Chapter 1 - The Question That Silenced the Room

Elena jerked backward as Luca touched the loose fabric at her shoulder and whispered, "Who did this to you?"
The most powerful man in the room stared at the broken silver clasp hanging from her lavender dress.
Three letters had been scratched into its back.
V.D.S.
Luca stopped looking at Elena.
He looked at his family.
The crystal chandelier above the DeSantis dining table still glittered as if nothing had happened.
Twenty people had been talking less than ten seconds earlier.
Now Elena could hear the faint ticking of the antique clock across the room.
Luca DeSantis stood so close she could smell the clean cedar scent of his cologne. He was tall enough that she had to tilt her chin to meet his eyes. Dark hair had been combed straight back from his forehead, and tattoos disappeared beneath the collar of his black double-breasted jacket.
His expression frightened her more than shouting would have.
He wasn't shouting.
He wasn't moving.
He was simply staring at the marks on her neck.
"Elena."
His voice was quiet.
She swallowed.
"I'm all right."
That was the lie she had practiced.
She had repeated it in the mirror that afternoon.
I'm all right.
Nothing happened.
I slipped.
The marks will disappear.
Nobody needs to know.
She had believed she could survive one family dinner without anyone noticing.
She had forgotten that Luca noticed everything.
His fingers released the lavender fabric immediately.
He had only moved it far enough to see what she had been trying to cover.
Four dark marks ran beneath her left ear and disappeared toward her shoulder.
Finger-shaped.
Impossible to mistake once exposed.
Elena pulled the fabric back.
Luca caught her wrist before she could hide them again.
Not hard.
Just enough to stop her.
"Don't."
Her eyes went to his hand.
He immediately let her go.
Something changed in his face.
Regret.
Then fury.
But not fury at her.
"Who put those marks on your neck?"
Nobody at the table moved.
Elena looked past him.
The DeSantis family had gathered for Dominic DeSantis's seventieth birthday.
Dominic sat at the head of the table, gray-haired and rigid in a charcoal suit. He was Luca's uncle and one of the few men in New York who spoke to Luca without hesitation.
Tonight, even Dominic looked uneasy.
Elena's gaze moved farther down the table.
Carlo DeSantis was staring at his untouched plate.
Carlo was Dominic's youngest son, thirty-two years old, charming in public and almost permanently smiling.
He wasn't smiling now.
Beside him sat his older brother Matteo.
Matteo watched Elena.
Then Luca.
Then Elena again.
Luca noticed.
His head turned slightly.
"Which one of you knows what happened?"
No one answered.
Elena's pulse hammered.
"Luca."
He turned back to her.
"Please."
"Please what?"
"Not here."
His eyes hardened.
"Why?"
She couldn't answer.
Because twenty witnesses were sitting around them.
Because one of those witnesses had watched what happened.
Because another one had threatened her afterward.
Because the person responsible had told her exactly what would happen if Luca found out.
Luca bent closer.
His voice dropped.
"Are you afraid of me?"
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"Are you afraid of someone in this room?"
She stopped breathing.
That was enough.
Luca slowly straightened.
Carlo finally spoke.
"This is ridiculous."
Every eye shifted toward him.
Carlo lifted both hands.
"She probably bumped into something."
Luca stared at him.
"Four times?"
Carlo's face tightened.
"Come on, Luca."
Luca stepped away from Elena.
That somehow made the room feel more dangerous.
"Stand up."
Carlo laughed once.
Nobody joined him.
"What?"
"I said stand up."
Dominic placed his napkin on the table.
"Luca."
Luca didn't look at him.
"Not now, Uncle."
The words were respectful.
The tone wasn't negotiable.
Carlo pushed back his chair.
"You're seriously going to interrogate me during my father's birthday dinner because your girlfriend has a bruise?"
Elena flinched.
Luca saw it.
So did Carlo.
And for one terrible second, Carlo's face changed.
Satisfaction.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But Luca caught it.
He always did.
Luca moved so quickly that Elena didn't understand what was happening until he was standing directly in front of Carlo.
Carlo's confidence vanished.
Luca didn't touch him.
"Say that again."
Carlo looked around the table.
"Say what?"
"The part where you enjoyed frightening her."
"I didn't."
"You smiled."
Carlo glanced at Elena.
Bad decision.
Luca moved between them.
"Look at me."
Carlo obeyed.
Dominic rose.
"Enough."
Luca finally turned.
Dominic's face had gone pale.
"There's something you need to understand."
Those were exactly the words Elena had feared.
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Then explain it."
Dominic glanced around the table.
Several relatives lowered their eyes.
His wife, Teresa, pressed one hand against her mouth.
Matteo looked angry rather than afraid.
Carlo suddenly looked desperate.
Elena felt the room shrinking around her.
Dominic spoke carefully.
"Not everything that happened involved Elena."
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
Dominic hesitated.
Elena whispered, "Don't."
Everyone looked at her.
Dominic stopped.
Luca turned.
"Don't what?"
Elena had spent three days trying to protect him.
Not because Luca couldn't protect himself.
That was the problem.
Luca could destroy everyone responsible.
And if he learned what the marks really meant, someone would die.
Maybe several people.
Maybe Luca himself.
She had promised herself she wouldn't be the reason.
"I fell."
Luca looked at her for several seconds.
Then he picked up the silver clasp from the table.
The clasp had come loose when he'd moved the fabric.
He held it between two tattooed fingers.
"Did you scratch these letters onto this?"
Elena's stomach dropped.
She hadn't known the letters were there.
"No."
Luca turned the clasp.
V.D.S.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Matteo whispered something under his breath.
Carlo took half a step backward.
Luca noticed all three reactions.
"Interesting."
Dominic said, "Luca, give me the clasp."
"No."
"It belongs to this family."
Luca looked at him.
"Apparently."
Elena stared at the letters.
V.D.S.
"What do they mean?"
Nobody answered her.
That scared her more than anything else.
She looked at Luca.
He was still staring at Dominic.
"Uncle?"
Dominic picked up his wineglass.
His hand shook.
Elena had never seen Dominic DeSantis's hand shake.
"It is an old family marking."
"For what?"
"Property."
Luca's expression became unreadable.
Elena felt cold.
"Property?"
Dominic looked at her with something that resembled shame.
"Not people."
Luca's voice sharpened.
"Choose your next words carefully."
Dominic nodded.
"Documents. Storage facilities. Accounts. Things connected to your grandfather's organization."
Luca examined the clasp.
"V.D.S."
"Vault DeSantis."
Matteo shook his head immediately.
"No."
Dominic looked at his oldest son.
Matteo stood.
"Don't lie to him."
Carlo snapped, "Sit down."
Matteo ignored him.
Luca's gaze settled on Matteo.
"Talk."
Matteo looked at Elena.
"I'm sorry."
Her heart stumbled.
"For what?"
"I should've stopped it earlier."
Luca went completely still.
Elena whispered, "Stopped what?"
Carlo grabbed Matteo's arm.
"Shut up."
Matteo shoved him away.
That single movement shattered whatever illusion of civility remained.
Chairs scraped.
Teresa gasped.
Several guests stood.
Luca's voice cut through all of them.
"Sit."
Everyone froze.
"All of you."
One by one, they sat again.
Everyone except Matteo.
Luca nodded at him.
"Continue."
Matteo swallowed.
"Three weeks ago, I found out Carlo had been using one of the old family companies."
Carlo slammed his palm against the table.
"That's a lie."
Matteo raised his voice.
"To move money."
Dominic closed his eyes.
Luca asked, "Whose money?"
Matteo looked at Elena.
Her stomach twisted.
"My father's charity foundation."
Elena blinked.
The Marlowe Foundation had been created after her mother's death.
It funded shelters for women escaping domestic violence.
Elena had managed it for six years.
"That's impossible."
Matteo shook his head.
"It isn't."
"I approve every transfer."
"Not the transfers Carlo made."
Carlo laughed.
"Listen to him. He's been jealous of me since we were kids."
Matteo ignored him.
"Someone created a duplicate authorization system."
Elena looked at Luca.
He was already thinking ahead.
"How much?"
Matteo answered.
"Fourteen million."
The room seemed to tilt.
Elena gripped the back of her chair.
"No."
Fourteen million dollars.
Money meant for shelters.
Emergency housing.
Legal aid.
Children.
She stared at Carlo.
"You stole from my foundation?"
Carlo's face reddened.
"I didn't steal anything."
Luca turned toward Elena.
"Is that why you were hurt?"
She couldn't answer.
His expression changed.
"Elena."
She stared at the floor.
Three nights earlier, she had found an unauthorized ledger inside her office computer.
She had copied the files.
Before she could leave the building, a man had entered the parking garage.
He had grabbed her from behind.
One forearm around her chest.
One hand around her throat.
He had whispered into her ear.
Delete the files.
Forget what you saw.
Or Luca dies first.
She never saw his face.
But she'd recognized something.
A ring.
Black stone.
Silver D.
A DeSantis family ring.
She had told herself it could belong to dozens of men.
Now she looked around the dining table.
Six men wore them.
Carlo was one.
Matteo was another.
Dominic wore the oldest version.
And three senior associates sat farther down the table.
Luca saw where her eyes went.
He looked at the rings.
Then back at her.
"He wore one."
Elena said nothing.
Luca took that as confirmation.
Carlo moved toward the door.
Luca spoke without turning.
"Don't."
Carlo stopped.
"I need air."
"No one leaves."
"This is insane."
Luca faced the table.
His voice remained calm.
"Nobody leaves this room until Elena tells me the truth."
Carlo laughed again.
But fear had entered his eyes.
"You're holding your own family hostage."
"No."
Luca slipped the broken clasp into his pocket.
"I'm asking them to remain for dinner."
Nobody smiled.
Elena touched his sleeve.
"Luca."
He looked at her.
"We need to talk privately."
He studied her face.
Then nodded.
"Library."
Dominic immediately said, "No."
Luca looked at him.
That one word had been too fast.
Too frightened.
"Why not?"
Dominic didn't answer.
Matteo slowly turned toward his father.
Carlo's face lost color.
Elena saw it.
So did Luca.
Luca reached into his jacket and removed his phone.
He called someone.
"Marco."
Pause.
"Lock the exterior doors. Nobody leaves."
Another pause.
"And send two men to the library."
Dominic stepped forward.
"Luca, listen to me."
Luca ended the call.
"You had your chance."
He took Elena's hand.
She followed him across the dining room.
Nobody tried to stop them.
At the double doors, Elena glanced back.
Dominic was staring at her.
Not angrily.
Desperately.
He mouthed something.
She couldn't understand it.
Luca opened the door.
They walked into the corridor.
The noise of the dining room disappeared behind them.
Elena pulled her hand away.
"Luca, you can't do this."
"Do what?"
"Turn your family against itself."
"My family managed that without my help."
"What if Carlo didn't touch me?"
"Then Carlo has nothing to fear."
She stopped walking.
"You don't understand."
He turned.
"Then make me understand."
Elena's eyes burned.
"If I tell you what happened, you'll do something you can't undo."
His expression softened.
"Elena."
"You think I don't know you?"
"I'm not going to hurt you."
"I'm not afraid you'll hurt me."
Silence.
That was the first time she had said it aloud.
Luca stepped closer.
"Who are you afraid I'll hurt?"
She looked toward the library doors at the far end of the hall.
"I don't know."
He frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It will."
They approached the library.
Two of Luca's men were already waiting.
Marco, his security chief, stood beside the door.
But something was wrong.
His gun was drawn.
Luca immediately moved Elena behind him.
"What happened?"
Marco pointed toward the door.
"It was locked when we arrived."
Luca looked at the keyhole.
"And?"
Marco's expression tightened.
"Then someone unlocked it."
From inside.
Elena felt Luca's hand close around hers.
A faint sound came from the other side of the door.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Coming closer.
The handle began to turn.
Marco raised his weapon.
Luca pushed Elena farther behind him.
May you like
The library door opened.
And someone inside whispered Elena's name.
