Chapter 6 - Clara’s Hidden Past

Damian pushed Clara behind him.

The door opened.

Rosa stood inside.

“Put the gun away.”

Damian didn't.

“What are you doing here?”

“Waiting.”

“For whom?”

Rosa looked toward Clara.

“For her.”

Thomas Hayes's journal lay on the desk.

Clara rushed forward.

“How did you get this?”

“Your father gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Eleven years ago.”

Clara stared.

“Before he died?”

“Three days before.”

Rosa admitted Thomas had come to her terrified.

He believed Vittorio had discovered the investigation.

He asked Rosa to protect Clara if anything happened.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you were seventeen.”

“You let me believe his death was an accident.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Clara stepped back.

All those years.

Birthdays without him.

College graduation without him.

Every time she had blamed herself for not answering his final phone call.

Rosa had known.

Damian looked furious.

“You should have told me.”

“Your father was alive then.”

“And?”

Rosa looked at him.

“You loved him.”

Damian understood.

She hadn't trusted him to choose truth over his father.

That hurt more than he expected.

Clara opened Thomas's journal.

Pages of restoration notes.

Paint mixtures.

Canvas dimensions.

Then coded entries.

L.M.

E.M.

V.M.

R.M.

And a symbol shaped like a crown.

Rex.

Latin for king.

Damian stared.

“My father called himself that when we were children.”

Rosa nodded.

Vittorio had survived the plane crash.

The dead pilot had been his associate.

Dental records were falsified.

He disappeared before federal investigators could connect him to financial crimes.

From hiding, he continued controlling the conspiracy.

“Why come back now?” Clara asked.

“Because Damian was about to marry Vanessa.”

Eleanor had entered the conspiracy years earlier but tried to leave.

Vittorio discovered it.

She disappeared to protect Vanessa.

Then Vittorio manipulated Vanessa toward Damian, hoping marriage would give him permanent access to Moretti assets.

Vanessa hadn't understood the entire plan.

But she had willingly spied.

Clara closed the journal.

“And my father?”

Rosa's eyes filled.

“Vittorio ordered the crash.”

Damian looked away.

Clara felt something inside her break.

His father.

Damian's father had killed hers.

Damian turned toward her.

“Clara.”

“Don't.”

She stepped back.

“You didn't do it.”

“No.”

“But your family covered it.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

Clara left.

Damian didn't stop her.

For two days, she stayed with a friend in Stamford under discreet protection.

She ignored Damian's calls.

Not because she blamed him.

That would have been easier.

She ignored him because when she thought of him, she saw the expression on his face when he learned what Vittorio had done.

Shame.

Not guilt.

Shame inherited from another man's sins.

On the third night, Clara opened her father's journal again.

One page contained something she had missed.

A recipe.

Not for paint.

For pancakes.

Thomas used to make them every Sunday.

The ingredient quantities were strange.

Room 314.

Below:

C, if you ever need the truth, remember where we watched the boats.

Clara knew.

When she was eight, Thomas had taken her to an abandoned lighthouse near New Haven.

They watched cargo ships.

One had belonged to Moretti Shipping.

Clara called Damian.

He answered immediately.

“Are you safe?”

No hello.

No anger.

Just that.

“Yes.”

Silence.

“I found something.”

“I'll send Anthony.”

“I called you.”

Another pause.

“I know.”

They met at the lighthouse.

The tension between them was different now.

Clara showed him the clue.

Inside an old maintenance compartment, they found a waterproof case.

A second memory card.

Thomas had hidden it years before the first.

Damian inserted it into a secure laptop.

One video.

Thomas appeared.

Clara covered her mouth.

Her father looked directly into the camera.

“If Clara is watching this, I'm sorry.”

She began crying silently.

Damian did not touch her.

He wanted to.

Instead he stayed beside her.

Thomas explained Vittorio's scheme.

Then he said something neither expected.

“Damian Moretti is not his father.”

Damian stiffened.

“I watched that boy argue with Vittorio when he thought nobody was listening. If Damian ever learns the truth, give him the choice Lorenzo wanted him to have.”

“What choice?” Clara whispered.

Thomas lifted a document.

A trust.

Lorenzo had secretly transferred controlling shares of Moretti Shipping into a protected structure.

The beneficiary was Damian.

But only if Damian dismantled Vittorio's criminal network.

Otherwise ownership would pass to a charitable foundation.

Damian stared.

“My grandfather planned an exit.”

Thomas continued.

“Vittorio will kill to prevent this.”

Then the recording glitched.

A final frame appeared.

Vittorio.

Alive.

Standing beside another man.

Clara leaned closer.

“Who is that?”

Damian knew.

Adrian.

The video ended.

A sound came from outside.

Car tires.

Damian looked through the lighthouse window.

Three black SUVs had arrived.

Men stepped out.

Armed.

Then the lighthouse door slammed shut downstairs.

May you like

A lock clicked.

Someone had trapped them inside.
