THE MILLION-DOLLAR LETTER / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Grave With No Name

The coordinates led to an abandoned mining property in Nevada.

Thomas had been there once in 1998.

Samuel used it to store records and cash.

Federal agents prepared an operation.

Adrian demanded Dante come alone.

Dante had no intention of obeying literally.

But he would appear alone.

Mabel insisted on going west with the team.

Dante refused.

She argued.

He refused again.

Then Rose interrupted.

“Stop telling my granddaughter what she can survive.”

Dante looked at Rose.

Rose looked back.

Mabel went.

They established a command post several miles from the mine.

Dante drove the final distance alone with a tracker hidden in his watch.

Adrian waited inside an old processing building.

Camille was alive.

Victor nearly collapsed when agents confirmed it through drone footage.

Adrian wanted the letter and ledger.

Dante brought copies.

Adrian immediately knew.

“You think I'm stupid?”

“No,” Dante said. “I think you're afraid.”

Adrian laughed.

“Of you?”

“Of a waitress.”

That wiped away his smile.

Dante continued.

“My father beat you after death. Mabel beat six experts with a coffee pot in her hand. And now you're standing in a dead mine trying to negotiate with photocopies.”

Adrian raised his gun.

At the command post, Mabel watched the drone feed.

Then she noticed something.

A second vehicle.

Moving toward the rear entrance.

Nobody had seen it.

She alerted Bell.

Agents repositioned.

The vehicle stopped.

A man stepped out.

Old.

Thin.

Mabel looked at Thomas.

Thomas went pale.

“Samuel.”

Samuel Vale was alive.

Again.

The Naples death had been another fabrication.

Who died twice.

Maybe Lorenzo's clue had never referred to a literal death.

It referred to a man who had erased himself twice.

Samuel entered the mine.

Adrian looked shocked to see him.

That told Dante everything.

Adrian wasn't in control.

Samuel was.

For decades, Sofia believed she commanded the network.

In reality, Samuel had manipulated both generations.

He had used Sofia's resentment.

Victor's fear.

Adrian's ambition.

Even Lorenzo's guilt.

Samuel wanted the ledger destroyed because it contained the one thing he couldn't erase.

Original handwritten financial entries.

Thomas's handwriting.

Samuel ordered Adrian to kill Dante.

Adrian hesitated.

Samuel raised his own weapon.

Federal agents moved.

The mine erupted into chaos.

Mabel heard shouting through the radio.

Then silence.

Long, unbearable silence.

Agent Bell finally reported.

Camille secure.

Adrian detained.

Samuel wounded but alive.

Dante—

No report.

Mabel ran before anyone could stop her.

She reached the building and found Dante sitting against a wall.

Blood covered his sleeve.

Her stomach dropped.

He looked up.

“It's not mine.”

She stopped.

Then hit him on the shoulder.

“You could have started with that.”

He laughed.

A real laugh.

Maybe his first in days.

Camille was reunited with Victor.

The microfilm had been sewn into the lining of a pendant Lorenzo gave her when she was a teenager.

She never knew.

Victor knew only that Lorenzo had trusted her with something.

That was why Adrian took her.

The microfilm contained copies of every account Samuel controlled.

The conspiracy was finished.

Or so they thought.

Samuel asked to speak to Mabel.

She refused at first.

Then Thomas said she should hear him.

Samuel sat handcuffed in an ambulance.

“You have Rose's eyes,” he said.

Mabel didn't respond.

“You think Lorenzo was a hero?”

“No.”

That surprised him.

“I think he was a man who waited too long to fix what he knew was wrong.”

Samuel smiled.

“Smart.”

“What do you want?”

“To tell you your million dollars is going to cost Dante much more.”

Mabel frowned.

Samuel leaned closer.

“The Moretti fortune was built partly with money that belonged to Thomas Quinn.”

Mabel went still.

Samuel claimed Thomas's financial models and early investments had generated millions before the warehouse fire.

Samuel stole them.

Lorenzo unknowingly absorbed several companies funded by that money.

If true, the Quinn family had a legal claim worth far more than one million dollars.

Mabel told Dante.

He didn't argue.

“Then we'll audit everything.”

“You could lose a fortune.”

“If it's yours, I should.”

Mabel stared at him.

The man everyone feared was willing to surrender millions because a waitress had translated a dead man's sentence correctly.

Thomas provided records.

Forensic accountants confirmed Samuel's claim.

The amount owed to Thomas Quinn's family, with decades of growth, was staggering.

Forty-eight million dollars.

Mabel nearly laughed when she heard it.

She had spent the previous month worrying about a dental bill.

Now attorneys were discussing eight figures.

Rose had the simplest response.

“Can I finally replace my refrigerator?”

Mabel laughed until she cried.

Dante insisted the money be returned.

Thomas accepted only under one condition.

A portion would establish a foundation for families harmed by the old criminal network.

Dante agreed.

For the first time, the story seemed to be moving toward daylight.

Then Agent Bell entered with new information.

Lorenzo's toxicology results had returned.

He had indeed been poisoned.

But the poison did not match the substance Sofia admitted ordering.

Dante stared at Bell.

“What are you saying?”

“Sofia tried to poison your father.”

Bell placed a report on the table.

“But her dose didn't kill him.”

Mabel felt the room turn cold.

Dante looked at the final line.

A second compound had been administered on the night Lorenzo died.

Only one person had been alone with him during that hour.

Dante read the name.

His face changed.

Mabel stepped beside him.

“Who?”

He turned the report toward her.

May you like

And Mabel saw the name of the last person she ever expected.

Rose Quinn.
