Chapter 1 - The Man in the Background

Her phone buzzed again. Another voicemail from her mother.

“Look how beautiful it is!” Valentina’s voice carried a carefree happiness Maria hadn’t heard in years—the kind that only appeared when someone finally let themselves relax. 🌊

Smiling, Maria opened the family chat. Every day since arriving in Turkey, her fifty-two-year-old mother had been filling it with photos from a luxurious five-star resort. Endless beaches. Perfect rows of sun loungers. Crystal-clear turquoise water. Lavish breakfast buffets. Nothing unusual. Just a woman who had spent most of her life putting others first and had finally decided to enjoy herself.

Maria swiped to the next photo.

Then her smile disappeared.

Something in the background caught her eye.

It was only a small detail, almost hidden at the edge of the frame. A man stretched out on a sun lounger. Broad shoulders. A dragon tattoo across one shoulder blade. And, most unmistakably, a pair of blue swim shorts with a white stripe running down the side—the exact pair Maria had spent days choosing before ordering online as Grigori’s birthday present. 📸

She pinched the screen to zoom in.

Then zoomed in again.

A cold knot tightened in her stomach.

Just three days earlier, her husband had kissed her goodbye before leaving on what he called a business trip to Novosibirsk. After eleven years of marriage, there had been nothing suspicious about another work trip. Short messages. Late meetings. Business dinners. Site visits the following day. It was the routine they had lived with for years.

But the evidence hiding inside those vacation photos told a different story.

That familiar body in the background.

The black gym bag with its distinctive red logo appearing in another picture.

A reflection in a hotel window that looked impossible to explain away.

Every clue pointed to the same conclusion.

Grigori wasn't in Siberia.

He was in Turkey.

Somehow, he had ended up in the background of her mother's holiday photos, carefully avoiding the camera yet never completely escaping it. 🧳

The longer Maria stared at the images, the more memories began fitting together.

The private phone calls he always took out on the balcony, leaving the sliding door barely open.

Her mother's sudden habit of defending him whenever they argued.

"Let him breathe."

"He's doing all this for you."

It was as if Valentina always knew what Grigori was thinking before he said a single word.

Then one thought refused to leave Maria's mind.

"I paid for this vacation myself... so why is my husband here too?"

Behind that simple question waited an answer she wasn't sure she was ready to face.
