Chapter 5 - Behind the Wine Wall

Dante’s convoy reached the city in ninety-three minutes.
Nobody spoke during the last twenty.
Abigail stared at the frozen screenshot of her mother.
Alive.
Afraid.
But alive.
Dante had forbidden anyone from entering the estate until they understood Luca’s position.
Abigail understood the logic.
She hated every second of it.
“What does he want?” she asked.
“The ledger,” Antonio said.
Antonio had insisted on coming.
He sat across from Abigail.
Older than everyone.
Physically weaker.
Yet somehow his presence changed the vehicle.
Dante had barely spoken to him.
“Then give it to him,” Abigail said.
Antonio looked at her.
“No.”
“My mother is sitting in that kitchen.”
“And giving Luca the ledger could endanger hundreds of people.”
“I don’t care about hundreds of people right now.”
Dante looked at her.
She expected judgment.
He only nodded.
“I understand.”
Antonio did not.
“You cannot hand that information to him.”
Abigail leaned forward.
“You abandoned your son for eight years to protect secrets in a book. Forgive me if I don’t admire your priorities.”
Antonio looked away.
Dante’s expression almost softened.
Marco interrupted.
“New message.”
A video appeared.
Luca sat beside Elena.
No visible weapon.
No shouting.
That made it worse.
“Dante,” he said.
“You have one hour. Bring Antonio and the key to the western chamber. Abigail may come if she wishes. Nobody else enters.”
The video ended.
Abigail looked at Antonio.
“What key?”
Antonio touched the head of his cane.
Dante noticed.
“You carried it all this time?”
Antonio twisted the silver cap.
A narrow brass key slid free.
Dante laughed without humor.
“Of course.”
They stopped two blocks away.
Dante gave orders.
Marco objected.
“I’m going inside.”
“No.”
“You cannot walk into Luca’s trap alone.”
“I won’t be alone.”
He looked at Abigail.
“I’m coming,” she said.
Marco frowned.
“That isn’t what I meant.”
Abigail turned to Dante.
“Do not tell me to stay behind.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Good.”
They entered through the service doorway.
The house Abigail knew had changed.
No staff.
No chef.
No guards.
Only silence.
Lights remained on in the kitchen.
Luca sat beside Elena.
Matteo stood behind him.
Abigail stopped.
Her mother looked exhausted but unharmed.
“Abby.”
“Mom.”
Luca smiled.
“Touching.”
Dante walked forward.
“Let her go.”
“After.”
Antonio entered.
Luca’s smile disappeared.
“Still breathing.”
Antonio said nothing.
Matteo looked shocked.
Apparently he had not known either.
Dante noticed.
“You lied to Matteo too?”
Luca laughed.
“I lie to everyone.”
“At least you’re consistent.”
Luca pointed toward the wine wall.
“Key.”
Antonio refused to move.
Elena spoke.
“Don’t.”
Abigail looked at her.
Her mother’s eyes moved toward the sink.
Then down.
A tiny gesture.
Abigail followed it.
The copper pan.
The same pan she had scrubbed.
It sat beside the basin.
Why?
Then she remembered.
The sink had a foot pedal controlling the disposal.
But beneath the counter beside it was another switch.
She had always assumed it controlled auxiliary lighting.
Her mother knew something.
Luca stood.
“Key.”
Antonio handed the cane to Dante.
Dante removed the brass key.
They walked toward the western wall.
A wine rack covered polished stone.
Antonio pressed one bottle inward.
A panel shifted.
Behind it sat an old lock.
Dante inserted the key.
Clicked.
The entire rack opened several inches.
Cool air escaped.
Luca’s eyes brightened.
“Open it.”
Dante pulled.
A narrow room appeared.
Metal shelves.
Boxes.
Documents.
And on a central pedestal, a gray leather ledger.
Abigail stared.
Seventeen years of fear in one ordinary-looking book.
Luca stepped forward.
Antonio blocked him.
“You killed Gabriel.”
Luca smiled.
“He made a poor decision.”
Abigail’s hands clenched.
Dante glanced at her.
One look.
Stay calm.
Luca continued.
“Gabriel could have walked away.”
“He had already seen too much,” Antonio said.
“He became righteous.”
“He became inconvenient to you.”
“Same result.”
Abigail felt rage rise.
Her mother spoke softly.
“Abby.”
She looked again toward the sink.
The switch.
Abigail slowly moved sideways.
Matteo noticed.
“Where are you going?”
“Water.”
“Stay.”
Luca waved him off.
“She’s a maid, Matteo. Let her get water.”
The words almost made Abigail smile.
He did not understand her at all.
She reached the sink.
Turned on the faucet.
Her fingers moved beneath the counter.
Found the auxiliary switch.
Pressed.
Nothing happened.
Then a low metallic click sounded behind the wine wall.
Antonio’s eyes widened.
Luca turned.
“What was that?”
Elena shouted.
“Now!”
The sealed chamber door slammed.
But Luca jumped backward before it closed.
Matteo did not.
He became trapped inside with the ledger.
“Luca!”
Matteo pounded from within.
Luca spun toward Abigail.
For the first time, his calm disappeared.
Dante moved between them.
“Don’t.”
Luca stopped.
“You think you won?”
Dante stared at him.
“No.”
Sirens suddenly sounded far outside.
Luca smiled again.
“You called police?”
“No.”
Elena did.
Everyone looked at her.
She lifted her bound hands.
The rope was already loose.
Abigail nearly laughed.
Her mother stood.
“I spent seventeen years waiting for men to decide whether I was allowed to speak.”
She pulled the rope free.
“I got tired of waiting.”
Luca stared.
Elena held up a tiny emergency transmitter.
“I pressed it twenty minutes ago.”
Luca moved toward the back corridor.
Dante blocked him.
“You’re staying.”
“Who will arrest me?”
Luca smiled.
“Half the department used to belong to Antonio.”
Antonio stepped forward.
“Used to.”
The first officers entered.
Then federal investigators.
Abigail stared.
Elena looked at Antonio.
“I stopped trusting local systems years ago.”
Luca’s face finally changed.
“You gave them the codes?”
Elena smiled faintly.
“No.”
“Then they have nothing.”
“They have your voice.”
Abigail looked at her mother.
Elena nodded toward a small recorder beneath her collar.
Everything Luca had said in the kitchen.
Gabriel.
The ledger.
The debts.
Recorded.
For the first time, Luca looked truly afraid.
Then the sealed chamber alarm sounded.
Matteo shouted from inside.
Smoke began escaping beneath the panel.
Antonio turned pale.
“The archive.”
Dante rushed to the switch.
“It won’t open!”
Luca started laughing.
“Fire protocol.”
Antonio looked at him.
“What did you do?”
Luca smiled.
“If I couldn’t have the Gray Ledger…”
The smoke thickened.
May you like
“…nobody would.”
And from inside the sealed chamber, Matteo screamed that someone else was in there with him.
