Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Never Died

"Mom?"

The word barely escaped Harper's mouth.

Margaret Bennett stood beneath the dim courtroom light.

Older.

Thinner.

Alive.

Harper couldn't move.

Her mother had supposedly died from complications following surgery when Harper was fifteen.

There had been a funeral.

A coffin.

A grave.

Harper had spent sixteen years visiting it.

Margaret stepped closer.

"I'm sorry."

Harper backed away.

"No."

"Harper—"

"No."

Roman remained beside her.

Not touching.

Waiting.

Harper's voice shook.

"I buried you."

"I know."

"You let me bury you."

"I had to disappear."

"You had a daughter."

Margaret's face crumpled.

"And disappearing was the only way to keep that daughter alive."

Harper stared at her.

Margaret explained.

Daniel had discovered Jonathan was collecting evidence.

He threatened Harper.

Margaret agreed to vanish and become leverage.

Jonathan publicly accepted her death.

Then he continued investigating.

Two years later, he was killed.

"Why didn't you come back?"

"Because Daniel still had people watching you."

"For sixteen years?"

"Yes."

Harper laughed through tears.

"That's convenient."

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

Roman finally spoke.

"Where's Daniel?"

Margaret looked at him.

"You have your father's eyes."

Roman's expression hardened.

"Answer me."

"Gone."

"With what?"

"A list."

Harper remembered the case.

"The vault."

Margaret nodded.

"Names of judges, executives, officials. Everyone D.C.M. paid."

"Real?"

"Some."

Roman understood.

"A trap."

"Jonathan created several versions. Only one is complete."

"Where?"

Margaret looked at Harper.

"With Evelyn."

Roman stiffened.

"Evelyn contacted you?"

"She's been protecting Harper for years."

Harper stared.

"Protecting me? Someone filmed my bedroom."

"That wasn't Evelyn."

"Then who?"

Margaret looked frightened.

"The second founder."

Before she could say more, gunfire erupted outside.

Roman pulled Harper down.

His men returned fire.

Margaret shouted, "There's another exit!"

They escaped through an underground records corridor.

A black SUV waited.

Inside, Margaret handed Harper an envelope.

"Your father wanted you to have this."

Harper opened it.

A letter.

My Harper,

If you're reading this, then you became exactly what I hoped you would become: someone who asks the question powerful people don't want answered.

Harper stopped.

She couldn't continue.

Roman gently took the page and waited.

She nodded.

He read the rest aloud.

Jonathan explained that the evidence was hidden not in a vault but in a legal case.

Calder Maritime.

Every suspicious invoice number corresponded to a page and line in a sealed court deposition.

Harper suddenly understood.

"The settlement archive."

Margaret nodded.

"Daniel thought he'd destroyed it."

"He didn't."

Harper had kept a personal working copy.

At the firm.

They drove downtown.

Davies, Croft and Mercer.

Harper stopped outside the building.

D.C.M.

She stared at the brass letters.

"Oh my God."

Roman followed her gaze.

The law firm itself.

Davies.

Croft.

Mercer.

D.C.M.

The same initials.

The laundering network wasn't merely connected to Harper's firm.

It had been hiding behind it.

For decades.

They entered through the underground garage.

Harper used her access card.

Still active.

On the thirty-second floor, she found her office untouched.

The Calder boxes were there.

She pulled the deposition.

Invoice 417.

Page 4, line 17.

One word.

MERCER.

Roman looked at her.

"Who's Mercer?"

Harper answered slowly.

"Arthur Mercer. Founding partner."

"Alive?"

"Retired."

Margaret whispered, "Not retired."

Harper turned.

Margaret looked terrified.

"He's the second founder."

Roman's phone rang.

Security.

"Boss, someone just entered the building."

"Who?"

A pause.

"Arthur Mercer."

The elevator bell sounded.

Harper looked toward the glass doors.

The floor indicator climbed.

Twenty-eight.

Twenty-nine.

Thirty.

Margaret backed away.

"Harper, listen to me. Whatever he says, don't tell him where Evelyn is."

Thirty-one.

Roman stepped in front of Harper.

The elevator reached thirty-two.

The doors opened.

But Arthur Mercer wasn't inside.

Connor was.

May you like

He was holding a gun.

And behind him, someone had a knife pressed against Paige's throat.
