THE MAID OF SUITE 4201 / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Night Vera Stopped Running

Dante read the photograph differently than Vera did.

She saw betrayal.

He saw staging.

"Look at the floor."

Vera forced herself to focus.

The can in Gabriel's hand was red.

But the cap was sealed.

No fuel stains.

No urgency.

Daniel stood beside him calmly.

"This may not be what it looks like," Dante said.

Vera laughed bitterly.

"When has anything been what it looks like?"

Lucy enlarged the image.

There was writing on the can.

Emergency generator.

Dante nodded.

"The Dunn house lost power regularly?"

"Yes."

"So gasoline belonged there."

Vera stared at him.

"You think Gabriel sent this to scare us?"

"No. I think someone sent it using Gabriel's phone."

That possibility struck harder.

Dante called his men.

"Find Gabriel. Now."

Federal agents were reviewing the ledger.

Names inside it reached city officials, union executives, customs inspectors, corporate officers and people who had spent twelve years building respectable public lives.

Marcus and Silas had not worked alone.

If Gabriel knew more, he was in danger.

They found his car near an old Moretti social club in Queens.

Empty.

His phone lay beneath the driver's seat.

Dante entered the building with Vera despite every protest from security.

Lucy stayed with federal agents.

The club had been closed for years.

Dust covered the tables.

Old photographs lined the walls.

Antonio Moretti smiling beside men now dead or imprisoned.

Vera looked at Dante.

"This was your father's?"

"Once."

"Why bring Gabriel here?"

"Because Marcus knew what this place meant to him."

They heard movement upstairs.

Dante raised a hand.

Vera stayed behind him.

They climbed.

A door stood open.

Gabriel sat in a chair.

His face was bruised.

Hands tied.

Alive.

Dante rushed forward.

"Gabriel."

An older man stepped from behind the doorway.

Not Marcus.

Not Silas.

Someone Vera had never seen.

He held a gun.

"Stay where you are."

Dante stopped.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"Someone your father should've killed when he had the chance."

Gabriel struggled.

"Don't listen to him."

The man struck him.

Vera flinched.

Dante's voice became dangerously soft.

"Do that again."

The man laughed.

"You Morettis always believed you owned fear."

He looked at Vera.

"Daniel's daughter."

"Who are you?"

"Raymond Pike."

The name appeared in Daniel's ledger.

Vera remembered seeing it only an hour earlier.

Former detective.

Payments.

Evidence suppression.

Fire investigation.

Her breath caught.

"You investigated our house."

"I closed the case."

"You called it electrical."

"I was paid to."

Dante stared.

"Marcus?"

"Marcus signed the checks."

"What does Gabriel have to do with it?"

Pike smiled.

"He was supposed to destroy Daniel's ledger."

Gabriel looked at Vera.

"I couldn't."

"Then why tell us you gave it to Marcus?"

"Because I did."

Silence.

Gabriel explained.

Twelve years earlier, he had been trapped between Antonio, Daniel and Marcus.

Marcus threatened Gabriel's wife.

His children.

Gabriel surrendered Daniel's original ledger.

But before doing so, he made a complete copy.

He told Daniel.

Together they created the bank backup.

"Why didn't you expose him then?" Vera demanded.

"Because Marcus killed Antonio three days later."

"So you hid."

Gabriel's eyes filled with shame.

"Yes."

Vera hated him for saying it.

Because she understood.

She had hidden too.

Raymond Pike laughed.

"Touching."

Dante asked, "What do you want?"

"The bank ledger."

"Federal agents have it."

Pike's smile disappeared.

"Then Marcus was right."

"What?"

"Loose ends have to be burned."

The words hit Vera like a physical blow.

Burned.

Her father.

Her mother.

Smoke.

She felt seventeen again.

Then something changed.

For twelve years, she had responded to danger by disappearing.

New city.

New name.

New job.

Lower eyes.

Quiet voice.

Invisible woman.

Not anymore.

She looked directly at Pike.

"You were there."

He smiled.

"Outside."

"You watched the house burn."

"I watched a problem disappear."

Dante shifted.

Pike aimed at him.

"Don't."

Vera stepped sideways.

Pike's gaze followed.

"What are you doing?"

"Making sure you look at me."

He laughed.

"Why?"

"Because Dante is moving."

Pike turned.

Too late.

Dante struck his arm.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Gabriel kicked the chair backward.

Vera grabbed the weapon after it hit the floor.

She held it with both hands.

Pike froze.

Vera pointed at him.

Her breathing shook.

Dante looked at her.

"Vera."

Pike smiled.

"You won't do it."

She wanted to.

For Daniel.

For Elise.

For twelve years of waking from dreams smelling smoke.

For Lucy's stolen childhood.

Her finger tightened.

Then Dante said quietly:

"If you do this, he gets to decide who you become."

Vera stared at Pike.

She lowered the gun.

"You're right."

Pike's smile returned.

Vera handed the weapon to Dante.

Then she looked at Pike.

"But I'm going to enjoy watching you explain twelve years of falsified evidence to federal prosecutors."

Agents entered minutes later.

Pike was arrested.

Gabriel survived.

And for the first time, the entire structure began collapsing.

The ledger was authenticated.

Bank records matched its entries.

Old phone records supported Daniel's notes.

Lucy's recording tied Marcus and Silas directly to the fire.

Pike admitted falsifying the investigation in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Three more people were arrested within forty-eight hours.

Dante's uncle was charged with conspiracy, financial crimes, obstruction and murder-related offenses.

Silas faced kidnapping, conspiracy and fraud charges.

The newspapers exploded.

MORETTI HEIR HELPS EXPOSE FAMILY CORRUPTION.

DUNN SISTERS IDENTIFIED AS SURVIVORS OF 12-YEAR-OLD FIRE.

Vera hated the photographs.

She hated cameras.

She hated strangers discussing her family.

But she no longer hid.

One evening, she returned to the Meridian Crown Hotel.

Not as an employee.

As a guest.

Her supervisor met her in the lobby.

The woman looked terrified.

Vera remembered the order sending her to Suite 4201.

"Did you know?"

The supervisor began crying.

"They threatened my son."

Vera studied her.

Old Vera might have hated her.

New Vera understood fear more than she wanted to.

"You should have told someone."

"I know."

Vera nodded.

Then walked away.

She entered the elevator.

Forty-two.

The doors opened.

Suite 4201 had been closed during the investigation.

Dante waited inside.

The overturned chair was gone.

Broken crystal gone.

The dining table had been cleared.

Only two glasses of water remained.

Vera walked in.

"This looks less threatening."

Dante smiled.

"Should I overturn a chair?"

"No."

"Break a glass?"

"Definitely not."

She walked toward the windows.

City lights stretched below.

Dante joined her.

"What happens now?" she asked.

"Trials."

"After."

"I don't know."

She looked at him.

"You always know."

"Not this."

The silence between them felt different now.

Not dangerous.

Not comfortable either.

Something in between.

Dante said, "I've spent my entire adult life cleaning up a family legacy I didn't create."

Vera smiled slightly.

"I know something about cleaning."

He looked at her.

"I walked into that one."

"You did."

He smiled.

Then became serious.

"I want to change what remains."

"Of the Moretti organization?"

"Of my life."

Vera waited.

Dante explained.

Several family businesses would be sold.

Others would be reorganized.

He intended to cooperate fully with investigators and cut ties with anything illegal that remained.

"People will think you're weak."

"They already think worse."

Vera looked toward the city.

"What about me?"

Dante answered carefully.

"What do you want?"

Nobody had asked her that in years.

Survival had always decided.

Not desire.

"I don't know."

"Then figure it out."

She looked at him.

"You make that sound easy."

"It's probably terrible."

She laughed.

Dante smiled.

And for one brief moment, the room where Vera had believed she might die became the first place in years where she imagined having a future.

Then Dante's phone vibrated.

He checked the message.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He turned the screen toward Vera.

A federal evidence technician had found an additional recording hidden among Daniel's cassette tapes.

It was dated the night of the fire.

May you like

And the label contained three words:

FOR VERA ONLY.
