Chapter 5 - What His Mother Knew

Daniel Mercer had not died because of money.
He died because he had discovered that Charles Hale planned to use Grant’s father as the permanent scapegoat.
Daniel intended to take Margaret and Evelyn away.
He never made it.
His car went off a bridge.
The police called it an accident.
Margaret never believed them.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you alive.”
Evelyn cried without making a sound.
Grant sat beside her.
He did not touch her until she reached for his hand.
Then he held on.
Vanessa watched them return to the estate that evening.
Something inside her changed.
She had spent years believing Evelyn wanted Grant’s money.
Now she understood something worse.
Evelyn had never asked him for anything.
And Grant loved her anyway.
That night, Vanessa entered Evelyn’s apartment.
“I know what you’re doing.”
Evelyn looked up.
“I’m packing.”
Grant had insisted she stay elsewhere until the threats ended.
Vanessa closed the door.
“You think he loves you.”
Evelyn continued folding clothes.
“I think Grant is confused.”
“You’re very noble.”
“No. I’m tired.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“The wedding is happening.”
“I never said it wasn’t.”
“You don’t have to.”
Evelyn finally looked at her.
“Then stop asking me to reassure you.”
Vanessa flinched.
For the first time, Evelyn saw something behind the polished cruelty.
Fear.
Vanessa had built her entire adult life around being chosen.
Her father had taught her that affection was temporary but status could be secured.
Grant represented everything Charles Hale had lost.
Marrying him would restore the Hale name.
But somewhere along the way, Vanessa had convinced herself that Grant loved her.
Perhaps he had.
Just not enough.
“You should leave,” Evelyn said.
Vanessa did.
The next morning, Grant drove Evelyn to the bank.
The silver key opened box 417.
Inside lay the missing ledger.
There was also a recording.
Daniel Mercer’s voice filled the private viewing room.
“If Margaret or Evelyn ever hears this, I failed.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel explained everything.
Charles Hale had stolen millions.
Grant’s father had signed documents without understanding their purpose.
Grace discovered the theft.
Daniel gathered proof.
Then came the final revelation.
Charles had not acted alone.
A second signature appeared throughout the ledger.
Victoria Calloway.
Grant stared at the name.
Evelyn whispered, “Your aunt.”
Victoria had lied.
Again.
Grant immediately called security.
Victoria had disappeared.
So had Vanessa.
Grant called her repeatedly.
No answer.
Evelyn’s phone vibrated.
A text from Vanessa.
I FOUND VICTORIA. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER.
A location followed.
Evelyn showed Grant.
“No.”
“She may know who killed him.”
“You’re not going.”
“Grant—”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“What if this is my only chance?”
Grant stepped closer.
“I spent half my life losing people because I thought work, money and control could protect me from caring about them. I’m not doing it again.”
Evelyn’s breath caught.
“What are you saying?”
He almost answered.
Then his phone rang.
The bank manager stood outside the room.
“Mr. Calloway, there’s a woman downstairs asking for Ms. Harper.”
“Who?”
The manager swallowed.
“She says her name is Vanessa Hale.”
Grant looked at Evelyn.
Then at the message still glowing on Evelyn’s phone.
May you like
Someone had just texted them from Vanessa’s number.
And Vanessa was downstairs.
