Chapter 13 - The Last Missing Piece

The photograph led us to a hotel.
Mariana had stayed there the night before the accident.
The hotel records were still intact.
One visitor had signed in.
A man named Rafael Villarreal.
My father.
But he had died five years before.
I stared at the record.
Impossible.
Then I saw the signature.
It wasn't my father's.
It was someone pretending to be him.
Daniel found the security footage.
The visitor was Mauricio.
He had used my father's identity.
That meeting was where Mariana discovered the full plan.
She recorded it.
We found the recording hidden in an old hotel storage archive.
Mariana's voice was clear.
“You won't hurt my daughter.”
Mauricio answered:
“I won't have to.”
Then another voice entered.
Beatriz.
They were working together.
But Beatriz had not known the entire plan.
Mauricio intended to frame my father.
He wanted me to believe the old family conflict was responsible.
He wanted me angry.
Distracted.
Broken.
It had worked.
For three years, I had blamed myself.
I had blamed my work.
I had blamed fate.
But the truth was simpler.
Someone had deliberately destroyed my family.
And I had helped him by refusing to look.
The recording ended with Mariana saying:
“Alejandro will eventually find the truth.”
Mauricio laughed.
“He'll never open that room.”
I looked at Sofía.
“He was right for three years.”
She squeezed my hand.
“But not forever.”
The final evidence was enough.
Mauricio's case expanded.
The prosecutor reopened the accident investigation.
His accomplices were identified.
The financial fraud was exposed.
My company survived.
More importantly, Sofía survived.
I started rebuilding.
Not the business.
My life.
I stopped measuring each day by what I had lost.
One evening, Valeria stood in the kitchen.
She was humming the lullaby.
Sofía joined her.
I watched them.
Two people connected by a secret neither had understood when it began.
Then Teresa arrived.
She held an old box.
“There is one last thing.”
Inside was Mariana's wedding ring.
I stared at it.
“She gave this to me before she died.”
“Why?”
“She said you would need it when you stopped blaming yourself.”
I took it.
For the first time, I understood.
Mariana hadn't left me only clues.
She had left me a path back to life.
That night, I placed her ring beside Sofía's photograph.
Then I opened every door in the house.
Including the one I had kept locked for three years.
Sofía stood beside me.
“Can we repaint my room?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
She hugged me.
For a moment, everything felt peaceful.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from the prosecutor.
Mauricio had confessed.
But there was one detail he had revealed that no one expected.
A second vehicle had been present at the crash.
The driver had never been identified.
Attached was a photograph.
I opened it.
The license plate was visible.
May you like
I recognized it immediately.
It belonged to someone who had been standing beside me for three years.
