Chapter 6 - The Voice From the Dead

Marco stared at the screen.
Luca saw the number.
His face changed instantly.
"No."
Victor stood.
"Answer it."
Luca snatched the phone.
He put it on speaker.
Silence.
Then a woman's voice.
Older recording quality.
Warm.
Familiar.
Luca's mother.
"If you're hearing this, Victor came back."
Luca sat down.
Elena reached for his hand.
He let her.
The recording continued.
"My son, I know what this will feel like. You will want to hate us. You may deserve to."
Victor looked away.
"But before you decide what kind of man your father is, know this: he disappeared because I asked him to."
Luca closed his eyes.
Elena squeezed his hand.
"I discovered someone had entered our home twice while you slept. They weren't there to steal. They were measuring how close they could get to you."
Luca opened his eyes.
Victor's face had broken.
"I told Victor that if staying dead kept you alive, then he had to stay dead."
The recording continued.
"I made him promise not to return until the council exposed itself."
A pause.
"And if Elena Marlowe is with you, trust her. Her mother saved all of us."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Luca looked at Victor.
"You kept this for fourteen years?"
Victor shook his head.
"Your mother recorded several messages. I didn't know when they'd be delivered."
Daniel examined Marco's phone.
"Scheduled dead-drop system."
Luca stood.
"We're going to Pier 19."
Victor nodded.
"I'll take the archive."
"No."
"It's me they want."
"They asked for Elena."
"Which is why she stays here."
Elena stood.
"Stop deciding where I stay."
Luca turned.
"This isn't dinner anymore."
"It was never dinner."
"Elena."
"They can't open the archive without me."
"Exactly."
"If I don't go, they kill everyone."
"I'll find another way."
"In how much time?"
He didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
"Teresa is there. Rosa is there. Your cousins are there."
"So I trade you?"
"No."
"You want me to walk you into a hostage exchange."
"I want you to trust me."
His expression cracked.
"I do trust you."
"Then understand why I'm going."
"Because you're brave?"
"Because my mother built this thing so people like them couldn't own everyone through fear."
Victor watched her.
She continued.
"If I stay here because I'm afraid, they already win."
Luca looked at her for a long time.
Then he nodded once.
"You stay beside me."
"Fine."
"You do exactly what Marco says."
"Fine."
"If I tell you run—"
"I run."
Victor smiled faintly.
Luca glared.
"What?"
"Nothing."
They planned for forty minutes.
The complete archive was copied to three encrypted drives.
One went with Victor.
One stayed with Daniel.
One was sent to an attorney outside New York with instructions for automatic release.
Daniel contacted two federal agents Victor had verified as clean.
Elena recorded a timed authorization.
If she didn't cancel it within three hours, every archive file would go to journalists, prosecutors, and multiple watchdog organizations.
Luca looked at the system.
"Your mother would've liked you."
Elena smiled sadly.
"I hope so."
They reached Pier 19 at 2:13 a.m.
Rain had started.
Not dramatic.
Just cold, thin rain blowing from the river.
The warehouse doors were open.
Lights inside.
Luca entered first.
Elena beside him.
Victor behind.
Marco and security hidden outside.
The masked man stood on a metal platform.
Hostages sat below.
Teresa.
Rosa.
Carlo.
Others.
Alive.
Elena exhaled.
The man spoke.
"Victor."
Victor stepped forward.
"I brought it."
"Elena?"
"I'm here."
The man's gaze settled on her.
"You look like your mother."
Elena felt ice move through her.
"You knew her."
"I knew what she cost us."
Luca asked, "Who are you?"
The man removed his mask.
Dominic inhaled sharply from among the hostages.
Victor whispered, "Samuel."
Elena stared.
Judge Samuel Kent.
Foundation board member.
The man who had known her since childhood.
The man who had sent flowers on her birthday.
The man who had attended her mother's funeral.
Samuel smiled.
"Hello, Elena."
Her stomach turned.
"You."
He nodded.
"The board appointments gave me access to the foundation."
"You stole the money."
"Daniel did most of that."
Daniel wasn't there.
Samuel didn't know he had changed sides.
Elena kept her expression neutral.
"You attacked me."
"I ordered it."
Luca's hands curled.
Samuel noticed.
"Careful."
One of his men placed a gun against Teresa's head.
Luca stopped.
Elena asked, "Why did you hurt my mother?"
Samuel smiled.
"Because she was stubborn."
Victor surged forward.
Luca caught him.
Samuel laughed.
"Still emotional after all these years."
Elena's eyes filled.
"You tortured her."
"I questioned her."
"You strangled her."
"She survived."
"For two years."
Samuel's smile faded slightly.
"Her illness wasn't my doing."
Elena believed that.
Strangely, she did.
Samuel wanted credit for his cruelty.
He wouldn't deny something he hadn't done.
"Why steal fourteen million?"
"To find the authentication path."
"And when I discovered it?"
"You became inconvenient."
"Why didn't you kill me?"
Samuel's smile returned.
"Because we needed your voice."
Luca looked at Elena.
That explained the garage.
The attacker wasn't trying to murder her.
He was trying to terrify her into surrendering files.
Samuel held out one hand.
"The drive."
Victor lifted it.
"Release them first."
Samuel laughed.
"You taught me better than that."
Victor's expression changed.
Elena caught it.
Samuel noticed too late.
"You were one of my father's men," Luca said.
Samuel looked at him.
"His lawyer."
"His friend."
"Friendship is a word wealthy men use when interests align."
Victor asked, "Was it you?"
Samuel smiled.
"The crash?"
Luca stepped forward.
"Answer."
Samuel nodded.
"Yes."
Victor closed his eyes.
Luca seemed almost relieved.
After fourteen years, the question finally had a face.
Samuel continued.
"Victor wanted to become legitimate. He thought he could simply shut doors that made other men rich."
"So you killed him."
"Tried."
"And my mother?"
"I never touched your mother."
"Elena's?"
Samuel looked at Elena.
"Different matter."
Luca moved.
Gunfire hit the ceiling.
Everyone froze.
Samuel shouted, "One more step!"
Luca stopped.
Elena whispered, "Give him the drive."
Victor looked at her.
She nodded.
He understood.
Victor tossed it.
Samuel caught it.
He connected it to a laptop.
"Elena."
She approached.
Luca grabbed her wrist.
She looked back.
Trust me.
She didn't say it.
He saw it anyway.
He released her.
Samuel moved the microphone toward her.
"Read the authorization phrase."
Elena stared at the screen.
The prompt waited.
She leaned forward.
"Kindness without courage is only intention."
ACCESS GRANTED.
Samuel smiled.
He opened the directory.
Then stopped.
Every folder displayed the same message.
ARCHIVE RELEASED.
His face changed.
"What did you do?"
Elena stepped back.
"I learned from my mother."
Samuel slammed keys.
Nothing changed.
"Where is it?"
"Everywhere."
Luca smiled.
For the first time that night, genuinely.
Samuel pulled a gun.
Luca moved in front of Elena.
Samuel aimed.
Before he could fire, the warehouse lights died.
Marco.
Gunshots erupted from the far side.
Luca pulled Elena behind a steel column.
Victor ran toward the hostages.
Samuel's men scattered.
Federal agents entered through the rear.
"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Elena covered her ears.
Luca shielded her with his body.
Carlo tackled the guard holding Teresa.
Matteo rushed from the side entrance.
Chaos.
Then Samuel appeared around the column.
Gun raised.
Pointed at Luca.
Elena saw him first.
"Luca!"
Luca turned.
A shot cracked.
Victor stepped between them.
He fell.
Luca caught him.
Samuel ran.
Marco chased.
Elena dropped beside Victor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
"Luca."
"I'm here."
Victor struggled to breathe.
"Don't become me."
"Stop talking."
"Listen."
"You're not dying."
Victor almost smiled.
"Still giving orders."
Luca pressed both hands against the wound.
Elena called for a medic.
Victor whispered, "Live the life I couldn't."
Then his eyes closed.
"Victor!"
Medics rushed in.
They pulled Luca away.
Victor was carried toward an ambulance.
Elena held Luca as he stood frozen in the rain.
Marco returned.
Alone.
Luca looked at him.
"Samuel?"
Marco shook his head.
"Escaped through the river exit."
Luca's face hardened.
A federal agent approached.
"We'll find him."
Luca didn't answer.
Elena's phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Unknown number.
One photograph.
Her apartment door.
Taken seconds ago.
Below it, Samuel had written:
YOU RELEASED MY SECRETS.
NOW I'LL RELEASE YOURS.
A second message arrived before she could speak.
ASK LUCA WHAT HE KNEW ABOUT YOUR MOTHER BEFORE TONIGHT.
Elena slowly raised her eyes toward him.
May you like
He saw the screen.
And for the first time all night, Luca looked afraid of her question.
