Chapter 3 - The Secret Inside The Folder

The woman holding the black folder stood in the middle of The Imperial Room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed normally.

Because everyone in that restaurant understood one thing.

Whatever was inside that folder mattered.

The woman looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

Her expression softened slightly.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

Hearing someone call me that in front of everyone felt strange.

Not because I wasn't his wife.

I was.

But because for years, I had been Clara Bennett to the world.

A waitress.

A woman who carried plates.

A woman people ignored.

Nobody knew I was Clara Blackwood.

Nobody knew I was married to the man who could make entire companies collapse with a single decision.

And honestly, I preferred it that way.

I never wanted Adrian's name to protect me.

I wanted to stand on my own.

But tonight, someone had forced me into a position where I needed someone to stand beside me.

Adrian took the folder.

"Thank you, Elena."

The woman nodded.

"I brought everything you requested."

Marcus watched them carefully.

His confidence had disappeared completely.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered him.

That bothered him more than anything.

People like Marcus were used to controlling conversations.

They were used to being the loudest person in the room.

But Adrian didn't play that game.

He opened the folder slowly.

Not dramatically.

Not for attention.

Just calmly.

Like a man who already knew the truth.

The first document was placed on the table.

Then another.

Then another.

Marcus looked down.

His face changed.

"What is this?"

Adrian didn't look at him.

"Your company records."

Marcus laughed nervously.

"That doesn't mean anything."

Adrian turned the page.

"Three years of harassment complaints."

Silence.

"Seven employees who left after reporting your behavior."

Another page.

"Payments made through private accounts to make complaints disappear."

Marcus stopped smiling.

The room became uncomfortable.

Because suddenly, the humiliation wasn't about me anymore.

It was about him.

The man who had spent years making others feel powerless was finally standing in front of someone who couldn't be intimidated.

I watched Marcus carefully.

Earlier, he looked like a king.

Now he looked like someone searching for an escape.

"You investigated me?"

Adrian finally looked up.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"You investigated yourself."

Marcus shook his head.

"You think you can destroy me because of some paperwork?"

Adrian leaned slightly forward.

"No."

A pause.

"I think you destroyed yourself a long time ago."

Nobody spoke.

The manager looked terrified.

The guests who had laughed earlier sat quietly.

Some looked ashamed.

Some looked afraid.

But none of them looked away anymore.

Because they were finally seeing what they had ignored.

Marcus turned toward me.

"You set this up."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Excuse me?"

"You wanted revenge."

I stared at him.

"You poured a drink on me in front of everyone."

"You knew exactly what you were doing."

His voice became louder.

"You wanted Adrian to come here."

The accusation was ridiculous.

But it revealed something important.

Marcus truly believed people only acted because of power.

He couldn't imagine someone being hurt simply because they were hurt.

Adrian stepped between us.

"Do not speak to her like that."

Marcus looked at him.

"You're threatening me?"

"No."

Adrian adjusted his jacket.

"I'm warning you."

Marcus laughed.

A desperate laugh.

"You really think everyone is afraid of you?"

Adrian didn't respond.

Because he didn't need to.

Then Marcus's phone rang again.

He looked down.

This time, he didn't answer immediately.

The screen showed several missed calls.

Then one new message.

His hands started shaking.

"What happened?"

One of his friends asked.

Marcus ignored him.

He read the message again.

Then again.

"What did you do?"

His eyes moved toward Adrian.

Adrian remained silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

"You knew about this?"

Still silence.

"What did you do to my company?"

Adrian looked at him.

"I didn't do anything."

A pause.

"Your choices did."

That sentence hit harder than anger.

Because Marcus knew.

The folder.

The complaints.

The evidence.

Everything was connected.

But I still didn't understand one thing.

Why had Adrian arrived so quickly?

Why had he already known?

Why had he been prepared?

Later, I would realize that was the question I should have asked first.

Because Adrian wasn't only responding to what happened.

He had been watching.

After the police arrived to take statements, the restaurant slowly emptied.

Marcus was forced to leave with his lawyers.

His friends disappeared without saying goodbye.

The guests who had laughed avoided eye contact with me.

The same people who watched my humiliation now acted like they had never been there.

Adrian and I sat in a private room upstairs.

The restaurant manager had offered it to us after everything happened.

I changed into a spare dress from one of the staff members.

It wasn't elegant.

It wasn't expensive.

But it was dry.

And for the first time in hours, I felt like I could breathe.

Adrian sat across from me.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

I knew him.

Something was bothering him.

"Tell me the truth."

He looked up.

"About what?"

"How did you know?"

His expression didn't change.

"Clara..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You knew before I called you."

Silence.

"You knew where I was."

Another silence.

"You had security footage before you even entered the restaurant."

Adrian looked away.

That was answer enough.

I felt a strange feeling in my chest.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something closer to confusion.

"Adrian."

He finally looked at me.

"I've been protecting you."

The words hurt.

"Protecting me from what?"

He didn't answer.

And that scared me more.

Because Adrian always had an answer.

Always.

I stood up.

"How long?"

He remained silent.

"How long have you been watching my life without telling me?"

His face softened.

"Clara, it's not like that."

"Then explain."

He ran a hand through his hair.

For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.

Not powerful.

Not feared.

Just my husband.

"I found something six months ago."

My heart slowed.

"What?"

He opened his briefcase.

Then removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"I didn't want to scare you."

I stared at it.

"What is it?"

"Something connected to the people who have been following you."

The room went cold.

"Following me?"

Adrian nodded.

"I thought it was random at first."

He pushed the envelope closer.

"Then I realized it wasn't."

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Pictures of me.

Leaving work.

Walking home.

Sitting at a coffee shop.

Pictures taken without my knowledge.

My hands started shaking.

"Who took these?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that made my stomach drop.

"The same person who sent me the video tonight."

I looked up.

"What video?"

His expression changed.

The anger returned.

"The video of you being humiliated wasn't sent by the restaurant."

A pause.

"It was sent by someone who wanted me to see it."

I looked at the photographs again.

Someone had been watching me.

Someone had planned this.

Someone wanted Adrian involved.

"Why?"

Adrian reached for my hand.

"I don't know yet."

That was the first time I heard uncertainty in his voice.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because Adrian Blackwood was not a man who admitted he didn't know.

The next morning, Adrian took me home.

But he didn't leave.

Not even for a minute.

He made calls.

He checked security systems.

He spoke to people I had never met.

People who answered him immediately.

I finally understood something.

My husband wasn't just wealthy.

He wasn't just powerful.

There was an entire world around him that I knew nothing about.

A world he had hidden from me.

That afternoon, I found him standing in his office.

Looking at a document on his desk.

His face was pale.

"Adrian?"

He quickly closed the file.

Too quickly.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

I stared at him.

"Don't lie to me."

He looked at me.

Then slowly opened the document again.

Inside was an old photograph.

A photograph of me.

But I wasn't alone.

Standing beside me was someone I recognized.

Someone from my past.

Someone I thought I would never see again.

Adrian whispered one sentence.

"Clara, I think we finally found who started this."

I stepped closer.

"Who?"

He turned the photograph around.

May you like

And when I saw the name written on the back, I forgot how to breathe.

Because it was the name of the person who had been searching for me for years.
