Chapter 12 - The Recording That Destroyed a Dynasty

The old Moretti estate had been abandoned for years.
Vincent refused to bring Emma.
Emma came anyway.
“You really need to stop doing that.”
“Doing what?”
“Ignoring me.”
“I learned from you.”
Inside they found Anthony tied to a chair.
And an elderly woman.
Bianca Moretti.
Vincent’s grandmother.
Officially dead.
Very much alive.
Bianca had created the laundering structure decades earlier.
Isabella had protected it.
Lorenzo had tried too late to escape it.
Evelyn discovered it accidentally.
“You killed my mother,” Emma said.
Bianca smiled.
“I gave an instruction.”
Emma’s hands shook.
Vincent stood beside her.
Bianca offered him a choice.
Restore the old organization.
Marry someone approved by the family.
Surrender Emma’s evidence.
Or Anthony would die.
Vincent looked at his grandmother.
“No.”
Bianca smiled.
“You choose the maid?”
Vincent answered:
“I choose my daughter.”
Bianca frowned.
“She deserves a family name that still means something.”
“It will.”
Vincent looked at Emma.
“Just not what you wanted it to mean.”
Police lights appeared outside.
Bianca’s smile vanished.
Emma had been recording everything.
The tiny device was hidden inside Evelyn’s necklace.
Bianca had confessed.
The house filled with federal agents.
Anthony was rescued.
Bianca was arrested.
The old network finally collapsed.
Recordings were released.
Financial documents followed.
Mercer testified.
Celeste testified.
Anthony testified.
Isabella faced trial.
And Evelyn Brooks’s name was publicly cleared.
Emma attended the hearing when prosecutors formally acknowledged that her mother had attempted to expose serious crimes years earlier.
She carried Evelyn’s letter.
Vincent sat beside her.
When they left the courthouse, reporters surrounded them.
One asked Emma:
“Do you consider yourself the woman who destroyed the Moretti family?”
Emma stopped.
“No.”
Vincent looked at her.
Emma continued.
“The truth destroyed what deserved to be destroyed.”
Then she walked away.
That evening, Lucy practiced in the garden.
No walker.
Six steps.
Seven.
Eight.
She fell.
Laughed.
Got up.
Emma watched.
Vincent joined her.
“Eight.”
“Nine.”
“She fell before nine.”
“Her foot moved.”
“That was falling.”
“It counts.”
Emma laughed.
Vincent took her hand.
“I have something.”
“No ring?”
“No ring.”
“Good.”
He handed her an envelope.
Inside were incorporation documents.
The Evelyn Brooks Children’s Mobility Foundation.
Vincent had transferred a large legitimate property to it.
Emma stared.
“You did this?”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Lucy did.”
A purple crayon signature covered the bottom.
LUCY.
Emma laughed through tears.
Vincent kissed her forehead.
Then Marco appeared at the garden door.
Emma groaned.
“If somebody has been kidnapped, I’m retiring.”
Marco almost smiled.
“Nobody’s kidnapped.”
“Arrested?”
“No.”
“Missing?”
“No.”
Vincent frowned.
“What happened?”
Marco handed Emma a small package.
“It arrived for you.”
No return address.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
Emma recognized her mother’s handwriting.
FOR EMMA, WHEN IT’S SAFE.
Her hands trembled.
Vincent found a player.
Emma inserted the tape.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“My darling girl…”
Emma covered her mouth.
Then Evelyn said something nobody expected.
“If you’re hearing this, there is one last person you need to know about.”
May you like
Emma stared at the recorder.
And her mother spoke a name.
