Chapter 5 - Elena’s Second Secret

Sophia reached the alley too late.

Thomas was gone.

Adrian stood beside Mateo near an abandoned vehicle.

“What happened?”

Sophia struggled to catch her breath.

“My mother called.”

Adrian turned immediately.

“What did she say?”

“Thomas wanted you to follow him.”

“Why?”

“To bring you to Elena.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Elena is at the mansion.”

“That’s what I said.”

“No.”

Sophia showed him the message.

“My mother said the person waiting for you was Elena.”

Mateo frowned.

“Could mean someone using her name.”

Sophia shook her head.

“No. She said Elena has a second identity inside the Consortium.”

Adrian went still.

“What identity?”

Sophia remembered the name her mother had spoken.

“Lena Vale.”

Mateo’s face changed.

Adrian noticed.

“You know it.”

Mateo hesitated.

“Everyone knows it.”

“I don’t.”

“Lena Vale is a broker.”

“For what?”

“Information.”

Sophia looked at Adrian.

Mateo continued.

“Nobody knows if Lena Vale is a man or woman. The name appears whenever rival groups suddenly know each other’s secrets.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You’re telling me my sister is an intelligence broker?”

“I’m telling you the name exists.”

Adrian immediately called the mansion.

No answer.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Then Elena’s doctor.

Nothing.

Adrian’s expression became deadly.

“Car.”

They drove back at reckless speed.

Sophia sat beside Adrian.

He said almost nothing.

She understood why.

Finding Elena alive had been impossible happiness.

Discovering she might be part of the conspiracy would destroy something inside him.

“Maybe your sister used the identity to survive,” Sophia said.

Adrian looked out the window.

“You don’t have to defend her.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

“I’m reminding you that appearances have been wrong all day.”

He looked at her.

That was true.

The maid was an investigator’s daughter.

The dead uncle lived.

The dead mother might live.

The fiancée was an operative.

The lost sister might be another.

Even Adrian’s father was not his father.

Truth had become unstable.

When they reached the mansion, the front doors were open.

No guards outside.

Adrian entered first.

Sophia followed despite Mateo ordering her to stay behind.

The library was empty.

Elena was gone.

So was Isabella.

Marco remained in the secure room.

Unconscious.

Alive.

On the library table was a note.

Adrian picked it up.

You always believed I needed saving.

—E.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Sophia read over his shoulder.

“That doesn’t mean she betrayed you.”

Adrian crumpled the note.

“She left.”

“Why?”

“We find out.”

Security footage showed Elena walking from the library ten minutes after Adrian departed.

She was weak but moving on her own.

She entered Isabella’s room.

Six minutes later, both women left through a service exit.

No visible weapons.

No struggle.

They left together.

Adrian replayed the footage three times.

Sophia noticed something.

“Stop.”

Mateo paused.

“Back.”

The footage reversed.

“Here.”

Sophia pointed.

Elena touched Isabella’s sleeve.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two taps.

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

Sophia replayed it.

“Signal.”

“For what?”

“My father taught me something similar.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Morse?”

“No. Witness signals used during surveillance.”

She counted.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two.

“Being watched.”

Adrian turned toward the camera.

“Elena was warning Isabella?”

“Or warning whoever would watch the footage later.”

“Us.”

Sophia nodded.

“Maybe.”

Mateo checked exterior cameras.

The women entered a black SUV.

License plate obscured.

Adrian asked, “Where?”

Mateo traced traffic cameras through contacts.

“Brooklyn.”

“Exact.”

“Red Hook.”

Adrian froze.

The warehouse from the old photograph.

Sophia remembered.

Her father.

Dominic Falcone.

Maria.

All standing outside the same building.

They drove there before sunset.

Adrian brought only four trusted men.

No larger crew.

Nobody knew whom to trust anymore.

The warehouse looked abandoned.

Inside, however, lights were on.

Adrian and Sophia entered through a side door.

Voices came from the second floor.

Isabella.

Then Elena.

Adrian moved toward the stairs.

Sophia touched his arm.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

Again.

He was beginning to listen when she said that.

They heard Isabella say:

“He knows too much now.”

Elena answered:

“He was always going to know.”

“You think he’ll forgive you?”

“No.”

“What about Sophia?”

A pause.

“She was never supposed to get involved this deeply.”

Sophia looked at Adrian.

His expression remained unreadable.

Isabella spoke again.

“Thomas is moving the accounts tonight.”

Elena said, “Then we don’t have much time.”

“You trust Adrian?”

“I trust Sophia.”

That surprised both listeners.

Isabella laughed.

“She’s the daughter of the woman who betrayed Daniel.”

“And she risked her life anyway.”

Adrian’s eyes shifted toward Sophia.

Elena continued.

“Adrian will listen to her.”

“Will he?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena paused.

“Because he’s falling in love with her.”

Sophia stopped breathing.

Adrian looked at the floor.

For once, the feared Adrian Falcone appeared genuinely uncomfortable.

Sophia almost smiled despite everything.

Then a gun clicked upstairs.

The mood vanished.

A male voice said:

“That’s touching.”

Thomas.

Adrian moved instantly.

He climbed the stairs.

Sophia followed.

Inside the office, Thomas stood behind Elena with a pistol.

Isabella stood beside the desk.

Rebecca Hayes sat in a chair with her wrists bound.

Sophia’s heart stopped.

“Mom.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“Oh, baby.”

Sophia stepped forward.

Thomas raised the gun.

“Don’t.”

Adrian entered behind her.

“You wanted me.”

Thomas smiled.

“Yes.”

“Here I am.”

Elena looked at her brother.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

“I’m listening.”

“I used the name Lena Vale.”

He absorbed it.

“Why?”

“To infiltrate the Consortium.”

Isabella laughed bitterly.

“She’s been playing all of us.”

Elena ignored her.

“I discovered them two years ago.”

“You never told me.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because your organization had been compromised.”

Adrian looked at Mateo.

Elena shook her head.

“Not him.”

“Who?”

“Someone closer.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Marco.”

“No.”

“Carlo?”

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“Your lawyer.”

Adrian froze.

Samuel Price had served the Falcone family for thirty years.

He had managed every legal company.

Every trust.

Every inheritance.

Every estate document after Dominic died.

Thomas smiled.

“Samuel has been useful.”

Adrian raised his weapon toward Thomas.

“Release them.”

Thomas pressed the gun closer to Elena.

“No.”

Rebecca spoke.

“Thomas, this is over.”

He looked at her.

“You said that eleven years ago.”

Sophia looked between them.

“You two knew each other.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“We all did.”

Thomas laughed.

“Tell her.”

Rebecca looked at Sophia.

“I worked with your father.”

“You betrayed him.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt more because Rebecca did not deny it.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You disappeared.”

“To keep them from finding you.”

“You left me alone.”

Rebecca’s voice broke.

“I know.”

Sophia looked away.

Adrian watched her.

Thomas said, “Touching reunions later.”

He motioned toward Adrian.

“Put the gun down.”

Adrian did.

Thomas smiled.

“Kick it away.”

Adrian obeyed.

Sophia stared.

This was not a man accustomed to surrendering control.

But Elena stood beneath Thomas’s gun.

Adrian would choose her every time.

Thomas looked at Isabella.

“Open the safe.”

Isabella moved toward the wall.

Adrian frowned.

“There’s a safe here?”

Elena answered.

“The master ledger.”

Sophia stared.

“My father’s copy wasn’t in the box.”

“No.”

Isabella opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a black binder.

Thomas’s face changed when he saw it.

Greed.

Relief.

Fear.

All at once.

“Bring it.”

Isabella picked it up.

Then looked at Elena.

Elena gave the smallest nod.

Isabella threw the binder toward Adrian.

Chaos erupted.

Thomas fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling as Elena dropped.

Rebecca kicked the chair into Thomas’s knees.

Sophia pulled her mother down.

Adrian grabbed Thomas’s wrist.

Mateo rushed in.

Seconds later, Thomas was disarmed.

Nobody was seriously hurt.

Adrian stood over him.

“You’re done.”

Thomas laughed from the floor.

“No.”

Adrian looked down.

Thomas smiled.

“You still think the ledger matters.”

Elena picked up the black binder.

“What do you mean?”

Thomas’s eyes moved toward the windows.

“The Consortium stopped using paper years ago.”

Sophia’s face tightened.

“Where is the real evidence?”

Thomas grinned.

“Already being erased.”

Elena opened the binder.

Inside was only one page.

A bank account number.

And a countdown written in red ink.

00:14:52.

Sophia looked at Adrian.

“What happens in fourteen minutes?”

Thomas’s smile widened.

“Everything disappears.”

Then Adrian’s phone vibrated.

A message from Samuel Price.

COME ALONE OR SOPHIA’S FATHER DIES AGAIN.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Below the message was a live photograph.

A man sat tied to a chair.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Alive.

Sophia saw the face.

Her knees nearly gave way.

May you like

It was Daniel Hayes.

Her father.
