Chapter 5 - The Fire Inside Eldergate

The fire began at 4:18 the next morning.

Lina woke first.

Not because of smoke.

Because Biscotti scratched at her bedroom door.

The calico cat hissed and clawed until Lina sat up.

The hallway smelled strange.

She opened the door.

Smoke rolled across the ceiling.

"Mommy?"

Lucia woke instantly.

Then the alarms began.

Damiano was already moving.

He reached the second floor as flames climbed from the west staircase.

"Everybody out!"

Staff poured from rooms.

Stefano directed them toward the eastern exit.

Damiano counted faces.

Lucia.

No Lina.

"Where is she?"

Lucia turned.

The child's bedroom was empty.

"Biscotti," Lucia whispered.

Damiano knew.

Lina had gone after the cat.

He ran back into the smoke.

"Damiano!" Stefano shouted.

He ignored him.

The fire had reached the gallery.

Heat pressed against his face.

He removed his gloves.

Both.

Dropped them.

"Lina!"

Nothing.

Then a cough.

The old nursery.

He kicked open the door.

Lina crouched beneath a window with Biscotti trapped against her chest and the teddy bear under one arm.

Damiano crossed the room.

She looked up.

"Signor Damiano."

"I'm here."

He lifted her.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

For once, there was no glove between his hand and her back.

No barrier.

No distance.

He carried her through the smoke.

A burning beam fell behind them.

Lina screamed.

"Don't look."

She buried her face against him.

They reached the eastern stairs.

Stefano pulled them through the doorway.

Outside, Lucia took Lina and sobbed against her hair.

Damiano stood barefoot on wet gravel.

He had lost one shoe somewhere inside.

Eldergate burned behind him.

A house that had survived storms, wars, funerals, and generations of Falcone secrets was being eaten from the inside.

Fire investigators found accelerant in three locations.

Not an accident.

Someone had tried to destroy the house.

And whatever evidence remained inside it.

They found the traitor before sunrise.

Mrs. Eleanor Graves.

Sixty-eight.

Housekeeper for thirty-four years.

Nobody believed it.

Not even Damiano.

Until she confessed.

Her son had owed Salvatore nearly half a million dollars.

Salvatore had promised to erase the debt if she provided information.

At first, harmless things.

Schedules.

Visitors.

Which doors remained unlocked.

Then security codes.

Then photographs.

Lina.

The wooden box.

The service corridor.

"I never meant for anyone to die," Eleanor whispered.

Damiano stared at her.

"That's what people say after they give dangerous men the keys."

She cried.

He felt nothing.

Then Lina walked into the room holding her mother's hand.

She saw Eleanor.

"Miss Ellie?"

The old woman broke.

Lina didn't understand why.

Damiano did.

Betrayal rarely arrived wearing the face of an enemy.

Sometimes it made your bed.

Sometimes it poured your coffee.

Sometimes it remembered your birthday.

Authorities took Eleanor away.

Damiano watched the car disappear.

Then Gabriel approached.

"You could rebuild."

Damiano looked at the smoking estate.

"I could."

"You going to?"

"No."

Gabriel seemed surprised.

Eldergate had been the Falcone family seat for generations.

But Damiano suddenly understood something.

A house wasn't history.

It was only where history happened.

Some history deserved to end.

Lucia approached.

"What happens now?"

Damiano looked at her daughter.

Lina had fallen asleep in Stefano's coat.

"Now I finish what my father couldn't."

He turned to Gabriel.

"The organization ends with me."

Stefano stared.

"Damiano—"

"No more inheritance."

Gabriel understood.

"You mean it."

"Completely."

The legitimate businesses would remain.

The shipping company.

The investment fund.

Properties.

Everything criminal would be dismantled.

Records would go to attorneys.

Deals would be made.

Men who wanted out would receive help leaving.

Those who wanted war would discover that Damiano Falcone had not become harmless simply because he had chosen peace.

It took six months.

Six brutal months.

There were hearings.

Investigations.

Threats.

One attempted assassination.

Damiano survived.

So did everyone he cared about.

Carlo testified against Salvatore.

He received a reduced sentence, though not freedom.

Gabriel finished medical school.

Stefano retired, then discovered retirement bored him and became head of security for one of Damiano's legitimate companies.

Lucia received something she never expected.

Ownership papers.

A house.

She marched into Damiano's temporary office and dropped them on his desk.

"No."

Damiano looked up.

"No?"

"I don't accept charity."

"It isn't charity."

"You bought me a house."

"I repaid a debt."

"My husband saved Gabriel eleven years ago. You've repaid that debt a hundred times."

Damiano leaned back.

Lucia's eyes softened.

"You don't understand, do you?"

"What?"

"You keep paying people because you don't know how to let them stay voluntarily."

That sentence struck harder than any weapon ever had.

Damiano said nothing.

Lucia picked up the papers.

"I'll accept one thing."

"What?"

"A job."

"You already have one."

"Not as your maid."

He waited.

"Run the charitable foundation."

Damiano almost smiled.

"You've never managed a foundation."

"I managed your house for seven years."

"Fair point."

"And Lina gets to visit."

"That sounds less like a condition and more like a threat."

"It is."

For the first time in months, Damiano laughed.

Then the office door opened.

Lina ran inside.

She carried the same battered teddy bear.

"Signor Damiano!"

She wrapped her arms around his leg.

Damiano looked down.

His hands were bare.

May you like

He placed one gently on her head.

And this time, he didn't reach for the gloves.
