Chapter 6 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The figure standing in the doorway held the black music book against his chest as if it was the most valuable thing in the world.

Because maybe it was.

The emergency lights painted his face in deep red shadows.

For several seconds, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.

The shape of his face.

The way he stood.

The familiar sadness in his eyes.

It was impossible.

It couldn’t be real.

Daniel Whitmore took one step backward.

His voice barely came out.

“No…”

The man looked at him.

“Daniel.”

That single word destroyed the last bit of doubt.

Because Daniel reacted like he had just seen a ghost.

Adrian covered his mouth.

Clara’s hands began shaking.

And Julian…

Julian looked like he had already known this moment would come.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.”

He didn’t answer.

My heart sank.

“Julian.”

His eyes met mine.

And for the first time in years, he looked like the boy I used to love.

Not the wealthy man beside Vivian.

Not the person who betrayed me.

Just someone terrified of what was about to happen.

“I thought he was dead.”

The stranger stepped forward.

The ballroom lights flickered again.

His face became clearer.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

The same eyes.

The same expression I saw every morning when I looked in the mirror.

My breath disappeared.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it in old photographs.

I had kissed that face goodbye in a hospital room.

I had buried that face in my memories.

“Dad?”

The word came out before I could stop it.

The entire room froze.

The man’s expression broke.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“Elena.”

My knees almost gave out.

No.

This wasn’t possible.

My father died when I was eighteen.

I was there.

I held his hand.

I heard the machines stop.

I watched doctors leave the room.

I remembered the silence afterward.

I remembered thinking I would never hear his voice again.

But now…

He was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Thomas Marlow slowly walked closer.

Every step felt unreal.

Every breath hurt.

“You got so tall.”

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“That’s what you say?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I practiced what I would say to you for twenty years.”

The anger came before the sadness.

“Twenty years?”

My voice shook.

“You let me believe you were dead for twenty years?”

Thomas stopped.

“I had no choice.”

“No choice?”

I looked around the ballroom.

At everyone.

“All of you say that.”

My voice became louder.

“You had no choice.”

“You were protecting me.”

“You were trying to help me.”

“But nobody ever asked what I wanted.”

Thomas lowered his head.

Because he knew.

He knew I was right.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words were not enough.

Not for twenty years.

Not for all the nights I cried because I thought I had lost the only person who truly believed in me.

Not for every birthday where I wished he could see me.

Not for every song I played alone.

But when he looked at me…

I saw my father.

The man who stayed awake all night fixing broken pianos.

The man who smiled when I played my first song.

The man who told me I was never invisible.

And that made everything worse.

Because I wanted to hate him.

But I couldn’t.

Cassian stepped forward.

“Thomas.”

My father looked at him.

A strange silence passed between them.

“You know each other.”

It wasn’t a question.

Thomas nodded.

“I do.”

My eyes moved between them.

“How?”

Cassian looked away.

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

Thomas answered.

“Because Cassian helped me survive.”

The room reacted.

Especially me.

“What?”

Thomas looked at me.

“Twenty years ago, after I discovered the archive, they came after everyone connected to it.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the crowd.

Nobody needed to answer.

Because everyone knew.

The powerful people whose names were hidden in my father’s notes.

“The people who wanted the truth buried.”

My hands tightened.

“And Cassian?”

Thomas looked at him.

“He was the only person willing to fight back.”

I looked at Cassian.

The warning on the phone returned to my mind.

Do not trust the man standing closest to you.

But now I didn’t know what to believe.

Because my father trusted him.

The person who had spent his entire life protecting me trusted him.

Then why the warning?

Cassian noticed my confusion.

“There’s something else.”

The room became silent.

My father’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

He looked at the music book.

“The message was real.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Thomas walked toward me.

“The warning.”

He looked at Cassian.

“It wasn’t about him.”

Everyone froze.

I stared.

“Then who?”

Thomas looked around the room.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then his eyes stopped.

On one person.

Julian.

The silence was immediate.

Julian’s face turned pale.

“No.”

Thomas didn’t look away.

“You were the closest person to her after me.”

Julian shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

Thomas’s voice became cold.

“I understand everything.”

The room changed.

Because this wasn’t an accusation anymore.

It was a confession waiting to happen.

I looked at Julian.

“Tell me.”

He said nothing.

“Tell me the truth.”

His breathing became heavier.

Vivian looked between us.

“What is happening?”

Nobody answered her.

Julian stepped back.

“I never wanted this.”

My stomach tightened.

“Wanted what?”

He looked at me.

“The truth.”

A painful silence followed.

Then he reached inside his jacket.

Cassian immediately moved.

But Julian pulled out something small.

A key.

An old metal key.

Thomas’s face changed when he saw it.

“Where did you get that?”

Julian looked at him.

“Your father gave it to my father.”

The room went silent.

Thomas stepped forward.

“That key was destroyed.”

Julian smiled sadly.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“It was hidden.”

My fingers went cold.

“What does it open?”

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors behind Julian slowly began to move.

Everyone turned.

A hidden passage opened inside the wall.

A place nobody knew existed.

A dark hallway behind the mansion.

Thomas whispered:

“No…”

Cassian looked at him.

“What?”

My father stared into the darkness.

Because he recognized what was inside.

“The room where I hid the real archive.”

The door opened completely.

May you like

And from inside the hidden room, a voice whispered my name...

“Come in, Elena.”
