorious.
Because outside his office, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Vivienne."
His voice was different.
"What happened?"
"I found something else."
"What?"
A pause.
Then:
"The person who helped your father wasn't your mother."
I stopped walking.
"What?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Your mother signed the documents."
"Yes."
"But she wasn't the person who created the plan."
My heart started beating faster.
"Then who was?"
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
"The person who knew every detail of your life."
I waited.
"Your grandfather's former attorney."
I froze.
Because suddenly, the betrayal was bigger than my family.
May you like
And the person who was supposed to protect my grandfather's legacy...
May have been the one who helped destroy it.
