Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

""Keep the cameras rolling,"" Clara whispered, her instincts taking over. ""Whatever happens, do not stop recording.""
The atmosphere inside the Vance estate transformed instantly from a controlled production set into a pressure cooker of genuine suspense.
Julian stared at the tiny silver key in his palm. It was stamped with a unique six-digit code and the emblem of a private Swiss vault in downtown Manhattan.
""Lily,"" Julian said, dropping to one knee so he was at eye level with his daughter. His voice was no longer that of a scripted billionaire actor, but of a terrified father. ""Where did you get this?""
""Mommy hid it inside Barnaby's stuffing the night before the big ambulance came,"" Lily whispered, clutching her knees. ""She said if anyone ever tried to take her spot in our house, I had to give this key to the police.""
Victoria stepped back, her bravado evaporating. ""Okay, look, I’m an actress paid $8,000 a month to play a crazy stepmother on Facebook. I didn't sign up for actual corporate espionage or dead-wife secrets!""
""Quiet, Victoria,"" Clara commanded sharply, keeping the lens focused on Julian and Lily. ""Julian, look at me. If your late wife hid that key, it means her death wasn't just a sudden illness. It means she knew someone was targeting your family.""
Julian’s jaw tightened. ""Her medical records said heart failure. But three weeks before she passed, she was auditing the financial records of Vance Global Enterprise.""
Suddenly, the front doors of the estate burst open.
Three men in dark gray suits walked into the foyer without knocking. Leading them was Richard Sterling, Julian’s chief financial officer and long-time family legal trustee. Richard was a man with slicked-back silver hair, cold blue eyes, and a fake, blinding smile that Clara had hated since the day she took the job.
""Julian, my boy!"" Richard called out, his voice echoing in the vast space. ""I saw the live stream! The public relations team is panicking. You’ve got half a million people on Facebook calling for Child Protective Services because of this ridiculous video campaign! We need to terminate this social media experiment right now.""
Richard’s eyes darted down to Julian’s hand—specifically toward the small silver key.
Clara caught the movement on her monitor. She subtly adjusted her camera angle, zooming in on Richard’s right hand, which was nervously twitching against his leather briefcase.
""The social media campaign is generating thirty million impressions a week, Richard,"" Clara said, stepping boldly between Richard and Julian. ""It’s driving unprecedented public interest toward the Vance Pediatric Foundation. Why would you want to shut it down just as we’re about to hit peak engagement?""
Richard gave Clara a patronizing look. ""Because, young lady, this isn't Hollywood. This is a multi-billion-dollar corporation. Julian is making a mockery of his family name for cheap internet clicks!""
""Or maybe,"" Julian said, slowly standing up and placing the key firmly inside his inner jacket pocket, ""you’re worried about what these 'cheap internet clicks' might uncover, Richard.""
Richard’s polite smile vanished completely. ""What is that supposed to mean?""
""My wife left a vault key in Lily's toy,"" Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. ""And the only person who had total control over her personal estate documents before she died was you.""
The tension in the room snapped like a high-tension cable.
Richard stepped closer, his demeanor shifting from slick executive to predatory threat. ""Julian, you're exhausted. You're letting a hired videographer fill your head with conspiracy theories for her little internet show. Hand over the key. As trustee, I am legally required to inventory all physical assets belonging to the late Mrs. Vance.""
""Touch him and I hit 'Go Live' to our two million active followers,"" Clara warned, holding up her phone. The screen displayed the Facebook Live interface, hovering right over the glowing red broadcast button. ""Right now, we have a audience retention curve that marketers dream of. If I press this, five hundred thousand people will watch you try to strong-arm a grieving father in high definition.""
Richard stared at Clara, his eyes burning with pure malice. He realized he wasn't just fighting Julian; he was fighting a digital spotlight that he couldn't control or buy off.
""You think you're very clever, don't you, Clara?"" Richard said softly. ""Playing director in a house you don't belong in. But algorithms change, my dear. And so do fortunes.""
Richard turned on his heel and motioned for his security guards to follow him out. ""We will settle this in court tomorrow morning, Julian. Be prepared to lose custody of both your company... and your daughter.""
As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, Victoria collapsed onto a velvet sofa. ""I’m out. I am breaking contract. This is way too real.""
""No,"" Julian said, looking at Clara. ""We don't stop. Clara, can we use this? Can we turn the real truth into our story?""
Clara looked at the footage she had just captured—the raw, unfiltered fear, the hidden key, the dramatic confrontation with the corporate villain. It was the ultimate narrative hook, blending real-life mystery with high-stakes human emotion.
""We don't just use it,"" Clara said, a faint, determined smile touching her lips. ""We edit this into Chapter 2 right now. We post it with a pinned comment asking the audience to help us track down the location of that Swiss vault. We let the internet become our private investigative team.""

Julian walked over to Clara, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder. ""Thank you, Clara. For everything. I don't know what we would have done without you.""
""We’re in this together, Julian,"" Clara said, looking into his eyes. ""Now let's go finish this story and bring your family justice.""
