Chapter 5 - The Name Hidden Inside the Calendar

Matteo wanted me left at the townhouse.

I refused.

He argued for exactly thirty seconds.

Then Sofia ended it.

“Matteo, if you waste another minute trying to control that woman, I will personally throw you into the car.”

I liked Sofia.

Matteo did not respond.

We returned to the office under heavier security.

This time, nobody spoke about feelings.

The city outside might as well not have existed.

Everything had narrowed to one fact.

Gabriel was trapped inside Matteo's headquarters with Carlo.

Or he had been.

By the time we arrived, the twenty-seventh floor was empty.

The conference room door stood open.

A chair lay on its side.

Gabriel's phone sat on the floor.

No blood.

No Gabriel.

No Carlo.

Luca checked cameras.

Two figures had entered the service elevator.

The camera inside had been disabled.

Of course.

“They could be anywhere in the building,” Luca said.

Matteo looked at me.

“You stay here.”

I didn't argue this time.

Not because he was right.

Because I had another idea.

“Give me Marcus.”

The systems engineer came over.

“What do you need?”

“The original calendar.”

“Which version?”

“The earliest copy you can recover. Before the forged appointments started.”

He began searching backups.

Matteo paused near the door.

“What are you thinking?”

“The fake entries started fourteen months ago. But whoever built this probably tested the system before that.”

Marcus looked up.

“She's right.”

Matteo stayed.

Security teams searched without him.

Marcus restored versions.

Fifteen months.

Sixteen.

Seventeen.

Then:

“I found something.”

An appointment appeared seventeen months earlier.

Deleted less than sixty seconds after creation.

3:10 P.M. — V.H. / C.V. / DP.

Victor Hale.

Carlo Venti.

Daniel Pike.

Three names.

Three men already connected.

My pulse quickened.

“Where?”

“No location.”

“Anything else?”

Marcus opened the metadata.

The appointment had been created from my account.

But not by me.

Seventeen months ago.

Before Victor was fired.

Before the shadow profile officially existed.

“That was the test,” I said.

Marcus nodded.

“Probably.”

Matteo stared at the names.

“So Carlo is involved.”

“Yes,” I said. “But maybe he isn't the top.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Because the appointment lists him.”

“So?”

“The person creating the secret system wouldn't need to schedule a meeting with himself using stolen access.”

Matteo went quiet.

Marcus looked at me.

“You think someone else created it.”

“Yes.”

A fourth person.

Someone using my account to schedule Victor, Carlo and Daniel.

Someone above them.

Someone whose name never appeared because they didn't need to write it down.

We searched deleted entries.

More fragments emerged.

Initials.

Transfer numbers.

Addresses.

One recurring notation:

N.V.

Nicholas Vale.

But every time Nicholas appeared, the entry used a question mark.

N.V.?

As if the people involved weren't sure whether he could be trusted.

That weakened the theory that Nicholas was leading the operation.

“What did Nicholas know?” I asked Matteo.

“Everything legal.”

“Family?”

“Most.”

“Security?”

“Enough.”

“Your father's original companies?”

“All of them.”

I turned to Sofia, who had insisted on returning with us.

“Did Nicholas work directly for your husband?”

“For twenty-two years.”

“And who worked with Nicholas?”

“Half the executive floor at one time or another.”

“Who did he trust most?”

Sofia considered.

Then her face changed.

“Rosa.”

The house manager?

I stared.

“Rosa Morales?”

“She wasn't always our house manager.”

Matteo looked at his mother.

“What do you mean?”

Sofia frowned.

“You know this.”

“No.”

“She was your father's records administrator.”

Matteo went still.

“Before he died?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Eleven years.”

I remembered Rosa standing beside Sofia.

Quiet.

Invisible.

Someone everyone trusted.

Someone living inside Matteo's home.

Someone who could use the residential network without triggering suspicion.

“Where is Rosa now?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Because we had left her at the townhouse.

With Sofia's staff.

Matteo called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Luca called the guard outside.

He picked up.

Rosa had left twenty minutes earlier.

Said Sofia needed medication from the pharmacy.

No one questioned her.

“Find her,” Matteo said.

Marcus searched her personnel records.

Nothing unusual.

Then I noticed her employment start date.

Twenty-seven years earlier.

She had worked for Matteo's father before Matteo entered the business.

She knew the family before Gabriel was old enough to understand it.

Why betray them now?

“Financial records,” I said.

Marcus checked.

Salary.

Pension.

No suspicious transfers.

I thought about motive.

Money wasn't always money.

Sometimes it was grievance.

“Did your father ever fire someone because of Rosa?”

Matteo looked at Sofia.

She answered slowly.

“Her husband.”

There it was.

“What happened?”

“Thomas Morales ran one of the shipping divisions. There was an investigation. Missing inventory.”

“Did he steal?”

“We believed so.”

“Believed?”

Sofia's eyes hardened.

“He confessed.”

“What happened afterward?”

“He went to prison.”

“How long?”

“Five years.”

“And after?”

Sofia looked down.

“He died six months after release.”

The room went quiet.

Rosa had remained with the family.

For decades.

That didn't make sense.

Unless staying had been the point.

Marcus found an archived employee file for Thomas Morales.

One listed relative besides Rosa.

A son.

Different last name.

Victor Hale.

Everything stopped.

“Victor is Rosa's son?” Matteo asked.

Sofia stared.

“I never knew.”

The whole structure snapped into focus.

Victor had internal access.

Carlo controlled security.

Daniel worked under him.

Rosa had access to the house.

One family threaded through Matteo's world.

But still—

Someone had given them legal knowledge.

Nicholas?

Or someone using Nicholas's identity too?

A secure line rang.

Matteo answered.

Nicholas.

“Where are you?” Matteo demanded.

“In my office.”

“You left.”

“Because someone sent me a copy of a trust amendment with my company's name on it.”

“You knew?”

“I know now.”

“Who sent it?”

“Elena.”

I stared.

“I did not.”

“I assumed you didn't.”

Nicholas continued.

“Matteo, listen carefully. The amendment isn't designed to give my company control.”

“Then what?”

“It gives Vale Strategic Counsel authority for seventy-two hours.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust agreement requires a temporary administrator before voting control can be reassigned.”

“To whom?”

“That page was removed.”

My stomach sank.

Another layer.

“Can you recover it?”

“I already did.”

Matteo gripped the phone.

“Name.”

Nicholas went silent.

Then:

“Gabriel Duca.”

Nobody breathed.

The forged documents would transfer Matteo's authority to his brother.

Gabriel.

If successful, he would appear to be the traitor.

And perhaps Gabriel didn't even know.

“Where are you?” Matteo asked again.

Nicholas gave an address.

“Stay there.”

“I intend to.”

The line ended.

I looked at the calendar.

Gabriel's name never appeared.

That was deliberate.

Every trail pointed toward him without writing him down.

His ring.

His presence at the house.

His message to me.

Now the trust transfer.

Someone wanted Matteo to destroy his own brother before finding the truth.

Matteo understood.

His face changed.

“My father did that.”

“What?”

“When we were young. If he suspected disloyalty, he made people turn on each other.”

Sofia looked away.

Matteo continued.

“He used false information. Different stories. Watched who accused whom.”

I said quietly, “Someone learned from him.”

Rosa had worked beside Matteo's father for decades.

Maybe she had learned everything.

Then Marcus shouted.

“Found them.”

A camera came online.

Underground loading level.

Gabriel sat in a chair.

Hands tied.

Alive.

Carlo stood behind him.

Daniel Pike stood near a black SUV.

And Rosa Morales stood directly in front of the camera.

She wasn't hiding anymore.

She looked up at the lens.

Then lifted a phone.

Matteo's rang.

He answered.

Rosa's voice came through.

“Bring Elena.”

Matteo's face hardened.

“No.”

“Then Gabriel stays with me.”

“You want me.”

“No, Matteo.”

A pause.

“I want the woman whose calendar can prove you never authorized any of this.”

I understood.

They needed me.

Not dead.

Not yet.

They needed my verification.

One final signature.

Matteo said, “You'll never get it.”

Rosa laughed quietly.

“I already have her signature.”

“Then why do you need Elena?”

Rosa looked directly into the camera.

“Because signatures can be questioned.”

My blood went cold.

“Witnesses can't.”

Then another figure stepped into the camera frame behind Rosa.

An elderly man.

Gray hair.

Walnut cane.

Nicholas Vale.

But Nicholas had just told us he was across town.

May you like

Matteo stared at the screen.

And the man beside Rosa smiled.
