Chapter 6 - The Last Lie

Ethan wasn't dead.

That was the first piece of good news.

Police found him unconscious in his apartment after a neighbor reported noise.

He had been struck from behind.

His computer was gone.

But the people who attacked him made the same mistake Dustin and Shane had made repeatedly.

They assumed destroying one copy destroyed the truth.

Ethan had backups.

The payment recipient was a private investigator named Raymond Pike.

Shane had hired Pike years earlier to collect information on people who could threaten his schemes.

Athletes.

Former partners.

Witnesses.

Families.

My name appeared because of Ethan.

Emily’s because of Dustin.

The seventy-five thousand dollars represented years of payments, not a single job.

Pike had monitored dozens of people.

Police arrested him forty-eight hours later.

He cooperated quickly.

Men who make careers selling secrets often become enthusiastic about selling one more when prison becomes possible.

Pike provided records.

Messages.

Photographs.

Instructions from Shane.

And one fact that finally connected everything.

Dustin had known Emily discovered the financial scheme before she arrived at the gym.

Pike had access to a compromised account and saw messages she sent Natalie while trying to contact her.

Dustin wasn't surprised when Emily confronted him.

He was prepared.

That explained Shane arriving after the assault.

It explained the missing hard drive.

It explained why threats began immediately afterward.

This had never been an argument that “got out of control.”

Dustin had been trying to frighten Emily into silence.

The realization devastated her.

But it also freed her from one question she had asked herself repeatedly.

What did I do to make him so angry?

Nothing.

She had discovered something.

He chose violence.

The responsibility was his.

Months after the night at the gym, Dustin accepted responsibility in court as part of resolving the charges against him.

Shane faced far more serious consequences from the larger investigation.

Multiple fraud-related charges and witness intimidation allegations followed.

Pike became a cooperating witness.

Rachel’s gym recovered some stolen money.

The investors sued for the rest.

Marcus testified.

Tyler testified.

Natalie testified.

Cole Brennan returned.

And Emily walked into court without holding my arm.

That mattered to me.

I sat behind her.

She spoke clearly.

She described the hospital.

The threats.

The fear.

Then she said something I hadn't heard before.

“The worst thing Dustin took from me wasn't physical safety. It was my trust in my own judgment. Every time something happened, he convinced me I remembered it wrong. When I finally saw myself on that security video, I realized I wasn't crazy. I had been telling myself the truth the entire time.”

Dustin stared at the table.

Emily continued.

“I don't hate him.”

His head lifted.

“I don't forgive him either. Maybe someday forgiveness will mean something different to me. But today I don't need either feeling. I only need him to stop having power over my decisions.”

I looked down.

For fifteen years, I had taught Marines what strength looked like.

My daughter had just taught me another version.

After court, reporters waited outside.

Emily declined interviews.

We went for burgers instead.

She ordered dessert.

I noticed.

She noticed me noticing.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You're smiling.”

“I like pie.”

“You hate cherry pie.”

“I’m evolving.”

She laughed.

For a few hours, life felt ordinary.

Then my phone rang.

Ethan.

He had recovered.

“I found one more thing.”

My heart sank.

“Please tell me it's a coupon.”

“No.”

“Worth trying.”

“Shane kept a second ledger.”

“For what?”

“Insurance.”

Blackmail material.

Not just financial records.

Videos.

Audio.

Private information.

Ethan believed Shane intended to use it against witnesses if the case collapsed.

Most had been recovered.

One file remained missing.

Its label was:

EMILY MERCER — FINAL.

I told Emily.

She closed her eyes.

“Can this just end?”

“Yes.”

“You don't know that.”

“No. But we’re going to finish it the right way.”

The police traced the file to an old storage unit rented under one of Shane’s shell companies.

They obtained authority to search it.

Emily was not present.

Neither was I.

We waited.

Hours.

Then the detective called.

They found the drive.

The “final” file was not compromising material about Emily.

It was an instruction file.

Shane had ordered Pike to gather enough information to discredit her if she ever exposed Dustin.

There were drafts of anonymous posts.

Fake accusations.

Manipulated photographs that had never been released.

A complete character-assassination plan.

Emily stared at the wall when I told her.

Then she asked:

“Did they find everything?”

“They think so.”

“Think?”

“Investigations don't come with perfect certainty.”

She sighed.

“I hate that.”

“So do I.”

That night she stayed at my house.

Not because she was frightened.

Because we had planned breakfast.

Around midnight, I heard movement downstairs.

I found Emily sitting on the couch.

“Can't sleep?”

“No.”

I sat beside her.

After a while she said:

“You know what I keep thinking about?”

“What?”

“The gym.”

I knew.

“You wanted to hit him.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because you asked me not to.”

“That’s all?”

“No.”

I looked at my hands.

“I spent years teaching people that the hardest fight to win is sometimes the one where your ego wants action and your judgment says wait.”

She leaned against the couch.

“I’m glad you didn't.”

“So am I.”

A car pulled into the driveway.

Headlights crossed the wall.

I checked the clock.

12:41 a.m.

Nobody should have been coming.

Emily sat upright.

A door closed outside.

Then footsteps approached the porch.

I moved toward the window.

A man stood under the light.

Gray jacket.

Hands visible.

He looked directly at the house.

Emily came behind me.

“Who is that?”

I knew his face.

I had seen it in Shane’s photographs.

Raymond Pike.

The private investigator was supposed to be under strict supervision while cooperating.

Then he lifted an envelope toward the window.

May you like

And shouted:

“Jack! Shane lied about one thing. Dustin didn't choose Emily by accident.”
