Chapter 6 - The Secret Inside Bellweather

Charles looked at Marcus.
"Upstairs."
They moved together automatically.
Years of trust were difficult to erase in a single afternoon.
Marcus took the east staircase.
Charles the west.
Sofia tried to follow.
Charles pointed toward Eleanor.
"Stay with her."
"Stop telling me—"
"Sofia."
Something in his expression stopped her.
"Please."
That word changed everything.
She nodded.
Charles climbed.
A door slammed above.
He reached the hallway.
Empty.
Marcus appeared at the opposite end.
"Guest wing clear."
Charles checked his mother's room.
Window open.
Curtain moving.
On the bed rested a photograph.
He picked it up.
Anthony.
Eleanor.
Maria Reyes.
Samuel.
Evelyn Vale.
And another man.
Charles recognized him.
Arthur Mills.
Estate manager.
The man had worked for the Vance family for thirty-four years.
He had been at Charles's tenth birthday.
His graduation.
His wedding that ended before its third anniversary.
His father's funeral.
Charles stared at the younger Arthur.
Marcus entered.
"Damn."
"Find him."
Marcus called security.
No answer.
Charles tried again.
Static.
They ran downstairs.
Arthur was gone.
His car remained.
His room was empty.
Closet cleared.
Sofia entered carrying a small leather notebook.
"I found this in the kitchen."
Charles took it.
Arthur's initials were embossed on the cover.
Inside were household notes.
Deliveries.
Schedules.
Passwords.
Then Charles found one page filled with numbers.
Coordinates.
Marcus checked them.
"Bellweather."
Charles closed the book.
"We're going."
Eleanor said, "No."
Charles turned.
"Mom."
"If Arthur has been involved all this time, Bellweather is a trap."
"Probably."
"And you're still going?"
"Definitely."
Sofia folded her arms.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"The key belonged to my mother."
"It's dangerous."
"So is working for you, apparently."
Marcus coughed to hide a laugh.
Charles looked at him.
"Something funny?"
"Absolutely nothing."
Eleanor stepped closer to her son.
"Bring her."
Charles stared.
His mother whispered, "This belongs to her too."
He knew she was right.
He hated it.
An hour later, Charles, Sofia, Marcus, and four security men drove toward the abandoned Bellweather property.
Charles had insisted Eleanor remain at the mansion under guard.
Before leaving, she had taken Sofia aside.
Charles saw her press something into the maid's hand.
He did not ask.
Yet.
Bellweather stood behind trees and rusted fencing.
Half the stone structure was blackened from old fire damage.
Sofia stared through the windshield.
"My mother was here."
Charles looked at her.
"Yes."
"She never told me."
"She probably wanted you to have a life that didn't begin here."
Sofia glanced at him.
"That sounded almost compassionate."
"Don't spread it around."
She smiled.
That smile had somehow become dangerous to him.
Not because of what it revealed about Sofia.
Because of what it revealed about himself.
He looked away.
Inside Bellweather, dust covered everything.
Marcus led them toward the basement.
A concrete wall blocked one corridor.
Room 17 had been sealed behind it.
Arthur's notebook contained a sequence.
17-4-9-3.
Marcus found four rusted switches on an old electrical panel.
He used the sequence.
A mechanical sound came from the wall.
Sofia stared.
"Thirty years and it still works?"
Charles touched the concrete.
"That's not thirty-year-old concrete."
Marcus nodded.
"Someone resealed this recently."
The wall panel shifted.
Darkness beyond.
Charles turned on a flashlight.
Stairs descended.
At the bottom was a metal door.
Sofia took out the brass key.
Charles held out his hand.
"I'll do it."
She looked at him.
"No."
"Sofia."
"My mother carried this key for most of her life."
He paused.
Then let her pass.
She inserted it.
Turned.
The door opened.
Room 17.
Metal shelves.
Charred boxes.
Old filing cabinets.
A desk.
And one modern computer.
Charles immediately knew.
"Someone has been here."
The computer screen lit automatically.
A video began.
Arthur Mills appeared.
Older.
Present day.
"If Charles Vance is watching this, I'm probably dead or running."
Charles's jaw tightened.
Arthur continued.
"Anthony made me promise that if anything happened to him, I would finish what he couldn't."
Sofia whispered, "He wasn't the enemy."
Marcus looked unconvinced.
Arthur continued.
"The attack on Bellweather was not ordered by the Vance family."
Charles frowned.
"It was ordered by people who feared Gabriel Reyes's evidence."
Files appeared onscreen.
Federal agents.
City officials.
Business owners.
Arthur said, "Anthony burned Room 17 because Eleanor convinced him the witnesses would survive if the evidence disappeared."
Charles looked toward Sofia.
"But someone copied everything first."
Gabriel.
Arthur confirmed it.
"Gabriel Reyes made duplicates."
Sofia covered her mouth.
"He gave them to Maria."
A photograph appeared.
Maria with baby Sofia.
"Maria hid the evidence until she realized she was being watched. Then she gave it to the one person nobody suspected."
Image changed.
Evelyn Vale.
Marcus stepped closer.
"My mother."
"Yes," Arthur said from the recording. "Evelyn."
Another document appeared.
Bank records.
The payments Anthony made for twenty-seven years were not guilt payments.
They funded Evelyn's protection.
Charles stared.
Arthur continued.
"Evelyn died six years ago."
Marcus whispered, "Cancer."
"But before she died, she returned the evidence to Anthony."
A file directory appeared.
"Anthony spent years identifying the last surviving member of the Bellweather conspiracy."
Charles waited.
The screen displayed a name.
DENISE PORTER.
Silence.
Charles felt shock ripple through him.
Denise.
His mother's personal companion.
Fourteen years.
She lived inside the mansion.
She knew medication schedules.
Security routines.
His mother's habits.
Arthur continued.
"Denise's father was the federal prosecutor who organized the witness eliminations. She found Anthony years later and entered the Vance home to recover the evidence."
Charles immediately called the mansion.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
His blood turned cold.
"Eleanor."
Marcus called security.
No response.
Sofia pulled out her phone.
One missed call.
From Eleanor.
Three minutes earlier.
A voicemail.
She played it.
Eleanor's voice.
Quiet.
Controlled.
"Sofia, don't come back to the house."
Then Denise spoke in the background.
"Tell Charles to bring me Gabriel's files."
The message ended.
Charles was already moving.
Sofia grabbed his arm.
"Wait."
"My mother is with her."
"That's why you can't run in angry."
He looked at her.
"My mother."
"I know."
"She trusted Denise."
"I know."
Sofia reached into her pocket.
She pulled out what Eleanor had given her before they left.
A small silver locket.
Inside was a folded strip of paper.
Sofia opened it.
Charles read.
DENISE KNOWS ABOUT THE TUNNEL.
He stared at Sofia.
"What tunnel?"
Marcus turned toward the old blueprint mounted on the wall.
He wiped away dust.
A line ran from Bellweather underground.
Not toward the road.
Toward another structure that no longer existed.
Arthur's recorded voice suddenly resumed behind them.
"There is one more thing Charles must know."
They turned toward the screen.
Arthur leaned closer to the camera.
"Denise isn't after Gabriel's evidence because of her father."
Charles stopped.
"She is after it because Gabriel Reyes identified the man she has protected for thirty years."
A second name began appearing on the screen.
Before it finished loading, every light in Room 17 went black.
Sofia's phone rang.
Charles answered it.
Denise whispered:
"Bring the files home, Charles."
May you like
A pause.
Then Eleanor screamed in the background.
