Chapter 3 - The Name Behind the Marriage

Daniel backed toward the garage wall.
Emily stepped in front of him.
"Who is Isabella's daughter?"
Her father said nothing.
Dominic did.
"Answer her."
Daniel looked at him with something between anger and fear.
"You don't understand what opening this will do."
Emily laughed once.
"Opening it? Dad, a man entered my honeymoon suite with a gun. Somebody planted evidence in your car. A woman I thought was dead just sent me a video. I think we're past keeping things closed."
Daniel looked at her.
Then at Dominic.
"Isabella had a daughter before she married Vittorio."
Dominic's face emptied.
Emily felt him go completely still beside her.
"What?"
"She was eighteen."
Dominic's voice dropped.
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Rebecca."
The silence afterward seemed endless.
Dominic turned slowly toward the photograph.
"Rebecca Vale is my sister?"
"Half sister."
"Does my father know?"
"Yes."
Dominic looked like he had been struck.
Emily had seen him angry.
Cold.
Threatening.
She had not seen him lost.
"Why wasn't she raised with us?"
Daniel leaned against the car.
"Because the Vales and Morettis were at war when Isabella became pregnant. Rebecca's father was a Vale heir. Vittorio married Isabella several years later."
"Why hide Rebecca?"
"To keep her alive."
Dominic stared at Daniel.
"And you knew this when you arranged our marriage."
"Yes."
Dominic stepped toward him.
Emily caught his arm.
"Don't."
He looked down at her hand.
Then stopped.
Daniel continued.
"Rebecca disappeared shortly before your mother's death."
"And everyone decided she was dead?"
"Everyone who needed to believe it."
Emily held up the photograph.
"My mother knew."
"They were friends."
"Friends?"
"More than that. They protected each other."
Emily thought of her quiet mother.
Her garden.
Her handwritten grocery lists.
Her habit of checking the locks twice at night.
Maybe those habits had come from somewhere after all.
"Why does Rebecca want me?"
Daniel hesitated.
Emily saw it.
"What aren't you telling me?"
"Elaine had something Rebecca needed."
"The ring?"
"No."
Dominic looked toward him.
"Then what?"
"A ledger."
Dominic's expression sharpened.
Daniel nodded.
"It contained financial records tying the Vale, Moretti, and Santoro families to businesses across three states. Not just criminal enterprises. Judges. Contractors. Banks. Politicians."
Emily frowned.
"And my mother had it?"
"For safekeeping."
"Where is it now?"
"I don't know."
Dominic almost smiled.
"You're lying."
Daniel met his eyes.
"Not this time."
Emily rubbed her forehead.
"Then why marry me into the Moretti family?"
"Because Carter Logistics was being deliberately destroyed."
Dominic turned.
"By whom?"
"I didn't know."
"Rebecca?"
"Maybe."
"That's a convenient answer."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"Your mother made me promise that if anything happened to her, I would protect you from the Vales."
"By marrying me to a Moretti?"
"By giving you a name powerful enough that nobody could simply make you disappear."
The sentence silenced her.
Her anger did not vanish.
But it changed shape.
"You could have told me."
"Would you have agreed?"
Emily did not answer.
Daniel nodded bitterly.
"Exactly."
Dominic crossed his arms.
"So you manipulated her."
"I protected her."
"Those aren't opposites."
Daniel stared at him.
"That's rich coming from you."
Emily glanced toward Dominic.
Daniel continued.
"You made her sign a marriage agreement that gives your family control over the emergency financing of my company."
"With protections for her ownership stake."
"Protections you can cancel."
"I haven't."
"Yet."
Dominic's face hardened.
Emily stepped between them.
"Stop talking about me like I'm a shipping container."
Both men went silent.
"Thank you."
Emily held up the burner phone.
"We have an address."
Dominic took it from her.
"And we're not going."
"We?"
"You're staying here."
She stared.
"Are you joking?"
"No."
"That would almost be adorable if it weren't so irritating."
"This isn't negotiable."
"Our entire marriage is apparently a negotiation."
"Emily."
"Rebecca asked for me."
"Which is exactly why you're not going."
She moved closer.
"Your sister asked for me too."
His jaw tightened at the word.
Sister.
"I heard."
"If we don't go, we learn nothing."
"We learn you're alive tomorrow morning."
"Maybe."
Dominic's eyes flashed.
"Don't say that."
She paused.
The intensity surprised both of them.
He looked away first.
Emily lowered her voice.
"You said this marriage meant nothing."
His gaze returned.
"Stop using that every time you want to walk into danger."
"You made it very memorable."
Dominic looked at the ring.
"Things changed."
"When?"
He didn't answer.
Emily knew.
The moment he stepped between her and the gun.
Maybe before that.
Maybe neither of them understood it yet.
Dominic called Marco.
Within an hour, they were in two vehicles moving toward the address.
Dominic insisted Emily ride beside him.
Daniel was in the second car.
The location led them to an abandoned lakeside chapel twenty miles away.
No lights.
No cars.
Dominic turned toward Emily.
"You stay in the vehicle until I clear it."
She sighed.
"Fine."
He stared suspiciously.
"What?"
"I agreed."
"Too quickly."
"I can be reasonable."
"I've known you for six months."
"Exactly. You barely know me."
He stepped out.
Emily waited thirty seconds.
Then followed.
Dominic turned around halfway to the chapel.
His expression said everything.
She raised both hands.
"Quietly."
He muttered something she chose not to hear.
Inside, the chapel smelled of dust and old wood.
Several candles burned near the altar.
No Rebecca.
Instead, an old tape recorder sat on a pew.
Emily approached.
Dominic caught her elbow.
"Don't touch it."
"It's a tape recorder."
"It could be wired."
"To what?"
"Anything."
She looked around.
"Your childhood sounds exhausting."
"It was."
Marco checked the device.
Safe.
Dominic pressed play.
Static.
Then Isabella Moretti's voice filled the chapel.
Dominic stopped moving.
He knew the voice instantly.
"My name is Isabella Moretti. If Dominic ever hears this, then I failed to stop what was coming."
His face changed.
Emily moved closer to him.
The recording continued.
"Rebecca is my daughter. Vittorio knows. Daniel knows. Elaine knows. None of them are responsible for what happened."
Dominic looked toward Daniel, who had just entered.
"Then who is?"
As if answering him, Isabella's recorded voice continued.
"The man responsible is Gabriel Santoro."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Dominic whispered the name.
"Gabriel."
Emily knew that one.
Everyone did.
Gabriel Santoro was dead.
At least officially.
A rival businessman killed in a boating accident fourteen years earlier.
Isabella's voice continued.
"Gabriel believes the three families betrayed him. He believes Rebecca holds the ledger that can rebuild everything he lost. If I'm dead, he will go after Elaine. If Elaine is dead, he will go after Emily."
Emily's blood went cold.
The recording clicked.
For several seconds, only static remained.
Then Isabella said one final thing.
"The ring is not the key."
Dominic looked down at Emily's hand.
"The woman wearing it is."
The recording stopped.
Emily stared at the machine.
"What does that mean?"
A light turned on behind the altar.
Everyone spun.
A hidden door stood open.
Rebecca Vale appeared.
Older than in the photograph.
Tired.
Alive.
She looked directly at Emily.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Dominic stared at her.
"My sister."
Rebecca's expression broke for a second.
"Yes."
He took one step.
She lifted a hand.
"Not yet."
Dominic stopped.
Rebecca looked toward Emily's ring.
"Take it off."
Emily did.
Rebecca turned it over and pressed a tiny latch inside the band.
A second compartment opened.
Smaller than the first.
Empty.
Rebecca's face changed.
"No."
Dominic moved closer.
"What?"
"It was here."
"What was?"
Rebecca stared at Daniel.
"The key."
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't take it."
Rebecca's eyes narrowed.
"Then Elaine did."
Emily stepped forward.
"My mother has been dead eleven years."
Rebecca looked at her.
"Then whatever she hid, she hid for you."
"Where?"
Rebecca glanced toward Emily's wedding dress.
Then toward the small pearl bracelet around her wrist.
Her expression changed.
"That bracelet."
Emily touched it.
"My mother's."
"Give it to me."
Emily unclasped it.
Rebecca turned the bracelet over.
On the silver clasp was a tiny engraved number.
7-1-9.
The same numbers from the black envelope.
Rebecca inhaled sharply.
"Your mother wasn't hiding the ledger."
She pressed the clasp.
It opened.
A tiny brass key dropped into her palm.
Dominic looked at it.
"What does it open?"
Rebecca looked at Emily.
"Something your mother left in a bank vault."
Emily's phone rang.
Her father's office number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A woman was crying.
Emily recognized her father's longtime assistant.
"Emily, someone came into Carter Logistics."
Emily straightened.
"What happened?"
"They took everything from your mother's old office."
"What do you mean everything?"
"Files. Photographs. The wall safe."
Emily looked at Rebecca.
Then the assistant whispered, "They left something for you."
"What?"
"A photograph."
"Of what?"
The woman hesitated.
"Your mother."
Emily's hand tightened around the phone.
"That's impossible."
"It was taken yesterday."
No one spoke.
Emily felt Dominic move closer beside her.
"Are you sure?"
"Emily..."
May you like
The assistant's voice broke.
"Your mother is alive."
