Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Inside the Family

A woman appeared on a screen, whispering:
“Dante… don’t trust the person standing beside you.”
When the video from Clara’s mother revealed the final secret, Dante discovered an old family recording hidden inside the file.
But one name was written at the end:
“Marino.”
Dante realized the betrayal was not coming from his enemies.
It was coming from his own blood.
The security room was silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Clara stood frozen in front of the screen, watching the face she had spent her entire life believing was gone forever.
Her mother.
A woman she remembered only through faded photographs and childhood memories.
A woman she had spent years missing.
The video continued.
“If you are watching this, then everything I feared has already happened.”
Her mother looked exhausted.
Afraid.
But determined.
“Someone has found the information Marco and Daniel discovered.”
Dante stared at the screen.
Every word felt heavier than the last.
“Your fathers were not criminals searching for power.”
A pause.
“They were trying to stop people who already had it.”
Clara wiped tears from her face.
“My father…”
Dante looked at her.
“He was trying to protect you.”
She shook her head.
“I spent my whole life thinking he lied to me.”
The video continued.
“Daniel believed the truth would eventually reach Clara.”
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
“But he knew that if the wrong person found her first, she would become a weapon.”
Dante’s expression changed.
“A weapon?”
Adrian stood behind them.
His voice was quiet.
“Your father discovered they were looking for something.”
Dante turned.
“What?”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“An inheritance.”
Clara frowned.
“What kind of inheritance?”
Adrian answered slowly.
“Not money.”
A pause.
“Information.”
The video continued.
“Marco and Daniel discovered a hidden network operating through legitimate businesses, charities, and political organizations.”
Clara listened carefully.
“The people involved had influence everywhere.”
The woman on the screen lowered her voice.
“They didn’t fear losing money.”
“They feared losing control.”
The screen flickered.
Then another image appeared.
A group photograph.
Several powerful men standing together.
Dante leaned closer.
Then he stopped.
Because he recognized one person.
A man standing beside his father.
A man smiling.
A man Dante had known his entire life.
His blood turned cold.
“No.”
Clara looked at him.
“Who is it?”
Dante didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because the person in the photograph was not an enemy.
Not Victor Russo.
Not a stranger.
It was someone from his own family.
Someone who had sat at his dinner table.
Someone who had held him as a child.
Rosa saw the image.
And her face changed.
“Impossible.”
Dante looked at his mother.
“You know.”
Rosa shook her head.
“No.”
But her voice betrayed her.
Dante stepped closer.
“Mom.”
She closed her eyes.
And when she opened them again, there were tears.
“I suspected.”
The room became silent.
“For years?”
Rosa looked away.
“Yes.”
Dante felt something break inside him.
“You knew someone in our family betrayed my father.”
“I knew there was a betrayal.”
Her voice trembled.
“But I never knew who.”
Dante laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“So everyone knew something.”
He looked around.
“My father knew.”
“My mother knew.”
“Adrian knew.”
His eyes moved toward Clara.
“And I was the only one who didn’t.”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
The truth was finally standing in front of them.
And it was uglier than any lie.
Dante walked away from the screen.
For years, he had built himself around control.
Every decision.
Every relationship.
Every emotion.
Controlled.
But now everything he believed about his family was falling apart.
Clara followed him into the hallway.
“Dante.”
He stopped.
But he didn’t turn around.
“I understand if you hate me.”
The words surprised him.
He looked back.
“What?”
Clara’s eyes were full of tears.
“My family brought this into your life.”
“No.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t.”
Dante stepped closer.
“Clara.”
“My mother knew your father.”
“Yes.”
“My father knew your family.”
“Yes.”
“Everyone around me was connected to you before I ever met you.”
Her voice broke.
“And I still don’t know why.”
Dante looked at her.
Then quietly said:
“Because none of this was your choice.”
Clara stared at him.
“You really believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Even after everything?”
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
And that meant more than any promise.
Because Dante Marino did not give trust easily.
Not anymore.
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Dante answered.
It was Tommy.
“Boss.”
“What happened?”
“We found the person who accessed the old records.”
Dante became alert.
“Who?”
Silence.
Then Tommy answered:
“Your uncle.”
The words stopped him.
“My uncle is dead.”
“No.”
Tommy’s voice lowered.
“He was alive.”
Dante’s face changed.
“How long?”
“We don’t know.”
“Where is he?”
“He contacted us.”
Dante tightened his grip on the phone.
“What did he say?”
Tommy hesitated.
“He wants to speak with you.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“He said he knows who killed your father.”
The call ended.
Dante stood silent.
Clara watched him.
“What happened?”
He looked at her.
“My uncle is alive.”
Her expression changed.
“And he knows the truth.”
But Dante knew something else.
In his world, people didn’t return after twenty years without a reason.
They returned because they wanted something.
Or because they were running from something.
That night, Dante met his uncle in an abandoned warehouse near the old harbor.
Only Clara and Adrian came with him.
Not because Dante needed protection.
Because he no longer trusted anyone else.
The man waiting inside looked nothing like the uncle Dante remembered.
Older.
Broken.
Afraid.
When he saw Dante, he whispered:
“You look like your father.”
Dante’s expression remained cold.
“Tell me who betrayed him.”
The man looked at Clara.
Then at Adrian.
Then back at Dante.
“You brought her.”
Dante stepped forward.
“Answer me.”
His uncle sighed.
“Your father wasn’t killed by someone who hated him.”
A pause.
“He was killed by someone who loved him.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
The man looked down.
“Your father trusted only three people.”
“Your mother.”
“Daniel Hughes.”
“And his own brother.”
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Dante understood immediately.
His uncle looked at him.
“I didn’t betray him.”
Dante’s face changed.
“Then who?”
His uncle whispered:
“The person who knew every secret.”
“The person who controlled every decision.”
“The person who everyone believed was protecting the family.”
Clara felt a chill.
“Who?”
The man looked directly at Dante.
And said the name.
A name that shattered everything.
“Rosa Marino.”
Nobody moved.
Dante stared.
“No.”
His uncle looked away.
“I’m sorry.”
The world seemed to stop.
Because the one person Dante had spent his entire life protecting…
might have been the person who destroyed everything.
May you like
And for the first time in his life…
Dante Marino did not know who to believe.
