Chapter 5 - The Man They Tried to Hide

I always thought fear had a sound.
I thought it sounded like screaming.
Like broken glass.
Like footsteps running away.
But I was wrong.
Real fear was silent.
It was the moment when the person beside you stopped talking because they were calculating every possible way things could go wrong.
It was the way Roman Moretti looked out the car window as the city lights passed across his face.
Silent.
Focused.
Dangerous.
I sat beside him in the back seat, watching the reflection of his eyes in the dark glass.
For the first time since I started working at the estate, I was seeing the world around him.
Not the mansion.
Not the expensive furniture.
Not the powerful guests who came through the front doors wearing perfect suits and fake smiles.
This was Roman’s real world.
A world of hidden enemies.
Secret deals.
People who disappeared when they became inconvenient.
And somehow, my brother had stepped directly into the middle of it.
The car moved through empty streets toward an abandoned warehouse district near the edge of the city.
I knew where we were before Roman said anything.
The kind of place people avoided.
The kind of place where nobody asked questions.
“Is Ben there?” I asked.
Roman didn’t look at me.
“We believe so.”
“Believe?”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“We don’t know who sent the message.”
My hands curled together.
“So you brought me here without knowing if it’s a trap?”
His eyes moved toward me.
“I brought you because you would come anyway.”
I opened my mouth.
Then stopped.
Because he was right.
If Roman had left me behind, I would have found a way to follow.
My brother needed me.
“He’s my family,” I whispered.
Roman looked forward again.
“I know.”
The answer was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
For a man like Roman Moretti, those two words carried more weight than an entire speech.
The car stopped.
Immediately, everything changed.
The driver checked his surroundings.
Two security vehicles waited behind us.
Men stepped out.
Not loud.
Not aggressive.
Professional.
Roman opened the door.
Before he stepped out, he looked back at me.
“You stay close.”
I frowned.
“I’m not a child.”
“No.”
His eyes met mine.
“You’re the reason they set this up.”
The honesty made me pause.
Not because I was offended.
Because I understood.
Someone had used my brother to reach me.
And someone had used me to reach Roman.
I followed him out.
The warehouse stood like a forgotten skeleton beneath the city lights.
Rust covered the metal doors.
Broken windows stared down from above.
The wind carried the smell of rain and old concrete.
Roman walked ahead.
Every step looked controlled.
Every movement calculated.
This was the man everyone feared.
Not because he was cruel.
Because he was prepared.
The door opened before we reached it.
A man inside stepped forward.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Roman nodded.
“Report.”
The man glanced at me.
Then hesitated.
Roman noticed.
“She’s with me.”
Those words were simple.
But they changed the atmosphere.
Nobody questioned it.
Nobody asked why.
They accepted it.
I wasn’t just the maid anymore.
At least not in their eyes.
“Your brother is inside,” the man said.
My heart jumped.
“Is he hurt?”
“No.”
I started moving.
Roman caught my arm gently.
Not forcefully.
Just enough to stop me.
“Wait.”
I looked at him.
“He’s alive.”
“But?”
Roman looked toward the warehouse entrance.
“But whoever brought him here wants something.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“We’ll find out.”
We entered together.
The inside was colder than outside.
A single hanging light illuminated the center of the room.
And there he was.
Ben.
Sitting on a wooden chair.
His hands were tied.
His face pale.
But alive.
“Ben!”
I moved forward.
This time, Roman did not stop me.
My brother looked up.
The second he saw me, his expression broke.
“Norah.”
I ran to him.
Someone immediately cut the restraints.
I dropped beside him.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded quickly.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Ben, stop saying that.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I messed everything up.”
I grabbed his hand.
“You’re here.”
That was what mattered.
For a few seconds, I forgot everything else.
The danger.
The secrets.
Roman.
Then Ben looked past me.
And his expression changed.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Norah.”
“What?”
He lowered his voice.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
His eyes moved toward Roman.
Then back to me.
“They wanted you to come.”
The room went quiet.
Roman immediately turned.
“What did you say?”
Ben swallowed.
“They knew you would come.”
Roman stepped closer.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Try again.”
Ben shook his head.
“I never saw his face clearly.”
Roman’s expression darkened.
“But you know something.”
Ben looked terrified.
“I heard them talking.”
“About what?”
Ben looked at me.
Then Roman.
“They said the maid was the key.”
The words hit like a physical blow.
I felt Roman’s attention shift toward me.
Not suspicion.
Something else.
Protection.
“What else?” Roman asked.
Ben hesitated.
“They said once you cared enough to come after me…”
His voice became smaller.
“…you would finally expose what was hidden inside your own house.”
Nobody spoke.
The meaning settled slowly.
Someone wasn’t just trying to hurt Roman.
Someone wanted him to uncover something.
Something inside his own organization.
Roman turned away.
His face became unreadable.
I knew that expression now.
It was the expression he wore when he was putting pieces together.
“Who knew you would respond?” he asked.
Ben looked confused.
“What?”
“Who knew your sister would come?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
Ben closed his eyes.
“I only told one person.”
The room became still.
Roman looked at him.
“Who?”
Ben hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Someone who said they could help.”
My heart sank.
“Who?”
Ben looked at me.
“Her name was Ambra.”
Everything stopped.
I felt like the air disappeared.
“No.”
Ben looked guilty.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Roman watched me carefully.
I knew what he was thinking.
The same thing everyone would think.
Ambra.
The woman who comforted me.
The woman who fed me.
The woman I defended.
Could she really be involved?
“No,” I said again.
Roman did not answer.
And somehow, his silence hurt more.
“You believe him?”
Roman looked at me.
“I believe facts.”
“But you’re thinking it.”
“I’m thinking everything.”
The answer was cold.
Logical.
Very Roman.
I stood.
“You can’t just accuse people.”
“I’m not accusing her.”
“It sounds like it.”
“Norah.”
His voice softened.
“Wanting someone to be innocent does not make them innocent.”
I hated those words.
Because they were true.
But I also hated the thought that Ambra could betray me.
She was one of the only people who had ever treated me like I mattered.
Roman received a message on his phone.
He read it.
His expression changed instantly.
“What happened?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The person who disabled the camera has been identified.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
Roman was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“Someone who has worked for me for seven years.”
A chill moved through me.
“Who?”
His eyes met mine.
“Marco.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
Roman’s security chief.
The man who brought him information.
The man who stood beside him.
The man who helped uncover everything.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Because the truth was becoming clearer.
The enemy was not outside the walls.
They were already inside.
Roman looked toward the exit.
“Take Ben back to the car.”
I looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
His expression turned cold.
“I’m going home.”
“To the estate?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Roman Moretti looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something close to anger.
Not because he had been betrayed.
Because someone had used innocent people to reach him.
“Because whoever is behind this knows my house better than I do.”
A pause.
“And I want to meet them before they make their next move.”
The warehouse doors opened.
Cold air rushed inside.
The storm outside had returned.
And as we walked back toward the cars, I realized something terrifying.
Roman Moretti had spent his entire life protecting his empire.
May you like
But now, the person he trusted least…
was the one person standing beside him.
