Chapter 2 - The Voices Behind the Wall

Elena Falcone had spent most of her adult life trying to escape her brother’s shadow, yet grief had drawn her directly back into it. She entered the mansion holding her son’s hand, unaware that men with rifles watched from behind the marble columns—and unaware that Matteo was alive beneath the floor.
Luca was eight years old, bright, observant, and already suspicious of the silence surrounding them.
“Mom,” he whispered, “where is Uncle Matteo?”
Elena tightened her grip on his hand. “They said we would say goodbye here.”
The answer seemed to hurt her as soon as she spoke it.
From the hidden security room, Matteo watched through the monitor as his sister entered the foyer. Elena wore a black coat over a simple dress. Her face was pale, and her eyes were swollen from crying. Luca carried the silver toy car Matteo had given him for his birthday.
Matteo had spent years telling himself that keeping his distance protected them.
Now his enemies were using their love for him as a weapon.
Sofia stood beside him, studying a paper floor plan pinned beneath the monitors.
“There is an old dumbwaiter shaft behind this wall,” she said. “It reaches the guest hall.”
“Can it hold my weight?”
“Probably not.”
“Then we’ll test the architect’s honesty.”
She glanced at him. “You make jokes when people are trying to kill you?”
“Only when the situation is serious.”
One of the monitors showed Damian approaching Elena with open arms. Camilla followed, wearing an expression of carefully practiced sorrow.
Elena released Luca and stepped toward them.
“Where is my brother?”
Camilla lowered her eyes. “We’re still waiting for the authorities to release what they recovered.”
Elena swayed.
Damian caught her shoulders as though he were supporting her. Matteo saw the deception in every movement. Damian had always been good at pretending affection, but now Matteo recognized how often he must have mistaken performance for loyalty.
Camilla knelt before Luca.
“I’m so sorry about your uncle.”
Luca stared at her. “My uncle isn’t dead.”
The adults froze.
Elena quickly touched his shoulder. “Luca—”
“He promised he would take me to the Yankees game next month,” the boy said. “Uncle Matteo doesn’t break promises.”
Inside the security room, Matteo looked away from the screen.
Sofia pretended not to notice.
Damian guided Elena toward the drawing room. “There are documents we need to discuss.”
“What documents?”
“Matteo’s final instructions.”
“He didn’t have final instructions.”
“He had many things you didn’t know about.”
Matteo could hear Damian’s voice through the security system. He removed a small earpiece from the console and placed it in his ear.
Camilla told one of the guards to take Luca to the kitchen for something warm to drink.
Elena immediately objected. “He stays with me.”
“Of course,” Camilla said smoothly. “We are all family.”
“Family doesn’t hide a death for two days before calling.”
Camilla’s smile faded.
Matteo almost felt proud.
Sofia traced a passage on the floor plan. “There’s an emergency generator control near the laundry room. If we cut power, most of their radios will lose the internal signal booster.”
“How long will the backup lights remain off?”
“Approximately forty seconds.”
“Enough.”
“For what?”
“To move my sister.”
Sofia studied him. “And what happens after that?”
“We remove Damian’s men one by one.”
“We?”
Matteo looked at her torn sleeve and bruised ankle. “You can remain here.”
She shook her head. “If Damian wins, he’ll kill every servant who saw what happened. Remaining here only changes where I die.”
He did not argue.
They entered the dumbwaiter shaft.
The wooden platform groaned beneath Matteo’s weight. Sofia operated the old pulley while he lowered himself toward the basement. Halfway down, a rope snapped.
The platform dropped several feet.
Sofia gasped as Matteo caught the frame with one hand.
“Are you hurt?” she whispered.
“My dignity may never recover.”
She almost laughed, then covered her mouth, startled by the sound.
For one strange second, surrounded by darkness and danger, Matteo saw something gentle in her expression. It disappeared quickly.
They reached the basement laundry room and moved through the service hall. Two armed men stood near the stairs.
Matteo signaled for Sofia to remain behind him.
He picked up a small silver tray from a shelf and threw it toward the opposite corridor.
The crash drew one guard away.
Matteo stepped behind the second man, locked an arm around his throat, and lowered him silently to the floor. Sofia retrieved the fallen rifle.
She held it incorrectly.
Matteo adjusted her hands. “Keep the stock against your shoulder.”
“I’ve never fired one.”
“Let’s preserve that achievement.”
The first guard returned.
Sofia raised the rifle in panic.
Matteo stopped her from pulling the trigger and struck the man across the temple with his pistol.
The guard collapsed.
“That was close,” she breathed.
“You were about to shoot the ceiling.”
“I was aiming at him.”
“Then the ceiling should be grateful.”
They reached the generator room.
Sofia opened the control panel.
“Once I cut this, we have forty seconds.”
Matteo touched his earpiece. In the drawing room, Damian was telling Elena that Matteo had named him successor.
“You expect me to believe my brother gave you everything?” Elena demanded.
“Matteo understood the organization required strong leadership.”
“My brother never trusted anyone completely.”
Damian’s voice sharpened. “He trusted me.”
“No. He needed you. There’s a difference.”
Matteo’s eyes became cold.
Damian ordered Elena to sign.
She refused.
A chair scraped.
Luca shouted, “Don’t touch my mom!”
Matteo looked at Sofia.
“Now.”
She pulled the switch.
The estate went dark.
Matteo ran.
He climbed the service stairs as shouts filled the corridors. Emergency lights flickered but did not immediately activate. Men collided in the darkness. Radios crackled uselessly.
Matteo reached the drawing room through a side passage and opened the concealed panel.
Elena stood near the desk, shielding Luca with her body. Damian’s silhouette was only several feet away.
Matteo crossed the room silently and struck Damian from behind.
Damian fell against the desk.
Elena gasped.
Matteo caught her arm. “It’s me.”
For a moment, she could not understand.
Lightning illuminated his face.
Elena’s knees nearly failed.
“Matteo?”
He placed a hand over her mouth before she could cry out.
“No sound.”
Tears spilled down her cheeks as she touched his face, confirming that he was real.
Luca threw both arms around Matteo’s waist.
“You kept your promise.”
Matteo closed his eyes for half a second, then forced himself to move.
He guided them toward the hidden panel.
Damian recovered faster than expected and grabbed Matteo’s ankle.
Matteo kicked him away.
Emergency lights flashed on.
The room flooded with dim red illumination.
Damian stared at Matteo as though confronted by a ghost.
“You,” he breathed.
Matteo aimed the pistol at him.
“Disappointed?”
Armed men appeared in the corridor.
Sofia fired the rifle into the ceiling from the service doorway.
This time, she hit exactly what she intended.
The guards ducked.
“Move!” she shouted.
Matteo pushed Elena and Luca into the passage. Sofia followed. He fired twice toward the doorway, forcing Damian’s men back, then closed the hidden panel.
They ran through the corridor as bullets struck the wall behind them.
Elena clutched Luca against her side.
“What is happening?”
“Damian and Camilla arranged the attack in Sicily,” Matteo said.
Elena looked horrified. “Camilla?”
“She wants the empire.”
“She told me you were dead.”
“That was the plan.”
They returned to the security room and locked the steel door.
Elena embraced Matteo fully then, striking his chest once before holding him.
“You let the world believe you died.”
“I didn’t know the world believed it.”
“I spent twenty-four hours telling Luca his uncle was gone.”
“I’m sorry.”
Matteo rarely apologized. Elena heard the sincerity and stopped fighting him.
Sofia checked the monitors.
“They’re blocking every exit.”
Damian appeared on one screen, touching blood at the back of his head. Camilla stood beside him.
“He’s alive,” she said.
Damian’s face twisted with rage. “Seal the estate. Search every room, every wall, every tunnel.”
Camilla looked directly toward one of the cameras.
“Matteo,” she said, knowing he might be watching, “you should have stayed dead.”
Matteo approached the monitor.
Camilla smiled.
“We have someone you care about.”
A guard dragged an elderly woman into view.
Sofia made a broken sound.
The woman was Margaret Bennett, Sofia’s mother. She worked as a cook at the estate and had raised Sofia alone after her husband disappeared years earlier.
A gun was pressed against Margaret’s head.
Camilla continued, “Bring me Elena and the succession documents, or your brave little maid watches her mother die.”
Sofia’s rifle lowered.
“No,” she whispered.
Matteo looked at her.
She backed away, shaking her head. “They knew. They knew I helped you.”
Damian took the camera from its mount and held it close.
“You have ten minutes.”
The screen went black.
Sofia turned toward Matteo with tears in her eyes. “I saved your life. Now save hers.”
Matteo examined the remaining monitors, the blocked exits, and the armed men filling his home.
Then his gaze settled upon the old floor plan.
“There is one room Damian doesn’t know exists.”
“What room?” Elena asked.
May you like
Matteo pointed beneath the mansion.
“My father’s war room.”
