Chapter 5 - The Man Outside the Door

I backed away from the door.

Chloe was still asleep.

The voice came again.

"Mara."

Same rhythm.

Same gravel.

It sounded exactly like Dominic.

I whispered into my phone, "Someone is outside."

Detective Park became instantly calm.

"Do not answer him."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Move away from the door. Take Chloe into the bathroom. Lock it."

The handle moved.

Once.

Slowly.

My stomach dropped.

The security latch held.

I crossed the room and shook Chloe awake.

"Sweetheart."

She blinked.

"What?"

"We're playing a game."

She knew immediately it wasn't a game.

"What game?"

"Quiet game."

I lifted her from the bed.

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

Another sound came from the door.

Metal touching metal.

I rushed into the bathroom.

Locked it.

Park remained on speaker.

"Officers are coming."

"How long?"

"Seconds."

The hotel-room door crashed open.

Chloe clamped both hands over her mouth.

I held her against me.

Footsteps entered.

Slow.

No rush.

Whoever it was believed he had time.

Then voices exploded.

"Police!"

"Hands!"

A crash.

Shouting.

Silence.

Park said, "Stay where you are."

I did.

A minute later, an officer knocked on the bathroom door and identified himself.

We emerged.

A man lay handcuffed near the bed.

He wasn't Dominic.

But from a distance, with silvered hair and a similar coat, he could fool a camera.

His shoes were shiny black.

Chloe pointed.

"That's him."

The man from the hospital.

The one who had written on her drawing.

His eyes found her.

I stepped between them.

"Don't look at my daughter."

He smiled.

Detective Park entered.

Dominic followed behind her, escorted by an officer.

The suspect saw him.

The smile disappeared.

Dominic stared.

"Victor."

So this was Adrian's cousin.

Victor Vescari.

The man Adrian already suspected.

Victor laughed softly.

"Uncle."

Dominic looked like he wanted to kill him.

Park stepped between them.

"Everybody stays civilized."

Victor's gaze returned to me.

"You have his eyes too."

I froze.

"What?"

"Your daughter."

Dominic said, "Shut up."

Victor smiled again.

"She's the only thing Adrian never saw coming."

Park pulled him toward the hall.

Victor twisted around.

"Locker 317, Mara."

My breath caught.

Park heard.

"What locker?"

I didn't answer quickly enough.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What locker?"

I took the key from my pocket.

She stared.

"You've had that this entire time?"

"Yes."

She did not look pleased.

"Where did it come from?"

I explained.

Park held out her hand.

"Give it to me."

I hesitated.

"Now."

I handed it over.

For the first time that day, I felt relieved to give responsibility to someone else.

Park looked at Victor.

"Union Station?"

He smiled.

"Go find out."

We didn't go.

Not immediately.

Bomb technicians and federal agents did.

Locker 317 contained no explosive.

No weapon.

Just a red leather notebook, three flash drives, a sealed envelope, and a photograph.

The photograph was of me.

Pregnant.

Leaving a grocery store.

I nearly dropped it when Park showed me.

Someone had taken it without my knowledge eight years ago.

On the back, one sentence was written in black ink.

THE CHILD LIVES.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

Park looked toward Dominic.

"So do I."

Dominic stared at the picture.

His face collapsed.

"No."

"What?"

"That's my brother's handwriting."

Adrian's father.

The dead patriarch.

The man who had ordered Dominic to separate us.

My skin crawled.

"He knew Chloe was born?"

Dominic sat down slowly.

"Apparently."

"And you didn't?"

"No."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I knew you were pregnant. After Adrian's father told me you'd left Chicago, I stopped checking."

"He lied to you too."

Dominic looked sick.

"Yes."

The red notebook contained payments.

Dates.

Initials.

Properties.

Police badge numbers.

Judges.

Businesses.

Enough information to make Detective Park stop speaking halfway through.

The federal agents became very interested.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

V.V.

Victor Vescari.

Payments connected to Matteo's death.

Payments connected to Adrian's shooting.

And one payment from eight years earlier.

A payment to a private surveillance company.

The note beside it:

M.H. / infant confirmation.

I felt physically ill.

Adrian's family had known about Chloe from the beginning.

Maybe not Adrian.

But someone.

"Why?" I asked.

Park didn't answer.

Dominic did.

"Leverage."

I looked at him.

"Against Adrian?"

"Eventually."

My arms wrapped around myself.

"She was a baby."

"That wouldn't matter to men like my brother."

Something shifted in Dominic's voice when he said it.

Shame.

Not enough to erase what he'd done.

But real.

"What was Adrian's father planning?"

"I don't know."

"Guess."

Dominic looked at the photograph.

"If Adrian tried leaving again, his father could reveal he had a daughter. Or threaten her."

I closed my eyes.

The room spun.

Everything I'd hated about Adrian suddenly became tangled with things neither of us had known.

But one warning remained.

DON'T TRUST ADRIAN EITHER.

The anonymous sender knew more.

"What about the envelope?" I asked.

Park hesitated.

"It's addressed to Adrian."

"From whom?"

"No return name."

"Handwriting?"

Dominic looked.

Then went pale again.

"Matteo."

Adrian's dead brother.

Park opened it with federal approval.

Inside was a letter written years ago.

Adrian,

If you're reading this, something happened to me.

Father knows about Mara and the baby.

He ordered Victor to keep watch.

I don't know what he intends to do.

I tried telling you, but Dominic blocked me.

Don't trust anyone until you see the records yourself.

Especially not—

The final line had been torn away.

Everyone stared at the missing paper.

"Especially not who?" I whispered.

Dominic sat perfectly still.

Park looked at him.

"You blocked Matteo?"

"No."

"You just told Mara you intercepted messages."

"From her. Not Matteo."

"Could Adrian's father have?"

"Yes."

"Victor?"

"Yes."

"Could you?"

Dominic looked at me.

"Yes."

At least he didn't lie.

The federal agents took the materials.

Victor was moved into custody.

By evening, news reports announced multiple arrests connected to organized crime.

Adrian remained in critical condition.

One donor had finally reached St. Catherine safely.

The transfusion worked.

He stabilized.

For the first time since sunrise, doctors believed he might live.

Chloe asked to see him.

I said no.

Then she asked again.

"Why?"

"Because he needs rest."

"I can be quiet."

"That's not the only reason."

She studied me.

"You're still mad."

"Yes."

"At him?"

"At everyone."

"That's a lot of mad."

"It is."

She leaned her head on my shoulder.

"Maybe do it one person at a time."

I laughed softly.

"Good plan."

The next morning, Detective Park drove us back to St. Catherine.

Security had tripled.

Adrian was awake.

Weak.

But awake.

When Chloe entered, he looked at her like he couldn't believe the world had given him another chance.

She stood near the doorway.

"Hi."

"Hi."

"Mom says you're my biological father."

His mouth twitched.

"Your mom is very accurate."

"She says you made bad choices."

He glanced at me.

"Also accurate."

"Are you in the mafia?"

I nearly choked.

Adrian didn't.

"Yes."

Chloe nodded thoughtfully.

"Are you going to stop?"

Silence.

He looked at her.

Then said, "Yes."

It wasn't dramatic.

No grand promise.

Just one word.

I believed him more because of that.

Chloe walked closer.

She placed the purple horse picture on his blanket.

"I made another dad."

Adrian looked at the three stick figures.

His eyes filled.

"Thank you."

She pointed.

"That's you."

"I have very long arms."

"You need them."

"Why?"

"To hug both people."

Adrian looked at me.

I looked away.

Later, when Chloe left with the nurse for juice, Adrian said, "I need to tell you something."

I crossed my arms.

"That's becoming everyone's favorite sentence."

"This one is worse."

My stomach tightened.

"The message Victor sent you."

"Which one?"

"Don't trust Adrian."

"Yes."

"He wasn't completely lying."

I stared.

Adrian looked toward the window.

"Eight years ago, before I disappeared, I knew my family had begun watching you."

My body went cold.

"What?"

"I didn't know about the pregnancy."

"That's not what I asked."

"No."

"You knew I was being watched."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"I thought I could fix it."

My anger rose.

"You thought wrong."

"I know."

"Why did you leave?"

He looked at me.

"Because my father gave me a choice."

"What choice?"

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"You."

I stopped.

"Or?"

He swallowed.

"My brother."

I stared.

"He said if I stayed with you, Matteo would die."

The room went silent.

"So you left me to save him."

"Yes."

"But Matteo died anyway."

Adrian's face broke.

"Yes."

Before I could answer, Detective Park rushed into the room.

She held the torn letter.

"We found the missing piece."

Adrian went still.

Park looked from him to Dominic, who had just entered behind her.

She unfolded a tiny strip of paper.

May you like

The final words were still readable.

Especially not Dominic.
