Chapter 3 - The Person Behind the Mirror

Alice stared at the reflection until her hands began to shake.
Thomas Reed.
The butler was standing behind the camera.
She immediately called Charles.
No answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Then she remembered Charles had said he was meeting Vanessa privately that evening.
Alice hesitated before calling Thomas.
He answered on the second ring.
“Alice?”
She said nothing.
“Are you there?”
“Did you take a picture of me this morning?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Alice sat down.
“Why?”
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
“Not over the phone.”
Her stomach tightened.
“You wrote on my badge.”
“No.”
“You photographed me.”
“Yes.”
“And somebody sent me that photograph.”
Thomas went silent.
“Who has it?” Alice demanded.
“I don't know.”
“That's not good enough.”
“I took photographs because Mr. Bennett asked me to document conditions in the house.”
Alice froze.
“Without telling us?”
“He wanted evidence.”
“Of Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
Alice stood and began pacing.
“Then why did someone send it to me?”
“I don't know.”
“Who had access?”
“Mr. Bennett. Mr. Hale. Rebecca. Me.”
“And Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
Thomas hesitated.
“No.”
Alice closed her eyes.
“I'm not coming back tomorrow.”
“I understand.”
“Tell Mr. Bennett.”
“I will.”
She ended the call.
Across town, Vanessa sat alone in her car outside a hotel.
She had driven there after leaving the mansion but had not gone inside.
Her father had frozen the supplementary credit card attached to his account.
It wasn't about the money. Vanessa had her own.
It was the message.
For the first time in her life, Charles Bennett had drawn a line.
Her phone contained dozens of missed calls.
Friends.
Her assistant.
Her father.
She ignored them all.
Then she noticed a voicemail from Maria.
Vanessa almost deleted it.
Instead, she listened.
“Miss Bennett, I know I probably shouldn't call. I just wanted to say Alice didn't ask us to say anything against you. Nobody planned today. She actually told me not to argue with you because she didn't want me to lose my job. I thought you should know.”
Vanessa replayed it.
Then again.
The second time hurt more.
She had spent the afternoon convincing herself Alice had orchestrated a humiliation.
Maria’s voice destroyed that excuse.
Vanessa remembered the maid kneeling beside the stained rug.
She remembered her own words.
Do it again until you learn.
At the time, it had felt like authority.
Now she heard cruelty.
She looked at her reflection in the rearview mirror.
For the first time, she wondered how many people had cried because of her after she left the room.
The thought made her uncomfortable.
So she did what she had always done with uncomfortable thoughts.
She blamed someone else.
Her father.
Then Alice.
Then Thomas.
But each excuse lasted less time than the one before.
At midnight, Vanessa returned to the mansion.
Thomas opened the door.
“You're back.”
“I live here.”
“Yes.”
She walked past him.
Then stopped.
“Thomas.”
“Yes?”
“Did I really slap Rachel?”
Thomas stared at her.
“You don't remember?”
Vanessa looked away.
“I remember an argument.”
“You struck her.”
“Why didn't anyone stop me?”
Thomas’s answer came quietly.
“Because we were afraid of you.”
Vanessa swallowed.
She went upstairs without another word.
The following morning, Alice woke to another message.
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING.
She called Charles again.
This time he answered.
She told him everything.
Within an hour, Charles had security reviewing the estate’s internal camera system.
By noon, they discovered something worse.
Several security recordings had been deleted.
Not just from yesterday.
From months earlier.
Charles asked Alice to come to the estate, but she refused until he promised security would meet her at the door.
When she arrived, Vanessa was sitting in the drawing room.
Alice stopped.
Vanessa stood.
Neither woman spoke.
Finally Vanessa said, “I didn't send those messages.”
Alice looked at Charles.
“He showed me.”
“Do you believe her?”
Charles answered carefully.
“I don't know yet.”
Vanessa flinched.
Her father had never said those words about her before.
Alice took out her phone.
“Someone wants me gone.”
Vanessa looked at the threatening messages.
Then the photograph.
Her expression changed.
“That mirror.”
Alice looked at her.
“What?”
“The reflection.”
“That's Thomas.”
“No. Behind Thomas.”
Alice enlarged the image.
At first she saw nothing.
Then Vanessa pointed.
A figure stood at the far edge of the mirror.
Almost hidden by the doorway.
A woman.
“Who is that?” Alice asked.
Vanessa stared.
“Rachel.”
Alice’s stomach dropped.
“The employee you slapped?”
“Yes.”
“But Thomas said she left eight months ago.”
“She did.”
Charles entered.
Vanessa showed him the image.
He stared at it.
“That can't be Rachel.”
“It is.”
Thomas was called into the room.
He confirmed it.
Rachel Kim had supposedly resigned eight months earlier.
Yet the photograph had been taken yesterday morning.
Charles ordered security to search the property.
They found no trace of her.
Then Rebecca discovered something in the employee records.
Rachel had never submitted a resignation letter.
Someone else had completed the paperwork electronically.
Using Thomas Reed’s login.
Thomas denied doing it.
Security examined the system.
His password had been used from a computer in Vanessa’s private office.
Vanessa went pale.
“I didn't do that.”
Charles stared at her.
“Who has access?”
“Me. My assistant.”
“Anyone else?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“My former assistant.”
“Name?”
“Nicole Mercer.”
Thomas looked up sharply.
Alice noticed.
“You know her?”
Thomas nodded.
“Nicole handled household complaints for Miss Bennett.”
Charles turned.
“Complaints?”
Thomas looked ashamed again.
“When employees complained about Vanessa, Nicole often intercepted them.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“I thought she was solving problems.”
“She was.”
“What does that mean?”
Thomas answered.
“She paid people to leave.”
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
“With whose money?”
“Yours.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa sank into a chair.
Alice watched her.
For the first time, she did not see a billionaire daughter.
She saw a woman realizing her money had been used to erase the consequences of her own behavior.
Charles asked security to locate Nicole.
They discovered she had entered the estate twice during the previous week using an old access code that had never been deactivated.
Suddenly the threats made sense.
Or seemed to.
Nicole had protected Vanessa’s reputation for years.
If Charles’s investigation exposed what she had done, she could face serious consequences.
But one question remained.
Where was Rachel?
That evening, Alice prepared to leave.
Vanessa approached her near the entrance.
“Alice.”
Alice stopped.
Vanessa struggled with the words.
“I shouldn't have raised my hand yesterday.”
Alice waited.
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“I was wrong.”
It was not yet a full apology.
But it was the first honest thing Alice had heard from her.
“Thank you for saying that.”
Vanessa nodded.
Alice turned toward the door.
Then someone knocked.
Thomas opened it.
A frightened woman stood outside.
Alice recognized her from the photograph.
Rachel.
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa went completely still.
Rachel stepped inside.
“I didn't come back because of Alice.”
Charles approached.
“Then why are you here?”
Rachel reached into her coat and removed a small flash drive.
“Because Nicole called me last week.”
Vanessa stared at it.
“What is that?”
Rachel looked at her.
“Everything she did for you.”
She handed it to Charles.
May you like
Then she said the words that made Vanessa grip the back of a chair.
“And everything you did that she made disappear.”
